Woo! let the doubting and destruction of my self-confidence begin!
that was a joke. mostly...
but yay. This year should be even more challenging given how many people will be inspired from last year's. Can't wait.
Should be interesting. I might try something, though I'm better at tweaking others ideas into new forms than creating something of my own.

Viva la competition to everyone! Last year's Superstar was a blast, and even if you think you just wanna drop something in for a lark, do it! You never know what'll catch the jaundiced eye of the judges of the fevered worship of the masses. From the clever to the creepy, the crafted traditional to the off-the-wall wackadoodle, make it cool, make it fun, and let the dice fall where they may! Remember, you can't win if you don't play, so get in the game!
Old-school grognard or new-school l33t-gamer, it's all good, as long as you got some game. So bring it on.
BTW, I understand there will be a few twists and surprises this year compared to last year with the guest judges for each round (me and the other Final Four from last time will be doing it for the round of 32!), so it'll be fun to see how it plays out. Best of luck to everyone out there!

I'm in. But does the round one twist mean contestants from last year aren't entering?
I was really looking forward to competing against and (even more) seeing their brilliance agains this year.
What about some other fan favorites? Samuel? Russ? No Russ?
Good luck to everyone..I know this will be as big a blast as it was last year.

If you made the top 8 last year, you can't enter this year. Otherwise, they can. Russ made the top 6, so he is out. However, you can see the brilliance of many of the top 8 in the products they are working on next year. Hopefully there will be a whole new cast of brilliant authors to amaze and excite you this year.

I just wanted to give Russ a special shout-out as encouragement for anybody who's not quite sure if they're up to the task. Russ got into the contest by the skin of his teeth, as the fifth out of six alternates, but once he got in there he started kicking butt and taking names all the way to the final 6. Heck, the winner, Christine, almost had to get "Golden Ticketed" in because one of the judges really disliked her item. But get in she did, and she rode that dwarven valkyrie all the way to the winner's circle!
All I'm saying is, make your item and put your hat in the ring, and if you are whatever combination of lucky and good is enough to get yourself in the door, remember at every round that EVERYBODY has got a puncher's chance to win this thing. The next Superstar could be YOU!
And that's one to grow on... :)

Good luck to everyone thinking about entering the contest this time around! It's an awesome way to get your name out there and get the industry to notice your talent. And having already had a chance to work with Jason on a pair of things so far, there's a lot of talent waiting to get noticed out there that RPG Superstar uncovers. :)

I couldn't have said it better myself!
And, in fact, I didn't!
Best of luck to all submitters - I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Hey all,
Does anyone have a link to last year's 32 wondrous item winners?
The links at this URL don't work.
http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/rpgSuperstar/rpgSupers tar2008/round1Thanks!
It looks like the links after the names aren't working, but scroll down to the messageboard posts and those links work.
For example, the Coin Belt of Beguiling!

I think I've fixed all the links at the top of the pages for last season's RPG Superstar. Please let me know if I've missed any (webmaster@paizo.com).

You should check out last year's submissions, and attendant debates about 'gonzo' material. In some cases, the judges thought an entry was in left field, and fans loved it. I myself am still waiting for the chance to play blink dog ranger-paladin with low level adjustment. : }
I think quaslity is rewarded even if you're way out of the box, and certainly some of us felt like we had good submissions, but were too like other submissions. Divination items, for example. It could be a magic pillow, an ancient book, or a lucky coin, but if it was based on the augury spell, it just wasn't the judges' cup of tea. leaves.
ahem.

Does anyone know if any of judges have a passionate hatred for steampunk. i have lots of idea, but many of them are Steampunky in nature. So obviously knowing if thats likely to get me shot down, would be cool to know ahead of time. ;)
Yeah, lately I've been in a very "steampunk-y" state of mind (must be all the Star Wars Steampunk things I've seen come up of late). At this point, I just need to narrow down which item I've come up with over the last year I'll submit!

Golarion is Pathfinder Campaign Setting, right? I thought this was for Pathfinder RPG?
Seems like putting the competition inside the Campaign Setting requires a contestant to have access to a LOT more source material than simply the RPG Beta copy and the message boards...
You MAY use the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting. You MUST use the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules.

I can tell you there's at least one judge who's an ardent supporter of all things steam...and brass. Google it. And then subscribe to Kobold Quarterly and Open Design. You should do that whether you have a winning item or not, in my opinion. ;-D

Hi again everyone!
I am thrilled and honored to be back judging this year's contest.
I have a few words of advice.
1. Take a read over last year's submissions and the discussion threads. I thought there were some real good discussions there about items and design and what is good and bad. I know Wolfgang, Eric and I really took this seriously and we did our best to provide helpful commentary. Now, Mona isnt in this year, but you can sure tell what Wolfie and I like.
2. Take your time. You dont get extra points for submitting early. Now, you dont want to miss the deadline of course. But dont rush. Write your entry. Sleep on it. Revisit it. Think about it. Edit it. We can usually tell the ones that were dashed off quick without full thought.
3. Dont worry about being reviewed. We wont post anything harsh. And if you want to be a writer in this or any field you have to be able to take evaluation. If we learned anything from last year it is that this is a great, friendly and supportive community who all want to band together to discuss RPG stuff. No one will be too uncool about your submissions. We are all friends here, and you will be treated that way even if your submission isnt accepted.
4. If you dont try, you cant win. Go ahead and submit. Do it. Try it. Take a chance.
5. Dont try to do a cheap sell to a specific judge. You wont get my vote just becuase your item is a first edition rip off. And I'm sure you wont get Wolfgang's vote just because you use something he really likes. We are professionals. We've seen that before. It doesnt really work.
As always, best of luck to everyone. And anyone who submits is really joining into an amazing process. In the end, the process will help you get better. It has helped me as a publisher and a designer, that is for sure.
So work on that submission and please enter. You will love the process.
