Nothing to do with paladins. Everything to do with your ability score allocation, AND the fact your "group" consists of 2 PCs!

The new paladin is amazing. Just use a point system next time, you will see it will not be so difficult. And if you feel you don't have enough smite evil attempts, might I advise taking extra smite?

Sovereign Court

Feats should not be fixes to problems, if a feat is needed to fix a problem then the class feature needs to be fixed. In this instance the paladin needs two feats to fix class features. The first is extra smiting, the second is the feat that makes his spellcasting a swift action.

As for the stats, that wasn't a problem ever, the stats were a choice, I could've rearranged them differently and had a much better suited stat array, point buy doesn't make a difference. my original rolls were 9,10,12,13,15,16. I could have had a 16 cha, and a 17 str so no point buy doesn't fix a thing, that was a personal choice because of the way the rolls worked out to such a pattern.

Now for your assertion of the new paladin being nice, yes he is nice, once he hits 6-8th level he is a good class and a perfectly valid choice. That's what I've also said about the paladin from 3.5. High level paladins weren't the problem, it was low level paladins which sucked and while some changes have helped in that arena, some have hindered, and some have made no difference.

Overall I think the paladin has gotten some major improvements, however at low levels he is still getting the short end of the stick. I'm doing my best to make it that all levels are fun to play.

My level 3 Half-orc Paladin has a +8(14 str, 3 bab, masterwork lance, +2 charge) hit charge for 2d8+4 damage, +12 (18 CHA) on a smite for 2d8+10(possibly +16) mounted charge. mounted combat and ride-by-attack, that is not underpowered at low level. 19 ac, 23 vs target of his smite, 9 fort, 6 reflex, 6 will. I think the new paladins are the sweetness.
