Bill Bryson, anyone?

Books

I love this guy. He has this way with words, his books sounds so casual and humorous. I like, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid (hence the name), Sunburned Country, and especially A Walk in the Woods.

Bryson is very good. He is especially good at reading his own work. If you have the chance to hear hes stuff at books on tape/cd, take it. I'm never disappointed by him.

He has a great description of the exploits of Ned Kelly in Sunburned Country, that makes me chuckle just thinking about it.

I love his stuff...though I am assuming the Sunburned Country is the same book that was released as DownUnder in Australia.

I am actually rereading his book "Made in America" at the moment. For those who don't know, it is about how the American English Language came to be different from the British style of English. Full of amusing anedotes and interesting facts....very Bryson.

I threadjacked this after another post of yours, but I loved "...Thunderbolt Kid" read by him on cds. And thanks to you I have some more to look forward to.

Thanks for the CD idea guys, should be fun

Bryson's a 'Brief History of nearly Everything' was a good read. The section on the bacteria in our body made me realize I'm mostly kept alive just to provide a fertile breeding ground for innumerable bacteria and other microscopic beasties.

It's nice to feel loved. :P

Nveer heard of that book, is it as good as the others?

Scarab Sages

It is very, very good. And again, it is absolutely excellent if you can find it on CD. Bryson does the reading and the time melts away.

Awesome, can't wait!

Check out your local library to see if they have any of his books on CD.

So far I've only read "A Walk in the Woods" but I thought it was brilliant. The part where he describes his encounter with the security guard is priceless.

Try his 'Notes from a small Island" to get a feel for Britain as it really is...his comments on my home town of Inverness are totally accurate

Awesome, Wellard, never even heard of that book

Truly one of my favorite authors. He has a knack for making me laugh out loud while reading, and in my mind few greater compliments can be paid a piece of humorous writing than that.

I spent a week in Scotland this past summer. Ft. Augustus, Edinburgh, Inverness for a bit, traveled through the highlands -- I was utterly impressed. Scotland is beyond beautiful.

the Last Rogue, you should definetly join Crimson Crime, the Thieves Guild, under Off-Topic Discussions.

btw, I agree, I laugh out loud when I read him too.

Agreed; that one was a real gem. If only he'd do one for Germany...

He's done one of his travels in Europe called "Neither here nor there". I cna't remember if it includes germany.

To be honest, its not one of his better ones.

I think many of his earlier books are based on articles he used to do for newspapers. Certainly he used to do a column for one of the British papers.

Anywho, he is an amazing author.
