Ride Skill: What does taking cover do?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Sovereign Court

Sorry if others can see other copies of this, the post monster got to my thread, I believe.

so my question is, what exactly does taking cover behind your mount using the ride skill do?

Does it grant +4 to AC, sort of like Total defense only you must make a successful skill check?

Does it grant total cover?

My understanding is once you take cover, you are denied attack or spellcasting action on the next round...is this correct?

Thanks!

"Cover: You can react instantly to drop down and hang
alongside your mount, using it as cover. You can’t attack or
cast spells while using your mount as cover. If you fail your
Ride check, you don’t get the cover benefit. This usage does
not take an action."

As a free action you make the ride check and then gain the benefits of cover as per the discription of cover in the combat section. Until you quit benefiting from cover you can't attack or cast spells but you still can do anything else (drink a potion, etc.).

Not a very well written discription actually. I think it should be a swift action either way (to cover or "uncover"), but that's just me.
