Breakaway thread for private scenes

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Feeling comforted that the children were going to be taken care of, Ayedah promised the others she would be back as quickly as she could that day before stepping out of Zellara's house.

Taking a moment to try and get a feel for what the situation was on the streets, she then strode towards Midland district to make sure her friend's apartment was safe.

Perception?: 24 (!!! 19 + 5)

Male Human (Half Varissian/Half Shoanti) Rogue/Sorcerer 2/2

Having got the kids well taken care of, his rapier refurbished and picked up a couple more things, Zalen waits for Ayedah to return. Ready to help her either look for her friend or return the ring or both. (he does also splash on a touch of cologne ;-)

Ayedah:

The early morning streets were filled with a strange atmosphere. Every other corner she saw a city guardsmen, looking as grim as they could manage. She had had no idea there were so many of them. They must have put every man they had out on the street, but even the way to Midlund was far from uneventful. Fortunately for her, she was not embroiled in violence herself, but a few streets past her route, she could hear calls, screams and shouted threats.

She could just go forward, and would probably avoid the trouble for the moment, or she could turn right, and see what was going on.

Zalen:

I'm moving your last post from the main thread here, since it seems to be one of the "before meeting back" issues. I'd guess since an untrained hireling goes for about a silver a day, you should be good with "a place to stay + 3-5 coppers a day". So for all five, that would be around 15 silvers a week, if you are a bit stingy. Still more than they are used to getting.

All in all, Zalen had five likely candidates. Ayen, who was relishing the role of "overseer" he had assigned to her, two boys of about her age, named Roral and Kortis. One somewhat younger fellow, maybe ten years of age, named Perol and a small girl, eight years old, who claimed to want to stay with Perol. The girl probably would have found refuge in one of the temples or an orphanage, but she stayed with Perol, and absolutely refused to even hear anything of leaving him. She was called Pirisa.

Roral was by far the tallest of the small group, standing just three inches short of six feet even at his young age. He was also the leanest, with his cheekbones clearly showing, his hands bony and his adams apple poking from an uncushioned throat. He kept his unkempt blonde hair tied with a small knot, the quintessential rogue.

Kortis was much smaller, and much more muscular. Had Zalen not known such a pairing to be impossible, he would have placed some dwarven ancestry in the boy. While the boy was not fat, he was build like a bull, and even the horrible conditions in Lamm's service hadn't taken that from him. He probably would have joined the ranks of his enforcers before too long. His black eyes and stubble-cut hair completed his looks very nicely.

Perol... well, if Cheliax was missing a crown prince, then it would be him. He had a noble, aristocratic look to himself, from his sharp, narrow nose, his literally white skin, and his green eyes, which starkly contrasted his jet-black hair, he would need only a change of clothes (and maybe some lessons in etiquette) to fit right into any noble house. He was quiet, and staid with Ayen more through inaction and physical proximity than any voiced choice.

Jillian:

The halfling stirred, and fever-reddened eyes opened. "Hey, kind lady. Can you spare a silver?" He asked in a pitiful voice - and then showed a grin with remarkably well-preserved teeth. "I'm Gireo. An' i guess the trickiest rogue 'round would be you, kind lady Lammslayer?"

Ayedah:

Priestress Emilandre watched over Ayedah as she handed down her penace as described in the main threat and waited for a moment. "Is there anything else you wish to speak about, Ayedah? I feel... as if you have many things on your mind". The elder priestress, often considered a confidant of the bishop, watched Ayedah up and down.

Female Lethori Halfling Rogue/2

"You can call me Jillian, and yes, here's 9 silver (I don't like small change). Now, lets get you equiped." Shopping spree! Jillian will pay for everything the boy needs to be a decent rogue.

How should I deal with this? Can I make him an alias to help control him? What levels should I give him, etc...

Male Human (Half Varissian/Half Shoanti) Rogue/Sorcerer 2/2

Zalen and the kids

Spoiler:
All in all, Zalen is feeling happier than he has for a long long time. With the death of Lamm it feels as if a huge weight is off his shoulders. He imagines he can feel his father's spirit over him, pleased that his son had a direct hand in preventing such a foul man from harming any others. And now, with his father's sword returned to it's former glory and more coin in his purse he is feeling confidant and alive. And finally, the icing on the cake, after being an only child and being alone for so long, it now seems he has been blessed with a little family around him!

He has little to no experience with children though so is a bit overwhelmed and nervous though he makes pains to not show this to the kids at all, always putting a brave, confidant and happy face on things, thinking they are in need of such treatment after their abuse at Lamm's hands. He doesn't set down any rules for them at present other than the ones stated figuring they must be pretty good at taking care of themselves already. Although he does make it clear to the older ones that he does not want the too youngest out of the house after dark. He also gives them a brief idea of some of the going's on in the city at present and Strongly suggests that, for the moment at least, they All stay indoors except when absolutely necessary to get food or other supplies. He also forbids any of them to leave the house alone during this time of trouble, emphasizing again the idea that they should now consider themselves a Family and look out for each other.

Finally he lets them know that they shall each be getting 5sp a week 'salary' or 'allowance' staring with the 5sp each he already gave them. Ayen shall get double (but the rest will not know that) So a total of 30sp or 3gp a week (They better be Worth it! ;-)

He will also encourage them come up with their own ideas on how to Honestly bring in some money of their own to the family. Whether by selling back/cooked goods, arts & crafts they prepare, putting on little talent shows or even a ‘lemonade stand’. Anything to keep them busy and positive…and of course always keeping their eyes and ears open to report back to Me. =D I also, taking in the strength of Kortis, the older appearance of Roral and the smarts of Ayen, let them know I may have specific assignments for them from time to time. He’s not quite sure what to do with or make of Pirisa at the moment, cute little thing she is though. And leaves her to the others to mainly take care of until he gets more used to the idea of caring for such a young child. Perol, with his white skin, dark curls, green eyes and dashing looks gives Zalen a bit of a fright for a moment and he thinks ‘No! It Couldn’t be!’ but then he does some quick mental math and is relieved…mostly…he Was a rather precocious child in his youth…But no no, Impossible! Anyway, he does catch himself giving the child an odd sideways look every now and then…: )

Other than that, he’s waiting for Ayedah to get back, unless she already has before him,

If Jillian wants, as the kids all already know each other, her little protege can join Zalen's 'gang' but She will be responsible for the halfling tot and his welfare. And ah, Level's? Not that it's any of my business really, but he May be a little young for her to think of starting to actually bring him along on adventures and whatnot...IMHO only of course.

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Ayedah stopped in her tracks when she heard the shouting. She frowned, having wanted to avoid any trouble on her way to Danel's apartment, but when she heard the screaming she knew she could not just walk past.

She looked around her to see if any guards were around and moving to investigate the disturbance. Then she cautiously took a right turn to see for herself what was happening and if anyone needed help, running as fast as she could.

Life has certainly become eventful lately, she thought to herself.

Jillian:

The younger halfling showed a lopsided smile, and moved with his new mentor through the city. Two "Slips" had little problems finding their way even in the tense atmosphere that gripped the city.

Ayedah:

She quickly crossed a few streets and saw the disturbance up front. A group of eight workers, masons or other builders were in a shouting match with a group of one female and a male city guard. The woman had her blade out, and two of the masons were wielding bricks as if they were crude missiles. "How can you defend the whore queen?!" a young woman among the construction crew screamed. "You're like us, you can't have lost your hearts like this!"

The male guardsmen snorted "Get your asses back to work! I am not asking you again. This disturbance is over." He waved the sword like a glorified stick... then it happened. A brick hit him square in the head. He dropped like a felled tree.

Zalen:

Ayen seemed extremely excited about the prospects, and promised to earn back the money he gave her before the week was even half past. That and put the house back in order, and learn a proper job on the side. The boys snickered, and generally didn't take her too seriously. Perol even winked at Zalen, and whispered "Ayen's bossy, but she's smart, too."

Coming upon the scene, Ayedah was suddenly unsure whether she wanted to get involved. On the one hand, there were armed guards threatening people who didn't seemed to be warriors of any kind. On the other, it was eight against two, and it looked like it could get ugly quick. She knew these people were upset about the new queen, but she knew too little about her and the ways of Korvosa's people to take any side on that matter. It just seemed sad and frustrating to her that these people were so quick to turn on each other.

When the guard collapsed after being struck though, she tried to dash in between the two groups, unsure of what she could do to prevent any bloodshed on either side. It was her irritation that came to lead her words as she put her back to the female guard and faced the masons, pointing at them and yelling angrily, "What is wrong with you people?! All of this is going on in the streets and you are here picking fights with guards?" Suddenly realizing the situation she had placed herself in and that she had not really thought out what she was going to say or do to defuse the situation, she tried to change tactics. "What about your families?! Do you not have anything more important to you right now than trying to get yourselves killed or trying to kill someone else?"

She wanted to check on the fallen guard, but she did not dare move from between his partner and the unruly townspeople.

Male Half-Orc Cleric of Gorum, 2nd

Shortly after dawn, Krek had finished sizing up the youths and selected a few to take to the Pantheon, hoping they would take the kids in as they did himself.

He asked the children if they had ever been there before. For those who hadn't, he described what it was like in brief; the change of environment had been a shock to him, and he didn't want the youths to feel out-of-sorts, at least not more than was necessary.

Assuming no issues along the way.

The fresh air did him and the kids good, he felt, as they approached the Pantheon. Large as the structure was, he knew it well enough now, but he could sense the mild anxiety from his group. With little trouble, he found a priest, and asked him to watch the group - carefully - while he found his rescuer.

Diplomacy = 18 + 2 = 20

Hopefully, the man could find it in his heart to repeat the favor. If not, Krek had no idea what to do with the kids.

Feel free to make up this rescuer's background; I didn't think overly much about it when writing my story.

Male Human (Half Varissian/Half Shoanti) Rogue/Sorcerer 2/2

Zalen joins in the mirth for a moment even returning the boys wink. But then turns more serious again and says "That's my girl Ayen! Good for you. Now all right the rest of you scragamuffins. All fun and play aside, I do want to make sure that you all understand that Ayen has my Full trust and support. So until the rest of you prove yourselves to me I don't want to hear about any of you giving her any guff. Now I have some more business to attend to so I'll shortly be leaving you all here to take care of yourselves. I expect the place to be in tip-top shape when I return and you all to be well employed respectable citizens by the time I get back"...then he winks and smiles "Ok, I guess we can give a little more time for that last one, eh?"

Then he'll be off with Ayedah or to complete the rest of his business.

Just wanted to say, I'm quite liking this 'Breakaway' idea GM and All. It allows for some more RPing and storytelling without (I'm Guessing?? Ayedah? ahem. lol) the need for combat and without getting in the way (again??) of the main story. That's all. :)

Female Human Cleric 4

I guess I will join in the fun :)

Alandra trooped down the Streets of Korvosa followed by a bunch of bustling children. Being herself only a fews years older than the oldest of them, she identified, knowing exactly what it was like to escape Lamm's clutches. They arrived at the gates to Gray; Alandra recognised the guards.

"Billy, you have to let us in. I rescued these orphans from the same crime boss who had me. I need to speak to Mother Maple about finding a place for them."

Ayedah:

The sudden appearance of the Shoanti gave the angry workers pause, and indeed, no further bricks or other projectiles flew for a moment. The guardswoman needed no second indication to check how her compatriot fared. One of the more vocal workers focused her. "The b$&$! wants to hold us all hostage in our own houses! Tells us we have to stop working way before sundown! At this rate, we'll be nowhere near done!"

Still, the sass and fight was out of the construction crew now that the consequences of their violence were all too visible. The woman whispered to Ayedah, from behind "He needs a healer, fast. I can't feel him breathing. Hold them back. If i call in reinforcements now, they all die... I'll get him somewhere." She was trying hard not to panic, Ayedah realized. First time a city guard really paid her any kind of respect.

Alandra:

Billy eyed her. "Yeah, come in, all of you. Prepare yourself for a storm. She's not going to let you off easy if you walk off like this".

The bravest children tried not to seem intimidated, but some could not help but shiver or avoid looking at the decorations of the boneyard, the small depiction of the God of the End Times, and the atmosphere of finality even in these frontal chambers.

Mother Maple's steps approached. "Alandra, i see you are back from yo..." She eyed the orphans stringing behind the young priestess. "Explain" Was there a smile playing on her face already?

Krek:

Krek reached the Pantheon without a major incident. The pot was putting on steam rapidly, but did not overflow yet. He had selected the toughest of the bunch, the boys who probably soon would have found their way into Lamm's thugs.

The old, sinewy dwarf who had set him on his current path was not too hard to find. He was slowly sharpening a dagger's blade, sitting on a small wooden chair. "Krek... so good to see you alife. These are not yours, are they?"

He delivered the joke in the same mirthless voice, so dry it wasn't clear it really was a joke. "So, the Lord in Iron blesses you still?"

The rest of you will receive a post ASAP - going to bed now. Should have 2 hours ago

"I'm sorry Mother, its a long story." Alandra paused then went on. "Yesterday, when I was preparing the biers, I found a note. Or, really a card. A Harrow card, with a note on the back. The note was from a lady, actually a ghost, and it said if I went to her house I would find other people who were hurt by Gaedren Lamm, like me. So I went."

Again she paused. Then when Maple didn't say anything continued. "I went to the lady's house, Zellara, and she told us where we could find Lamm. We didn't know she was a ghost then, she just looked like a normal lady."

Alanda talked very fast now, as she is like to do when she is nervous or excited. "So we went to the old fishery where Lamm was and we found him. He had all these poor children there. And Zellara's head in a hat box - that's when we found out she was a ghost. Then we heard the criers saying the King was dead, and we couldn't leave. I didn't want to get caught by the Guard for disobeying the curfew, you know. So when it was safe to leave, we brought the children back to Zellara's house. It was after dawn by that time. None of them had anywhere to go. So those that wanted to I brought here, you know, to see if the Temple could help find a place for them."

"I am very sorry for abandoning my post Mother."

"Oh, and we found the queen's brooch, you know the one she lost. That she has a big reward for. I want to go back to the house and meet back up with my friends to return it. Can I go?"

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Great post Alandra. I could picture the nervous young Shoanti Cleric Perfectly! ;-)

Jillian:

They young man seemed rather eager to get himself clean and to receive a bit of equipment. Shopping was relatively uneventful... until it came to the matter of a dagger. More precisely, one displayed in one of the stores they visited. A beautiful piece, to be sure.

"Miss Jillian... don't i need something to fight with?" He asked, and tried very hard to sound pleasant. That probably would work rather well with tall folk, for whom the distinction between child, men and halfling was less easy.

Zalen:

Unless you have something in mind that could happen in the city, i would close here. I've got a few ideas about his ersatz-family, but none of them takes place in the first 15 minutes ;)

Alandra:

The elder looked her straight in the eyes, visibly forcing herself into a calm, relaxed attitude. "I want this to be absolutely clear, then. Is the following what you claim to have abandoned your duty for? You claim to have received a prophecy, which you made true. You also claim to have aided a restless spirit. You defeated the man who tormented you for year, and freed those currently in his clutches."

She had a gaze that seemed set in stone. Just like when some desperate husband begged the church to call his wife back into life, or his child. Not looking at her proper anymore, but to some point behind her, as if she was not even truly there.

The children were beginning to grow restless. The two priests, together with the somber surroundings were probably a bit frightening to them.

Female Lethori Halfling Rogue/2

"Hmm... I was going to let you defend yourself with your scrawny little fists, but now that I think about it... sure, let's get you a dagger." After the day of shopping is over (finally) Jillian cannot help feeling a bit lighter. Catching up with the rest of the group, she tells Gireo to stay close, and ever vigilant. I assume I can head back to the main thread?)

Alandra looked down at the ground. "Yes, Mother." Then she looked up at her superior, anxiously awaiting punishment.

Um, just to be clear in case I misunderstood Jillian, if she is planning on bringing an untrained child along with us on our adventures there's no way Zalen will put up with that...unless she can come up with a real good reason for it...just saying.

And GM, no that's perfect. Zalen's done for now and just waiting for the rest of the group to gather to go return the broach...

The guard's words confirmed what Ayedah feared, that the guard was gravely hurt and that things could devolve into a slaughter. Trying to keep her glare fixed on the masons as much as possible, she whispered back, "Go, get him to safety. I'll handle this." She tried to sound assured for the guard's sake, but she wasn't sure what she could do. The spirit had gone out of the protesters at least.

As she tried to keep herself between the retreating guards and the unruly citizen, she spoke to them again, trying to soften her voice to something still forceful but less aggressive. "So you're willing to kill a man to get your work done? You want blood on your hands? Is it still worth it then?" The guard's respect had reminded her that she had fallen into the trap of thinking too harshly of them as a whole. "Do you think they really wanted to be here, having to threaten you?"

She tried to adopt the least threatening stance she could, letting her hammer hang loose and unready in her hand and pleaded, "You should go. I'm not going to tell you to go home, but you should not stay here. More guards might come, and they will be upset about what happened to their own. It will only get worse if this continues. Whatever you were working on isn't worth people dying over. Please." She looked in their eyes, praying that what she said was enough to reach them.

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Some great 'diplomacy' there Ayedah! If Zalen was there he'd be impressed ;-)

Alandra:

Mother Maple left her hanging for what seemed like an eternity. "Alandra, i find little fault with your actions safe one: Why did you not ask permission? Why have you left behind your duty when all it would have taken was to ask me?"

The priestess gently placed one of her hands on Alandra's shoulder. "You show great promise, Alandra. I would loathe to see it go to waste. This is why i have to punish you. Do not consider this a harmless slap on the wrist, because that would rob it of its meaning." She drew out the words. With one finger she smoothly raised her protegee's face to face her own. "You will spend four hours of each day in study from now onward, and i will test you. As in life, the test of your diligence will come when you least expect it. If you fail me, I will need to become more severe with you. If you are good... then I will have to reward you."

With a short look over the assemblage of children and adolescents, she added "We'll find good homes for them. For the moment, will you arrange for them to stay in the guest quarters?"

Ayedah:

The female guardsmen pulled her comrade from the endangered area. She began to shake ever more severely as the very real possibility of her friend dying before help arrived began to sink in. To her credit, it seemed to only serve to make her more efficient.

The mob was visibly no longer as keen on blood now that this strange Shoanti, who very clearly did not belong to the despised new ruler's cronies was speaking out. Some muttered insults about Ayedah's heritage could be made out, but nothing as overt as to reignite the flames of rampage. One of the Masons, a burly man of maybe forty summers cleared his throat. He looked as if he would fit right into a Shoanti tribe. Rough trousers, a sleeveless vest, arms like logs. He probably could stand his own against most men of Ayedah's home tribe. "Do you think we want that? They're our sons, our neighbors and our friends. Why do they prop up that pretender! She's a lying wastrel and has no claim on the crimson throne. I'd not be surprised if she murdered the king."

A general murmor of support swelled from the other workers - but the violent moment was gone, now that the visible agents authority were no longer present. "I'm just pissed off she hides behind our friends. She and me, a fair fight - two heartbeats." While there was little doubt the man could probably break every bone in the Queen's body in that time, the announcement caused nothing but general mirth. Sure, Illeosa was likely to wrestle for the crown.

And with that little bit of treason, it was over. Two of the workers more in the back (probably including the one who had thrown the stone) were sneaking into a side alley, quickly followed by most of the others. Only the huge man remained after a few mo ments. "Bren's the name. I... well. I just wanted to say that's been mighty courageous of you. I guess you Shoanti know a thing or two about that. Courage, i mean."

Female Human Cleric 4

"Thank you Mother." Alandra replied and kneeled. "May Pharasma's grace be with you." She rose and turned to the children behind her.

"Come on kids, follow me. Let's see if we can get you set with a place to stay for now." Alandra led them out of the temple and down the path to the guests quarters.

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Ayedah could not help but let out a sigh of relief as the workers began to disperse, though the racist barbs from some of them left her frowning, as did their complaints about the queen. She knew nothing about her save what others had told her, and they all held strong opinions one way or the other.

GM TerraNova wrote:

"My people have a history with overwhelming odds." she replied humorlessly before she caught herself. Damn, she thought. I shouldn't let them get to me. "I'm sorry. Thank you." she added, bowing her head a bit. "I hope everything turns out alright for your city." She found herself looking back, trying to spot the retreating guard. "I have to go, Bren. She's going to need help getting her friend to a healer." She was already backpedalling and strapping her earthbreaker to her back as she said it, nodding a farewell to him and turning to chase after the guards.

If she hasn't lost track of them:

Ayedah did not slow until she was nearly on top of them. "Hey," she called out. "Let me carry him. I can get him to help faster if you just tell me where to go."

She could not simply continue on her way, knowing that she had left when there was more she could have done.

Ayedah will offer to carry him all the way to safety if his partner agrees.

Male Half-Orc Cleric of Gorum, 2nd

Krek's response was a toothy grin.

"They might be - you know I don't keep track."

In good spirits for the first time in a few days, he turns, giving a wave of an arm towards the youths.

"I am yet blessed, but they need none of my combat boons. I was hoping you wouldn't mind aiding them - you did well with me."

Alandra: This concludes the scene for me, unless you have something specific in mind

Krek: The old dwarf looked over the bunch, and made a face. "A regular bunch of kids, alright. So, let me guess. You finally made him pay, didn't you. And to the victor go the children." He scratched himself unashamedly. "We can't keep them all here, you know that. Best i can promise is I'll talk to people, keep them in the dry for some days... see if they can't learn some craft or such."

Ayedah:

The female guardsmen stood by a corner, holding back tears. Her whole face was crying, but her cheeks remained dry. "That... won't be needed anymore. I... was too slow. Careless, too."

She did not turn around, did not move... just looked at the form of her comrade, whom she had gently sat down in a house entrance. He wasn't moving. Not an inch. Not a breath. Nothing. "They killed him... oh all gods. Abadar... they killed him."

I'm good.

Ayedah's heart sank when the guard told her what she dreaded would happen, even as she looked and hoped to see that the guard was wrong.

For what it's worth, Heal : 16 (15+1 WIS)

"I..." She truly didn't know what to say. "I'm sorry. If I had gotten there sooner I..." she halted. What would have happened differently? They probably only stopped because they saw what it would come to. What difference did I really make back there. Her fists shook to her sides. Damn it! For someone to die over something so pointless!

She hesitatingly put a hand on the guard's shoulder, hoping it would be taken as comforting and that she wouldn't recoil at the touch of a "savage" as so many here seemed to think of her people. "You did all you could. I saw that much. Let me help you take him back to your people." She tried to keep her voice calm, tried to forget her anger even as she attempted to burn the face of the man who likely killed the guardsman into her memory. She couldn't let that one go. "If you lead the way, I'll...I'll carry him for you."

She remembered the apartment she had been in such a rush to check on. I'm sorry Danel, it will have to wait for now.

Ayedah:

Ayedah checked the man... and there was not much else to be said. Heartbeat, gone. His skull shattered above his eye. She wasn't too keen on investigating further. There wasn't much too learn, after all.

The guardswoman did not flinch when touched. Neither did she say anything. She just... stood there for a moment. "I'll do it myself. He was my partner in this patrol. You... just happened along." She tried picking him up, put one of his arms around her shoulders, struggling. "I... i can't do this. I can't do this." Her face was growing pale. Ayedah had only seen this once. One of the young woman in the tribe, when she had seen her sweetheart impaled. She was about to faint.

Male Half-Orc Cleric of Gorum, 2nd

Krek was pleased the issue of the children were taken care of. He wasn't a father (at least knowingly!) for a reason. The scratch didn't escape his eyes, and he mimicked the move; not having many people he could call friends made Krek try to fit in best he could with those who'd put up with him. Another problem tugged at his mind though. He lowered his voice.

"What's this talk about the king dead and whatnot? After Lamm met his end, the path back to central town was patrolled by guards and proclaimers of his death. They don't like the look of me anyway, and even the normal people seem upset."

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

It tore at Ayedah's heart to see the woman struggle with the body of her comrade. She was about to help lift the man, to share the burden with her at least, when the guard spoke.

"I... i can't do this. I can't do this." Her face was growing pale. Ayedah had only seen this once. One of the young woman in the tribe, when she had seen her sweetheart impaled. She was about to faint.

Oh no, she thought as she rushed forward to catch the guard. She remembered the tribeswoman that had lost her love, and the possibility that the guard's similar reaction implied in Ayedah's mind made the situation even worse.

If the guard is still conscious:

Spoiler:
Ayedah tried to get the woman back on her feet, but did not rush her. She could not think of anything to comfort her. What could? Instead she knelt and gently lifted the man's body onto her right shoulder. She would have prefered to carry him with more dignity, and not just for his partner's sake, but she needed her other arm free, which she placed under the guardswoman's right, saying, "Here, lean on me. Just tell me where to go."

If the guard is unconscious:

Spoiler:
Ayedah held the guardswoman in her arms, her partner dead on the street. She looked down at the man's body, frowning. She had to get the woman to safety, but she could not simply leave him out here. She didn't know him but she knew he deserved better than that. But she didn't think she could carry both of them and their armor.

She scanned the streets for a horse, or anyone else that could help. By her ancestors if there was anyone out here they would help.

Krek:

With a short motion of his head, his old friend pointed towards one of the buildings. Krek knew it was where he kept his belongings, his bed, and most importantly his brandy. "More to tell than a dry throat'll muster. I've got a few new brews from these Cailen Cayden priests who came through. What do you say?"

Sense Motive DC 12:

Spoiler:
While a brew or two was certainly something neither of them was averse to, the hesitation, the subtle notion, and his old friends uncharacteristic delay in acting made one thing clear: Being alone with Krek was more important to him than any brew could ever be.

Ayedah:

The young woman (she could not be much older than Ayedah) grasped the wall, but kept upright. "We've come from Longacre Building... but there's a smaller guardpost down two lanes. We... should go there. No need to call in the others. Its too late."

She leaned on her alright, as if the strength to even walk had left her. "I... I always thought he was just about to ask me to go out with him. But he never did. And now... now they're going to die. And if... oh gods... HE is dead. They are going to die for it. And... and then? Then... then their brothers will talk of revenge... 'But my brother didn't throw the stone. Why was he hung along?"

Her rambling became more coherent as the street slowly wound on. Ayedah was able to learn that the two were really only dispatched to see if anyone was trying to raise trouble, make sure to show "presence" and ask people to go home as the curtfew approached. She was called Maris, and the other guard had been called Feiko.

A small guardpost, really a converted storefront, came into view... and a much older city guard, a man with a disgustingly large mustache. He was probably some kind of officer, since he loudly argued with a fully-armored Hell Knight.

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Ayedah's spirits continued to sink as Maris rambled on. To lose someone close to you so suddenly, and for nothing... And her talk about what was going to happen troubled Ayedah. She wasn't sure if Maris simply stating that she thought Feiko's killer would be put down or that she desired for it to happen. How can I blame her for that?, Ayedah thought. Was I any different when Danel died? But her talk of the others being killed, and what would come after, unsettled her. She couldn't be sure, the woman was so distraut it was hard to tell, but she felt as if that was something the guard feared.

GM TerraNova wrote:

Spirits and gods... She had heard of the Hellknights and had not liked any of it. As bad as things could get with angry guards seeking revenge, how much worse would it be with those devil-loving brutes?

Ayedah hoped anger and hate had not taken too much hold in the guardswoman as she slowed her pace, still quite some distance from the guardpost. "Maris," she spoke softly. "You don't want to see that happen, right? You don't want to see these killings continue? Tell them that one man alone threw that brick. That's true enough, isn't it? I can find him for you. I can bring him in, so no one else has to get dragged into this." She looked at her sympathetically, "I lost someone dear to me just days ago. I know how it feels to have everything you're feeling turn into hate, but if you it only gets worse if you give in to that."

She realized how little satisfaction Lamm's death had given her.

Whatever the guard's response is, when they get to the guardpost:

As they came closer to the guardpost, she called out to the mustached officer. She was determined to ignore the Hellknight as best as she could. And the fact that the guard was arguing with him automatically raised the mustached man's standing in her eyes. "Hey! She needs help." She stopped herself before mentioning the dead, for Maris' sake.

"Back me on this..." Maris whispered, as she stepped forward, and saluted. It looked just as she did - plainly out of anything resembling an ordered state of mind. "Guardwo..." Then she was cut off by her commander. "Get a cleric! Healer's kit, too. MOVE!" He called to someone in the guard building.

Maris had hardly begun to gently let the body of her fallen friend slide towards the street, when the viselike gauntlet of the Hellknight closed around her face, and twisted it towards the visor of his imposing armor. "What has happened?" He demanded. Of course the armor obscured any vision of his face, but the voice was harsh, deep and devoid of mercy. The officer must have been either brave or convinced to stand up to him.

Maris sobbed, but a shake prompted her to speak. "We were down in Silverfiddle lane. Patrolling. One of Bren's workers shouted insults to Ill... Her Royal Majesty. Feiko... he went to catch him, but... he threw a stone, and..."

With a casual twist, the Hellknight send the woman flying back to the cobblestone street. "She's lying. Do i need to remind you about the proper punishment for knowingly reporting lies?" He asked casually.

The officer stepped up. "Listen, Veriques. This woman is shocked, she's just seen a friend be hurt. Maybe even die. I know your kind cuts out their own hears, but we don't. Now let us handle that. We'll make sure we find everyone who had a hand in this. And exact proper punishment."

The guardsmen with the healers kit just shook his head when he reached the corpse. Mumbled something in a defeated voice.

Cailen Cayden. The deity's followers were less annoying than most in the Pantheon, and they didn't seem to cold shoulder Krek into a corner. How trustworthy their brews were, however, wasn't clear to him; in fact, he'd rather rely on something from one of the Abadarites in the temple - bothersome, but certain. Krek knew better than to doubt a Dwarf's taste in drinks though.

As far as certainty went, however, Krek was sure there was something amiss with his rescuer, given his body language. If it was serious, he didn't want the youths around for it. Turning around, Krek returned to the kids and hunched himself down to their level.

"That priest you met when you came in will show you around. See if you like the Pantheon. It will be very different for you, I know; it was for me too."

Krek plucked one of the smaller iron symbols of Gorum off his ragged shirt and gave it to the seemingly eldest child. The near void of those followers in the Pantheon would make it clear who brought the children here.

"Keep that out so they know you're with me. Else they might think you're some annoying loafers."

He gave the youths a small push in the right direction, then returned to his friend. Though worried about him, Krek mustered a smile. "Wouldn't want them to see how much you put away - they might try it themselves!" As they walked to the chambers together, Krek did his best to conceal his worry - he wanted to reason for the Dwarf to hide this issue, especially if he thought Krek was too weak to handle it.

Krek would have asked the names of the kids on the way over and gave his own. Do you think you could give a few descriptions? I don't mean to be informationally tyrannical, but if anything happens with any of them, I'll have nowhere to begin with finding who is who.

Ayedah was shocked at the Hellknight's outrageous display. How...how dare he...

She rushed in to check on Maris, and after the Hellknight and the officer's angry exchange, she could not hold back any longer. She could not stop herself, it was taking all she had to not pull her hammer from her back.

She charged over and tried to push the Hellknight away and place herself between him and the guards. "Bastard!! Heartless bastard!!" Her voice was now something between a scream and a growl. Her fists trembled, she wanted to tear the man's helmet off and feed it to him. "How dare you?! She just lost someone dear to her and you....you.... They don't need you here! Korvosa doesn't need you! We can take care of our own problems!! GET OUT!" Her lip twitched, teeth gritted, eyes wild with anger. Give me an excuse, her mind screamed. Gods and spirits just give me an excuse!

She didn't have the sense of mind to realize she said "we".

um....oh oh

Krek:

I'll try and come up with some concepts. But please, for the love of Pete... I'll do so when (if) they become relevant. My NPC file is exploding as is. ;) By the way, i didn't find a name for your teacher. Any preference? Otherwise he's now Ulgran Hammershirk

The Dwarf quickly covered the distance, and pulled out a bottle of good, golden brandy. He filled it to the brim, and raised it. "First, something for courage."

With that out of the way, he let go of a contented grunt. "This city is taking a nose dive right to the nether regions, Krek. I've heard some say me thinking about going back to my clan in Janderhoff. Bunch of humorless pricks... They don't know me at all. Krek. Illeosa needs to get her pretty ass in the saddle, or the city'll buckle and throw her right off. I'd love to see a few good fights in the streets." He grinned. "Your kids there looked tough - but I'd not give them a chance.

With a quick refill, he added. "What'll you do? This city's your home. With Lamm out of the picture, and all this chaos coming up... good chance for you to prove yourself."

He pushed through the hesitation now. "Ah, who am i kidding. Listen boy, I don't know what this whole thing's about. But don't weigh yourself down. I mean, my heart halfway stopped when i saw that string of kids. Lord in Iron needs you fit, and I'm afraid you might now lose drive. With Lamm gone, and all."

Ayedah:

The Hellknight did not budge, but his visor turned to face Ayedah. "Aren't we a little impulsive? That might be seen as an attack on a member of the Order of the Nail. Be thankful I see this as a distraction at best." He stepped back, and turned his attention back to the officer. His attention, but not his head. "I would suggest you intensely question the savage."

The officer grimassed. "Sir, you still being here might be seen as dereliction of duty. You delivered your message, and received our report. I doubt a social visit is part of your orders." he barked out, stepping beside Ayedah to demonstrate on whose side he was - and Maris joined the two of them.

The Hellknight thought better than that. "As you will it, Guardsman. We are all allies here." With that, without any visible haste, he began to move away. He was hardly out of sight when the officer let go of a deep, bottled up sigh.

"Cursed Hellknights. I wonder if they ever did us any good. So, how is..." He stopped, shook his head. "No... oh it be damned. You willing to explain what happened? I'd rather not put that on the girl here."

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Ayedah glared at the Hellknight as he left. Bastard. You call me a savage and this is how you treat people? She came out of her angry reverie only when the officer sighed in relief.

She finally relaxed as the man complained, the weight of the moment leaving her tired. She was just realizing the gravity of what happened, and how much worse she could have made things for these people.

GM TerraNova wrote:

Ayedah felt somewhat sheepish now, even as she wondered at what the officer was about to say before he cut himself off. "I...I'm sorry if I've caused you any trouble with them."

She looked over at Maris, to see how she was holding up. "What she said happened happened. I came across them just in time to see it happen. There were people protesting against the curfew, complaining about the queen. One man threw a brick and..." She looked over at Maris again, uneasy with retelling explicitly the details of her friend's death in front of her.

"As soon as that happened I ran over to see if I could help. Those people, when they saw what happened they stopped. They wanted no part in that. After that, I tried to help Maris get Fe...to get back here for help as fast as possible. It was just one man. I could find him for you, Bren could tell me who he is." She hoped desperately that her appeal would reach the officer, and that Bren would listen to her. "He's a good man. He wanted no blood shed either. He'll listen to me if you let me go speak with him. He'll cooperate, I'm sure of it. If you send your men after all of them, it will only get worse. Their friends and their families will become part of the problem, and it will just keep going back and forth until they will be set loose." she motioned towards where the Hellknight left. "Please, let me take care of it. And if you must send someone, let me talk to them first."

She realized she had given so much information away that she meant to keep secret, and that she was practically begging the officer. Spirits, I wish I had a way with words...

"I am afraid of no battle. That is what my Lord needs - and _I_ need no brandy for _my_ courage." He let the pointed comment settle in before winking with his large eye. "Though it couldn't hurt."

Krek bottomed a spot of the brandy himself - the color almost as potent as the brew, he judged. Staring into nothing, he responded further:

"I don't know what to do now. Lamm is gone. The only thing I cared about other than that is my mother, and who knows where she is." He paused a moment, feeling the brandy ignite him a little. "All those wasted years due to that damned Lamm!"

He returned his gaze to his friend. "You feel this city a home to me? Nearly everyone turns their noses up to me, ignores me, or wishes I weren't there. Some home." Krek stared at his glass, wondering what business the merry followers had in the dour city. They were no cowards, and Krek doubted if they would be fearsome of the current situation.

Letting out a sigh, he set down the glass. "You feel I need to prove myself? To who? When you saved me, I was nothing but a sewer rat. Haven't I become more than what anyone hoped? At least I'm not stealing and killing in the slums! You say this new queen has a bit of proving to do herself. What do you think she'll do?"

Krek:

The Dwarf laughed. "Krek, you think i went soft in these few weeks? Its a reward for courage, not something to give it to you. Can't put true courage in any drink, you should know that." Somewhat more thoughtfully, he continued, "And yeah, i think you've still got a lot to prove. Not because i think you've done little - you've come farther than anyone could've told. Its because i believe you can go so much further still. I'm proud of you."

He stood up, and went over to the towering half-orc. "Illeosa's got to prove herself either a queen or a tyrant. And Krek... it may not be a good home, but can you really say its not where your life's been taking place? Where your friends and your enemies are? That's what I'd call home, and believe me, for a dwarf that's saying a lot."

Ayedah:

"So you were lying." Was the first thing the officer said, more disappointed than angry. Maris nodded, spiritless. She seemed ready to just lay down and die at that point. Still stood by Ayedah's side as she had when the Hellknight had left them.

"I see. Bren. Good men, when he doesn't drink. Tell me... Shoanti" The man did not slant the term in any negative way, even though it might not be the most polite address. Probably just his way of speaking without knowing her name? "When you met these men... other than the one that threw the stone, were they doing anything wrong? Looting, or destroying anything, or encouraging others to do so?"

Sense Motive DC 5 (yes, you can take 10, unless you feel Ayedah is too much under stress):

Spoiler:
He was plainly trying to coax a "No" out of her. Even though they had insulted the Queen, and argued loudly... could he be looking for a way to let the others slip through?

Two other guardsmen were now with their dead comrade. Slowly removing his armor, somberly going through the first motions to prepare a funeral.

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 3

Ayedah felt ashamed when the officer called Maris on her lie. She wanted to jump to her defense, say that she put her up to it, but what if that made the situation with the masons worse?

Even through her cluttered thoughts, and her still-pounding heart, she got the feeling the officer was trying to get one particular answer out of her. "No.", she said flatly.

She placed a hand on Maris' shoulder. "And Maris did everything she could. I swear on that. There was nothing more she could have done back there. Nothing one person alone could have done. Please, don't blame her for any of this."

Ayedah hated this feeling, the writhing snake in her stomach that let her know that so much for so many people might be riding on her words. She didn't even know what sort of punishment might befall Maris for lying to her commander. What would happen to the masons if they were all dragged into this? She almost wished the Hellknight had picked a fight with her. At least that was something solid, something she understood how to fight. This...this was like walking along the edge of a cliff while blind.

The officer made a gesture. "Alright. We'll round up who we can find. You talk to Bren when we have him." Despite the grimness of the situation, he managed a brief smile. "I'm Gedren Herno. Lieutenant of the Korvosan Guard, and in charge of this lovely neighborhood. And i guess i owe you something... Maris, dismissed. I don't want to see you on duty before next week, and if they burn the damn city down around our ears."

Maris remained close to Ayedah, nodded thankfully. "Thank you sir. And you. Without you, I'd be dead, i know it."

Grunting in a more-or-less fashion in response to his friend's assessment of Krek's "home," Krek was speechless to respond to the first set of words. What did he have to prove? To whom? Did he have a purpose at all?

He thought back to the past days events. Bringing the children here, Zellara's house, slaying Lamm, the Harrow.... yes, how had his reading played out? Something about balance - and the strong woman. His eyes lit up, and he looked down at his bearded rescuer.

"What do you take of the Harrow?"

Krek will relay his reading and the situation in the room during it to the best of his memory. He will also add on the reader's true nature found after Lamm's death.

Ayedah was relieved that Maris was apparently not in much trouble, though she still felt ashamed that she couldn't do more. Could not, or did not? "Th-that's alright. I'm sorry I did not get there sooner." she said, hanging her head slightly.

She straightened and addressed the officer. "Um, Lieutenant Herno, you mean I should wait here?" She wanted to ask him to allow her to go in the guards' place, to prevent all those people from having to be brought in, just to avoid a possibly ugly situation. But now, she was terrified of pressing the issue too far for fear of making things worse herself. "I mean...your guards are being pushed too far already. I could help." That's right, don't force the matter. Just push lightly and see which way he goes.

Her thoughts and intent are probably easy enough to read on her face; she hasn't quite settled down yet and that officer already played her once to get the answer he wanted.

Krek:

"Moths. Can't talk straight for the life of them" Was the first response, but not the only one. "I can't make much more sense of this than you. Looks like she was right about the Anarchy thing, though. City's ready to rip itself apart.

He emptied his second drink, and added "I mean... it seems like what i mean... now that your revenge is done, can you keep up what you are, are you in balance? Or will you swing back now, with not so much pushing you? But there might be something much more literal still coming up."

Ayedah:

The lieutenant sighed. "We'll be thankful for any volunteers, so much is certain. Not enough people by far, but if we let this rioting break out in full force, there'll be hell to pay. But you've done enough. If you'd just tell me where to find you in case we've any questions, that'd be all i ask of you."

Maris was still standing where she had joined Ayedah... seemed to not quite have understood it was really over. Only when one of the other guardsmen squeezed her shoulder, she began to back away, and slowly wander off.

"I...alright. I'm going to...well, I think I'm going to be at an apartment in Midland. She gives him the exact address of Danel's apartment. I was going to be going to the castle with some people today to return something to the queen." She didn't even think of keeping that secret out of prudence.

Ayedah found herself looking over her shoulder at Maris, uncomfortable with simply letting her walk off in her state. There's no telling what she might do... Looking back and forth between her and Herno, it was probably clear what was worrying her. "I should go."

If he doesn't protest:

Ayedah ran after Maris, trying to catch up with her. Her mind raced for things to say that would help. None came to mind. She did what she found herself doing all too often; she settled for what came to her first. "Maris, please don't blame yourself. You did everything you could have done." Even if her words were true, Ayedah wondered how hollow they must have sounded the moment she said them.

Maris kept walking even as she answered. "I don't blame myself. I don't blame anyone. I just... don't feel like feeling right now." The way she was walking, a sunset would have been very appropriate. Almost to mock the scene, the sun was instead high in the sky, approaching its apex.

She moved slowly down the same lanes that would lead to Daned's apartment, as if there was not a thing in the world to worry about right now. Or maybe not a thing in the world worth giving a thought to. "You know... He's right. I'm just going home. Ask my sister to take care of things for a while."
