True, but as I understand it, Galifrains are still locked into one gender, even if they can become a myrid of individuals as a result of their regeneration. However, I'm not sure if that has actually been explored or not.

It sort of was in a charity special, 'Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death' (1999). Whether or not this counts as being 'official' (it started off with Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor) is open to question....

I think it's one of the areas that's always been a bit vague, or at least one where the shows writers/producers have changed their minds several times; that said the Romana 1 --> Romana 2 regeneration is probably the most "liberal" (for wont of a better word) end of what's possible during a regeneration (though that was initiated voluntarily).

I think it's about time for a fat, bald-headed guy in a seersucker suit to step up to the plate. What a fab Doctor that would be!
Yes, I would like a chubby timelord.
Strangely enough, I'm listening to Radio one now and lots of people are saying David Mitchell (from Peep Show). He's a little posh fat guy, pretty good actor and witty to boot!

I Don't think I would watch the show if they made the Doctor a female. Call me a purist or a sexist but I can't imagine the Doctor as anything other than male. The BBC could make him any race or change his sexual preference, I wouldn't care but I draw the line at a female Doctor.

If you listen to his dialogue at the end of The Sound of Drums...
Er, I meant to say "the dialogue at the end of Utopia," I do believe.
EDIT: And if the role is truly open to anyone, what about this? After colliding with another spacetime distortion, the Doctor reverse regenerates into Peter Davison! Then we get a 'new' Doctor without officially using up any regenerations. And an excuse to have Chistopher Eccleston and David Tennant return in future seasons.

How about making the next Doctor not British? Open the roll selection to everyone. I would love to see a French Doctor or maybe Spanish.
I'm not sure the British audience would be too thrilled about an iconic British TV character being French or Spanish. And if you really wanted to make them upset, cast an American.
Although, if the Rani ever returns, she should definitely be played by an Indian actress, given that "rani" is an Indian title.

As an American I would hate to have an American Doctor, it just wouldn't be right. Doctor Who should be kept away from any possible conection to Hollywood and an American Doctor would suggest a possible link.

Strangely enough, I agree about an American Doctor.
Then again, as much as I enjoy John Barrowman, the thought of him playing Cap (per wiki, he's interested) makes me twitch for similar reasons.
Maybe do some flashbacks with Kate O'Mara, then have the Rani regenerate into the woman from the new Robin Hood series?

How about Peter Wingfield? He's British, and he pulled off playing an ancient immortal (5,000+ years) in the Highlander TV series.
Nah, he looks too harsh. He'd make a good Master though.
The Doctor has to be British. The series is Britain's gift to the world, and it wouldn't be the same with a different nationality. I wouldn't mind an older senior Doctor either, as I really liked the cantankerous but charming First Doctor.

This is too bad, I really liked him as the Doctor, next to Tom Baker he was my fav. Although I wonder if this can really go on, I think he's out of regenerations. Wasn't it part of Doctor lore that Time Lords got 12 or 13 regenerations only? And hes what ten or eleven so the next guy is it. Not that they can't write something around that easily.
This also brings up the idea of will we ever have more then one doctor meet in the current series. We'll have three actors who could do it now. And I'm not sure which of the older actors are still with us who would be willing to do it. Still that'd be fun to see.

The next Doctor will be number 11, so two more to go after him (12 Regenerations = 13 Doctors).

There was a 5 minute "Children in Need Special" last year called Time Crash that is set right before the Christmas Special. In it, David Tennant meets Peter Davison inside the TARDIS as two timelines intersect. I enjoyed it simply because Peter Davison (and Pat Troughton) was my favourite Doctor.

Yeah, that was great. Just as Tennant said, he was "my doctor", the one I grew up with. I remember being inconsolable when he died in the Caves of Androzani as I had not yet grokked the concept of regeneration. And I hated the Doctor that came after.

Excellent. As I said in one of my post above: if they're gonna have a Black Doctor then it should be Colin Salmon. He is a brilliant actor. I am pleased with that decision if it is actually true.

All of the below quotes are taken from the Outpost Gallifrey news archive:
- February 27, 2006: A report in Saturday's The Sun says that "Doctor Who is to land in EastEnders -- and be served pints in the Queen Vic by Peggy Mitchell. The telly Timelord, played by David Tennant, will touch down his time-travelling Tardis in Albert Square in the new series of the BBC1 sci-fi hit..."
- August 5, 2006: The Sun reports that "Footballers' Wives star Zoe Lucker is being lined up to play Doctor Who's evil arch-enemy The Rani..."
- May 15, 2007: The Sun reports that Woody Allen will be appearing as Albert Einstein in the Christmas Special.
- August 29, 2007: David Bowie's website has debunked a story in The Sun that claimed Bowie would be appearing in Doctor Who as "an evil alien abductor". The Sun connects the Bowie rumor with the upcoming Agatha Christie story, which they erroneously describe as a two-part special. Bowie's website says, "... the whole story is as much news to [Bowie fans] as it is to him. David Bowie is not planning to star in Dr Who and the whole story is 'absolute tish and tosh'."
- December 29, 2007: The Sun is claiming that Kylie Minogue's sister Dannii is "tipped" for a role in Torchwood.
...and on and on. Now, they do occasionally get it right, but I chalk that up to the "even a broken clock is right twice a day" phenomenon.

Check the date. It was for last year. didn't happen. Kind of a shame really. I would've preferred it over what was put on I think.
