Last year at GenCon, PFS launched year 0 and you guys needed volunteers to run, offering multiple incentive packages. This year will hopefully be even huger with year 1, PF RPG, etc. I had the pleasure of attending the PFS panel at Origins, but did not get to attend GenCon.

I know you probably haven't worked out any details yet, but I want to make sure something similar is in the works for this year's GenCon. I've requested the time off from work, and want to spend the entire weekend "working" with you guys.

Thanks,

Stratton

I've got a different question for Gen Con 2009, related to conversion to the Pathfinder rules. Since those rules come out at Gen Con, will there be enough time to convert characters (especially for a Thursday 8am time slot).

I second this request. Knowing as soon as possible that living arrangement etc would be taken care of for going whole hog in the volunteering arena would make planning for next August a huge help. Also, will you be offering something similar for Paizocon? Origins? Just the helluvit?

The Exchange 2/5

I third the request early registration for Origins ends January 11th it would be nice to confirm that PFS will be well represented at the Con

Origins is the official end of the 'year' for PFS, this points to it being well represented there

Except Josh hinted on the Atomic Array pod cast that another con in June might take it's place. One closer to home (hint)

I also would like to know if there is going to be a request for help at GenCon. If so, I am very likely to take some time off work (assuming I still have work) and go and work the games.

Would it be possible to get any type of confirmation ASAP ? We are a small group who has to decide if we go to Origins or GenCon this year, and half of us could benefit from Origin's "Expose-A-Friend" two badges for 50 bucks deal.

Thanks in advance.

Paizo will not be attending Origins this year. I might be there to run PFS events, but at this time we're still not sure.

We'll be at Gen Con in a big way and plan to run A LOT of events there.

As for character conversions, I'm debating a plan for that and will have details later.

So, to repeat the question, will you be looking for help to run for the weekend, and are you going to be offering something like last year's comp packages?

We're not quite ready to talk about volunteers yet. We have a budget meeting next week and that will put us much closer to discussing it. Yes, I'm sure we'll need volunteers. No, I'm not sure what the details are just yet. Stay tuned.

Sorry to hear about Origins. I guess that changes my plans. You really should make a formal announcement given it is contrary to what you have stated earlier and some people might miss it in this thread.

The Exchange 5/5

Rest assured that even if Paizo isn't 'officially' at Origins, there will be GMs attending that are willing to run Pathfinder Society scenarios for all comers (and not just the older stuff). We can organize through Warhorn, although the issue of location may be an obstacle as without a sponsor there will be no guarantee of table space or a room. I've never organized anything larger than a game store convention but I'm willing to try.

If I'm not there, I have people who are already willing to officially sponsor and run PFS. If I'm there, I'll be calling for volunteers and running PFS events the entire weekend. Either way, there will be PFS events at Origins.

Scarab Sages

I'm disappointed Paizo won't officially be at Origins. But glad at least that PFS will still officially be there. I'm already planning on taking the whole time off, so I can enjoy the con, and probably GM some PFS scenarios.

PFS has become a pretty big hit here--our Pickerington regular event at the Armoury has nearly filled the two available tables with people playing on a regular basis. I think we've only got 1 seat left at one table and that's it. Everyone really seems to be enjoying it. The other GM is looking at organizing an event at another location even. Pretty cool, if you ask me. :)

So,
Any update on GenCon DMing yet?
Thanks

None yet. We're almost done finalizing our schedule and we're in the process of negotiating space with Gen Con.

More than last year, please! That room was packed! :)

We're shooting for 150% of the space we had last year. And having the room packed is a good thing. :-) We're also shooting for breaking the space up into three separate rooms, each 1/2 the size of last year's room. That's our target--we'll see what Gen Con can provide for us.

Well Lets Hope I can make it to this one Josh... Loved seeing you guys at Gen Con UK... Now I am planning on flying over the ocean to see you guys in Indianapolis!!

Is it too late to join the Pathfinder Society and get in on the action at Gen Con? I came in on the late end of this and am just asking for advice.
Thanks all.

Nop... It is free to join...

Go here..

And select 'Join the Pathfinder Society and register your character' on the right side.

If you don't have a character yet you don't have to register it.

The download for the Rules/Character Creation for the society are on the same page.

But the rules will be changing shortly. And again at Gen Con. At Gen Con they will be using the New Pathfinder RPG *No word on how the change will be implemented yet*

Thanks for the help. I printed out my card and will continue from here. See what I can get into. :)

We're getting close to calling for GM volunteers for Gen Con as well as announcing the reward package for GMs who do volunteer. Stay tuned. :-)

I Volunteer!!!!!.... oh wait... you didn't ask yet?

Josh Quick question... I am planning on seeing you guys at Gen Con 2009 this year instead of Gen Con UK, Should I wait to register and book a hotel until after you GM Announcement? Because I am going to GM, I enjoyed GMing at Gen Con UK... need to do it again!.

Edit: I was just thinking about this.. I had the distinct pleasure of running the first Official Pathfinder Society game in Europe!

Great news! I'm going to GenCon largely to be there for the launch, and hopefully to help in whatever capacity I can.

I am soo looking forward to meeting all the Paizo Fans in the US at Gen Con 2009, And I am hoping we can all stay in the same hotel!

I enjoyed most of us *Including Paizo staff* staying in the same place at Gen Con UK.

Also I want to set up an after hours party. But more on that when we get closer to the con.

We will not be attending Gen Con UK this year.

I guessed that, There may not even be one...

I am asking about Gen Con 2009 in Indianapolis. I am making the long trip to that.. and asked my questions about that.. sorry for the miscommunication.

I would book your hotel as soon as you can regardless. You can always cancel the room you booked if your volunteer hours are enough for you to get a free portion of a hotel room by working for us. :-)

Note that there's a $50 fee for cancelling a room. Which still leaves you saving a bunch...

Also, for judges not qualifying for a free room, I'm looking for a roommate for my berth in the Omni, right next to the convention.

Depends on where you book. my GenCon 2009 room I can cancel up until 6pm the day of arrival with no penalties or fees... BUT what Russ says is generally true if you book under the GenCon negotiated rates.

Important safety tip(s), thanks Egon(s). :-)

I'm a little slow on the uptake this morning, but am I reading correctly that if I volunteer to GM and/or "help out" that I get free room and board at Gen Con???

Can someone who has done this in the past give me some details as to what is required? Thanks.

Most likely it will take a lot of volunteer hours, Like Josh said, they will be releasing more info soon

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

Last year, folks who ran 8 sessions (4 hours each) of PFS scenarios got a free hotel room, a weekend pass, and some swag ($5 gift certificate per session). 4 sessions got you a badge and swag, and less got you just swag. Volunteers also had to attend an orientation session on Thursday night.

It's a big commitment, but if you enjoy DMing as much or more than playing, it's a great deal.

Thanks Craig - 8 sessions is quite a bit - 32 hours to be exact - which would take up most of the time for the convention. Guess I'll be footing the bill for my trip. :)

A friend of mine already had reservations, but it's freakin' 160 bucks a night! Outrageous and highway robbery IMO! At least it's only 80 bucks a piece...but still! However, rooms are cheaper on the outskirts where you probably booked.

I have no problem staying that far out...if there is public transportation. Anybody know? Does Indy have a subway system?

More supply and demand than robbery. Also, don't forget to count parking if you're driving. That's about $20-25 a day depending on where. I don't mind paying the $160 a night though for a family of three. The time saved being across the street from the convention center, combined with the covered walkway for any rainy days is worth it. It's especially nice being able to dump stuff back at the room instead of carrying things all day long.

They have buses. I was going to take a cab from downtown to the airport on Monday morning, but then Hitch suggested that we take the bus. It was way cheaper and more on time than I was expecting.

I fully agree. Also, having immediate access to your room during the Con is well worth the higher rates of the convention center hotels. My first year (2007), I stayed at a hotel on the university campus that had rooms available right up until the time the convention was going on. They had a shuttle service and very nice rooms and only a couple miles from the center of the action.

I would have paid the higher price if they had rooms available..

Other hotels near by through other sources other the Gen Con wanted between 300-500 a night, which was way too much.

Ok.. I now have My plane tickets..

Business class from Germany to Indianapolis for 100,000 frequent flyer miles and $64 dollars... not bad..

Hey if anyone is looking for a room and does not mind staying 7 miles from the con, I can change my room to a double and split the cost of it.

Working on my plane tickets - I think I'm gonna get a decent fare. As for rooms, maybe after this year, when I meet some of my fellow gamers, we can decide to room together for 2010 and save some bucks. :)

Dragnmoon - are you going to volunteer to GM or to help out?

Ahh... Come On... All the Paizo fans in the UK can vouch for me...;-)

And yes...I am volunteering for GMing at the convention.

I GMed at Gen Con UK 2008 and had a blast!

I doubt I will have enough Volunteer hours

Anyone who volunteers for the top tier will get part of a hotel room at the Hyatt, which is right across the street from the convention center. I've already booked these rooms.

It'll probably be similar to last year's totals, except we'll be giving away more swag to all tiers. I'll have a more official announcement once I get done with the Super Secret Announcement that's going out today.
