I think 99.9 percent of the conversation on our messageboards is good stuff. This tool will help us find the .1 percent that isn't.
I heard my Daddy saying naughty things to Mommy. Maybe I'll see if I can get my allowance raised.
CAVEAT: Many a distoptopian society has called on members to report and silence dissidents. Though Paizo wants to clean up its messageboards, let's be mature enough to withstand rude and innappropriate posts, get past them, and move forward. Those posts are but gnats. Ignore!
This tool will help us find the .1 percent that isn't.
Maybe I'm showing my age, but this is sounding pretty "McCarthy." No reflection on Paizo staff - who are responding to posters' pain- but I have to say, I love the fact that most posters on this thread are joking about reporting the "evil ones," rather than "reporting them to the authorities."
I hope Gary gets nothing but crank reports that have him rolling on the floor with laughter.

When I first read that "flagging" had been added, I wasn't sure what it meant until I read the thread. I would suggest just calling it "Report" instead of flag. Flagging I tend to associate with bookmarking, or tagging, or those little colored flags in Microsoft Outlook. Reporting a post carries more implied weight and the meaning is more clear.
Of course perhaps it wouldn't sound as cool to have an alias "The Reportinator."
Since there are multiple steps involved before you can submit the flag, maybe it's not a big deal. I know there have been websites where I wished for a confirmation before accidentally giving a negative feedback on someone but didn't get that chance.

I'd prefer if people not flag old stuff. The idea isn't to rewrite history and clean up past messes, the idea is to alert us to stuff quickly so it can be dealt with sooner rather than later when it's turned into a thread that needs to be locked.
So far I'm really, really happy with the new tool. I can tell at a glance if there's any part of our messageboards that's On Fire Right Now, whereas before I always had this sinking feeling that perhaps some thread is turning into a crapfest and I can't do anything about it because I don't know about it, and the few people motivated enough to email webmaster@paizo.com haven't seen it either. So it festers until I notice, or someone emails me, and the thread is locked. And by then, it's maybe been a few days, and there have been a LOT of people who have seen the crapfest and been turned off by it.
As for the dystopian "report your neighbors, report your parents" thing, I understand the sentiment (perhaps I'm too old as well). But I like to think of this more as a "I can call 911 about the fire next door and someone will show up" versus the previous "I sure hope someone in the fire department notices that building is on fire."
This community really surprises me sometimes, and as someone has said, when that happens, well, that's when you know you have a real community. One way you all have surprised me personally is how committed 99.9 percent of the people here are to being good neighbors (for lack of a better term).
For instance, while I was working on the Stonehenge game library, where anybody can create a ruleset for the Stonehenge board game, formatted into a nice PDF just like the rules that came with the game, I made a test game, called Chasin' Pigs. It was a very silly game, with unplayable rules like, "Chase them pigs! Catch 'em! Pull their little curly tails 'til they squeal!" I was positive that the jokesters here would create dozens of stupid, unplayable, joke games -- so positive that I argued successfully in more than one meeting that we needed to have an "Unplayable" category. Turns out we've never had a single joke game.
Some people have told me that I'm going to be spending all my time dealing with flags, but I'm betting that won't be the case. I'm betting on you, and I think I'll win that bet. Because you people are friggin' awesome, and I'm very proud to be working (albeit indirectly) for you.

Can we also have a category for spam or otherwise meaningless posts? I mean that Heathansson guy is just out of control, you know?

Just wanted to say that Vatnisse, this guy I pbp with a lot, just showed up and thought the same thing; i.e. it was for marking cool posts or something like that.

You know, I logged on here shortly after I got to work and was at first, thrilled to see a Flag option. I was about to go through every thread and post I found personally interesting and flag each one of them.
I then decided to do a general search on "FLAG" just to see if there were any notes on it so I could see exactly how it worked. Needless to say a was a little surprised when I found this thread and discovered it was not a method of bookmarking posts.
I think I'm going to flag this whole thing out of disappointment. :P

Is is inappropriate to refer to an over zealous flagger as a Flagger?
I doubt we'll ever really know who the flag happy guys are. Paizo's staff will know but for the rest of us it will be a mystery - which is sort of the point of the whole thing. This is not meant to be used as part of a popularity contest but as a tool to reduce some of the worse abuses on the board.

I'm flagging every single anti-Walking Dude post on the Stephen King Word Game thread, and you can't stop me.
I'm with Flagg...

I think Randall and crew were trying to be clever... Randall Flagg and Martin Broadcloak...Stephen King...

We'll also never post lists of top-flagged posts, top-flagged posters or people who flag the most posts.
You mean I've been spewing profanities in the 4e boards, the whole day, directed at both camps, and all for nothing?? Alas, another chance for fame forfeit. I begin to fear that it will really boil down to doing one of those disgusting "Great Deeds". I'm too lazy for that, but I wanna be famous!
And I reserve to be a racist in real life. I really am sometimes: I really hate the human race, sometimes more often than not! ;-)

I pulled my pigs tail, but the pig wouldn't squeel, it finally squeeled when i pulled the tail off, it's okay though, pig tails are like lizard tails right?
No. With a pig's tail, I would go with a barbecue saw, but for a lizard's tail, I would just brush it with oil and herbs. Bon appetit.

How about a flag that says, "[Insert Staff Member here] really needs to look at this?"
It could be kinda handy in the PfRPG forums.
Except that then Jason's email would be flooded with everyone tagging their own posts as a way of ensuring their voice is heard. The Paizo staff reads the boards, so they will most likely see anything of use to them, and if you are afraid they won't you could email them individually. But I think emailing Jason about PRPG should be off limits as there's plenty of room on the boards for this type of discussion and he's perusing them daily.

Hey, we need a system for flagging things so that evil witches and warlocks can be located quickly for burning by my master. With the energy crisis in Europe, we could do with some long-burning witches and warlocks to keep the power stations running, and I hear that (thanks to their unholy pacts with otherworldly powers) a warlock will burn like a roman candle indefinitely- and all at practially zero carbon emissions.
Uh. This isn't really on topic, though, is it?

We don't want people to post in order to get positive flags. That creates a meta system we're not interested in.
Flagging works. Several bans (both temp and permanent) as well as the death of several threads have all resulted from the flagging system. It leaves moderation in the hands of the community with Gary and I swooping in to clean up anything the community reports.

Well, I meant stuff that should be brought to your attention for good reasons, like useful ideas, not a popularity contest. It would create a meta system, eh? I guess I see the average posters here a little differently than you.
Forget I said it. It would really bomb in the PFRPG boards.
