My guess is 1137 entries. 1100 of those entries will be rejected, 32 of those entries will be Superstar 32 and 5 alternates.

Well, last year was about 850 entries, and this year there's more word of mouth, and interest based on the success of last year's contest. I know I got 2 people to enter this year that didn't last year. If everyone who did enter last year averages 1 recruit, and then some more people enter on their own after simply missing out on it last year, I'm going to guess about 2000, but in honor of the approaching new year I'll make my formal guess 2009.

Ah, but there are some--like me--who entered last year but are not entering this year. So it's not entirely cumulative. Which somehow reminds me of this here.

You also have to consider that this contest involves game design for a different game. That changes things.

I think Joel is close to right: Upwards of 2000 entries would not be surpising. However, I think the number of entries that are not auto-rejections (Word count, not a wondrous item, wrong format, etc.) will be similar to last year.

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32 aka Fatespinner

I don't expect we'll see 2000+ entries this year. I'm going to make a more reasonable estimate of 1300.

1021

I'm just going to heckle who-ever doesn't get it exactly right - Auto rejections only count as 1/2 an entry

muahahahaha

I'm going to guess 1,968 for no particular reason.

Ha! and I'll "Price is Right" bully-bid you at 1969 because I was born that year.

You are the closest without going over.

I've always expected that we won't see as many entries this year. One reason is that we're requiring people to use the Pathfinder RPG, and given that that's still in Beta, I'm sure a lot of folks aren't ready to commit to learning it yet. Second is that I think last year a lot of people thought the competition would be easier than it is, and some of them won't bother coming back.

It's hard to say how we're doing compared to last year, though, because we gave everyone twice as long this time, and also because I think a lot of people have learned that sitting on their submission for a while provides a greater opportunity to find and fix those last little issues that could make the difference in making the cut.

However, I also expect that this year's Top 32 will be even stronger than last year's.

I also expect that there won't be a big increase on number of total entries, probably somewhere around 900-1000. However, number of autorejections will be lower and a bunch of this-is-pretty-good-items will be higher, making the selection of top 32 harder...

Scarab Sages

850-ish last year. New system this year. Some drop outs, some new blood. I'd peg it around 900. I'm likely way off base...

Well, good thing I entered last year then!

For no particular reason, I'm thinking 1350 entries, even with the plausible expectation that it will be down.

Scarab Sages

I'm going to go with a well rounded "lots".

:)

Oh, and 1138 is a better number than 1137. If you don't know why, you just lost geek points.

Luckily, my google-fu is strong. Yet, I stand by my 1137 entries.

Geek points, I'd rather have a nice Paizo tag ;>

I'm thinking it will be in the 950-1050 range - in other words, up just a couple of hundred from last year.

My reasoning is thus:

  • More people know about the contest this year than last which will increase the number of potential new comers (that is, people who didn't enter last year) fairly dramatically

  • Last year proved that it's harder to do this than many people expected and that will decrease the number of potential repeat entrants (that is, individuals who entered last year but bow out this year).

  • The requirement to use Pathfinder rules rather than d20 rules will certainly lower the number of new comers AND reduce the number of repeat entrants further as that fact turns away those who might otherwise try this year but who haven't learned or don't want to learn the beta rules.

That said, I also expect the overall quality of entries will be higher, since we now have all the examples, suggestions, recommendations and critiques that weren't available last year. Thus it will be more difficult for the judges to select the top 32 but it will result in a much stronger list of items as a result.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

I'm guessing about 50% more then last year (or around 1300 entries).

Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9

I am guessing three.

Just because.

I could be wrong.

There will be 1,111 submissions. as the lord of superstardom commanded.

I agree with you.

Maybe even slightly fewer than last year for two reasons: 1. I expect way fewer auto-rejects as I expect the lower end quality to rise pretty markedly, and 2. its Pathfinder specific.

This was my guess back some time ago. I also happen to know whether I am right or wrong, but I'm not saying :)

When will the official count be posted? When the 32 are announced? Earlier?

I'm thinking 2....cuz any good gully dwarf can tell you....two is a huge number

I've peered into the endless depths of my cup of watered down hawain punch and decerned that the number is 935.

@Ragwaine - LOL!

I think the question is moot. No, not really, just fun to say.

I'll guess near-double the amount as last year anyhow. PAIZO is the new Absalom for the game formerly known as dungeons and dragons. And, to be sure, the multitudes have flocked here from elsewhere and appreciate the way end-users i.e., players, are involved in the Web 2.0-style creation/play-test process. There's no ivory tower in PAIZOLAND, and that's worth a 50% bump in Superstar involvement! Look at the number of downloads of the Alpha and Beta - everyone loves to be part of something from the ground level up!

Cheers & Happy New Year, everyone!

471 entries.

Really? That's a lot lower than other estimates. In some ways I hope you're right, as the odds go up a bit for those of us who did enter.

I am going to guess there wil be 985 entries this year. A few more than last year but the new edition is going to keep away some potential designers.

I do not think Pathfinder specific would decrease entries, if anything it eliminates one of the fears of many posters, "Is my item already in the d20 rules somewhere?"
Create an item based on a class change, reference the 'combined skills' or grant or modify 'combat feats' and it is probably unique, though not necessarily superstar.

Star Voter Season 9

752

(Anything upwards of 500 entries I'd interpret as another very positive sign for Pathfinder.)

Make that 4, I posted 3 times (or none, I'm not quite sure).

you forgot the scum that jumped ship to 4th edition. i'm guessing around the same number as last year!

Only three more hours to get your number in.

Entries past 1:50 PM pacific time will NOT be considered.

I'm going with 1,023 entries, for no other reason than 23 is just a cool number that shows up with alarming frequency.

You know, I hadnt considered that. That is an interesting idea, that edition change may impact number of submission. Hmm. Interesting.

(by the way, I dont want a 4on/3tard discussion to start from this)

I really don't think it will. I have no compunctions submitting something to RPG Superstar but playing 4E. I can't imagine I'm alone.

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

heck I play mostly second edition (and traveller) currently, and that didn't stop me. (although to be honest I still keep up with 3.5 and Pathfinder's progress, because face it, there are not a lot of jobs out there for people wanting to write previous edition material).
