Liberty's Edge

P.194 under Arcane Schools:

As it reads, between 6th and 10th level there is an omission, i.e.,

8th Level: The wizard can cast any fourth level spell from his chosen school once per day.

(2nd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, and 18th level are all covered and address respectively, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spells.)

I don't think it's a typo -- a wizard gets a special ability at level 8 instead.

I noticed this right off of the bat. I suppose that it is too late, since the PFRPG has been sent to the printers, but the omission of the 8th level (4th level spell slot) kind of grates on my mind...

Actually, in Beta (we don't know if there are changes in the final PFRPG... yet), a Wizard can choose to gain a spell of a lower level than indicated; in this case, he cast it twice per day, instead of once.

Page 194:
"Whenever a wizard attains the listed level, he can choose one spell from his school to prepare every day as a bonus spell. Instead of gaining a spell of the listed level, the wizard can instead choose a spell of a lower level, which he can then prepare twice per day (except for 2nd level)."

So, a Wizard can have (at 20th):
One 1st-level spell (10 times per day)
One 1st-level spell (twice per day) instead of one 2nd-level spell (once per day)
One 2nd-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 3rd-level spell (once per day)
One 4th-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 5th-level spell (once per day)
One 5th-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 6th-level spell (once per day)
One 6th-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 7th-level spell (once per day)
One 7th-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 8th-level spell (once per day)
One 8th-level spell (or lower) (twice per day) instead of one 9th-level spell (once per day)

This, plus the fact that the power gained at 8th level effectively mimics a 4th-level spell (Dimensional Steps from Conjuration school is similar to Dimension Door, Elemental Wall from Evocation school is effectively a customizable Wall of Fire), with the advantage of being a Supernatural ability (no spell failure, no V/S/M components, no Dispel Magic, probably no AoO and Grapple failure...), it doesn't seem a problem for me.

Sorry dudes. It is not a misprint.
The wizard does not gain extra spells at 8th level, this is because the wizard is gaining an ability.
If the wizard is specialized it will come from that specialty, if not then it will come from the universal, which will be metamagic happiness and joy.
More on this on pages 194-197

Edit: And yes, the two spells of a lower level option is pretty frakin cool.
