I'm really starting to get annoyed by this . . . I've now had another weekend that I haven't been able to access my Insider features even though I'm clearly logged on.
Its really disappointing, because I like a lot of the functionality of the sites, and I've not minded the Dragon articles, from a 4E point of view, but if I can't count on having access, even when I'm paying, on the weekend, when I'm the most likely to use it, what am I paying for.

Then ask them to pro-rate your money back for downtime.

I think you're misunderstanding some of my criticism.
I understand the argument against well-developed campaign worlds and linking the game to them. WotC was very specific in its statements in that regard. It's a decision that I regret them having to make, but I neither resent nor criticize it -- that's just one of those unpleasant business decisions.
They did not say that their products would stop including detailed NPC backstories, or detail about locations not necessarily tied to pre-planned skill challenges or tactical encounter -- not until they were forced to defend the content (or lack thereof) of Scales of War. This was a surprise to many, and criticized by 4e supporters and detractors alike.
Tatterdemalion, would "Red Hand of Doom" be a good example? It could be set in any of the popular D&D campaign worlds (and had suggestions for placing it in the Realms, or on Oerth, or in Eberron), but it had extensive notes that rounded out both the opponents and the other NPCs and setting details.

I'm having terrific problems actually trying to subscribe - I tried tonight and the site didn't seem to register my purchase, and wouldn't let me pay. Is anyone else having problems like this?
Check out the WotC D&D Insider forums - I believe they have some topics stickied for people in your situation.

So, yeah, I *did* buy a subscription. Mind you, I am open-minded enough to give things a try, and so, I did. Here's what I found out:
I'm neither reading the materials nor using the tools. In fact, I completely forgot I had the subscription until an email hit my account stating the subscription had been renewed!
So, for me at least, it's a waste of resources, and I will be cancelling my subscription and NOT looking back at all.
Personal update:
Guess what? I hadn't canceled yet.
Guess what else? I STILL haven't been to the web site. Not even to download the Character Creator (personally I don't think the game is so darned complex I even need to bother with one, but whatever.) I really DO need to rectify this - resubscription is coming up in a few days (I bought the "by the month" to see if it was worthwhile or not before sinking revenue into it.)

I've just never found the prospect of character creation all that difficult to warrant it. 4E even less so than other versions. Not only that, but I prefer the time spent writing down and statting as character creation time - who is this character, etc.
I kind of equate it to using a personal computer and Microsoft Money to balance my checkbook.

Y'know, I remember quite a lot of 4e-philes here complaining about the tone from the non-4e lovers. But when I read Scott's posts in defence of 4e I get a little irritated even though I like 4e. It might be nice if this stuff was toned down on both sides, because it really doesn't help.
As for the original subject of the post, I would love to pay but the site won't let me buy a subscription. Another fine example of WotC's command of the online medium. I can buy stuff from Amazon and lots of other places, but not from Wizards. I'll get round to contacting their support staff eventually but I can't really be bothered right now.

you know the reason it won't let you?

What the heck was wrong with my post? MerrikCale's post history indicates that he is pretty solidly in the Pathfinder RPG camp. Him coming in here and saying "I wouldn't pay for D&DI!" is like a GURPS player coming in here and saying the same thing. That's great, we know you don't even play the game and thus would have no use for its supplements. But this thread was designed to get an opinion of how many people who presumably play 4th Edition D&D are subscribing to D&DI.

No - what it says is that there is nothing in my basket when I try to check out, even though I load it up with a subscription.

Well, you don't have to rise to everything like it is a personal insult. It is actually quite hypocritical to react aggressively to everything you see that you think implies criticism of 4e, and then complain about people acting aggressively toward 4e. It also makes a rational discussion much more difficult.
MerrikCale likes Pathfinder - well, this is Paizo's site, what exactly do you expect? He won't pay for DDI - that's his choice. He doesn't need to be challenged by you as if he is not entitled to have an opinion because he doesn't like or want 4e. And we don't know why he won't pay for it, because he didn't elaborate. And you didn't ask. And I don't actually care that much - an unexplained non sequitur is not really worth getting riled about most of the time.
It isn't just you, I've seen others doing it. It isn't your job to patrol these boards rooting out criticism of 4e. And 4e is not beyond criticism, even from those who don't play it.

MerrikCale wrote:I would not pay for it...do you even play 4th Edition?
Not at this time. Though I did get the core books. The idea of 4th edition is bad, but after a lot of thinking, I do prefer 3.5/Pathfinder. I just think its a better system.
I hate what WoTC did to the Realms so that may prejudice me
Though I think even if I played 4e regularly I would not delve into DDi. I prefer hard copy stuff over reading articles on my computer

Actually, I have thousands of posts on the Wizards boards and was/is a regular on the Realms Boards. Anyone who frequents the Realms section of the Boards knows me and knows me well. Plus, I have nearly a thousand posts at candlekeep. They know I was one of the bigger anti-4th edition Realms posters.
I am a very recent inductee into Pathfinder. Its mostly a reaction to the 4th edition realms as opposed to 4ht edition generally.

With DDI now charging, is anyone actually paying for this?
Has the quality increased now the big $ is rolling in?
Just curious.
To tell you the truth, I haven't been to the website since shortly after the switch to 4e. I sort of followed my subscription to Dungeon Magazine over here to Paizo, and when it ended I moved right on into Pathfinder.
I wish WotC the best of luck, but I'm not a fan of 4e. I haven't given a single dollar to WotC since the switch, not out of spite but simply because they haven't put out anything that interests me.
Paizo, on the other hand, gets budgeted for a small portion of my monthly paycheck. Gotta keep getting my AP fix. :-)
