[Monk Playtest]

Classes: Bard, Monk, and Rogue

I dreamed last night that monks imbued their unarmed strikes and melee weapons (while wielded) with a +1 enhancement/4 class levels, and that these attacks were always treated as lawfully-aligned. And that they got DR 1/chaotic per 2 class levels. That would emphasize their "supernatural" schtick, in ways that still improve their combat potential. I woke up, decided to post it, and realized that it was too late... the monk playtest period is over, and so the monk as a viable class is probably lost to us.

Have you had a chance to look over the spell Wraithstrike in the Complete Adventurer? Take a look at it and let me know what you think. By email if you prefer.

I like the spell, and if monks got spontaneous spellcasting instead of a ki pool, that would be a great asset to them... but they don't, and a 1/day wraithstrike item would run, what, 2*3*2000 = 12,000 gp minimum, which puts it a bit out of my price range...

I recall the late 2nd Ed. monk as described in the FR campaign was a divine caster using from the cleric list. It made things somewhat interresting.

In 3.5, I'm wondering maybe if the monk shouldn't have been made with fewer magical goodies in exchange for the warrior's superior attack advancement?

That would be 5/day use-activated. Command word 1/day would be 2*3*1800/5 = 2160gp.

And the spell is ridiculous.

That depends on the context: when combined with a 3.5-edition Power Attacking character, it quickly becomes insane. With the Pathfinder cap on PA, it's suddenly a lot more reasonable. And when given to a monk who deals maybe 1d6+2 damage on a hit, and can't hit at all without it, then I'd say it's not so outrageous at all.

Except that the Pathfinder PA nerf isn't reasonable in itself...

... as has been amply demonstrated so often, but without any use! I'm assuming the motivation in nerfing PA wan't just to curb use of wraithstrike -- that would be like cutting off your hand as a method of curing a wart on your finger -- but until I overhaul the entire game with houserules, I've got to report from the standpoint of the Beta rules (and that standpoint is that, by the time they can afford reliable wraithstrike items, melee guys sorely need them... and that a 7th level monk with a 1/day wraithstrike wouldn't be in the slightest bit unbalanced).
