So, the Rams are back in Los Angeles.

How long will they linger this time before they are moved to a city that actually cares about pro football?

Ha! Chip Kelly is in San Fran, welcome to however many years (I give him two, three tops) of exhausted mediocrity.

As a Seahawks fan, I couldn't be happier, keep em in the basement Kelly! :-)

Dark Archive

I personally think it is a good signing. I think Chip is going to bring Colin back and they will be a team to contend with.
I think he got a bad rap in Philly much like Bill got in Cleveland. Just my two cents as a Seattle fan I would be worried.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

He's overrated, and he wears on people, Kapernick is way overrated as well.

Plus San Fran has the same issues as Philly, a defense drained of talent, and so so running game.

I'm not worried. :-)

Chip Kelly isn't Bill Belicheck, that's for sure. :-)

Dark Archive

We shall see. I think he is better than most people think. He had two very good season with the Eagles, I think they are going to regret firing him especially based upon who they hired to replace him. I don't think Petersen is the answer there.

On the plus side Chip doesn't have a team to trade away this time, the best players are already gone.

He had two ok seasons, mostly with the former guy's players (a guy that needed to go, things get stale, but is currently finding success on a team that had less than he left Chip with when he arrived), then nose-dived once he got rid of a bunch of those players in favor of his hand picked replacements.

The NFL is about talent and coaching. If you have a Belichick, some talent deficiencies can be masked or overcome by scheming, if you have a loaded roster, coaching deficiencies can be masked (Bill Callahan taking over Gruden's Raiders comes to mind). Chip's scheme was successful with the incredibly talented team Reid left him, it wasn't so great after he ran most of those guys off.

Time will tell, but Chip has to drop the "smartest guy in the room" nonsense and figure out that his cute little college schemes mean nothing when EVERYONE is fast, strong, and the cream of the crop. It's easy coaching in college, only about 2% of the players you face are possible pro material, it's hard when just about every player suiting up on Sunday is the cream of the crop.

Plus, he just stepped into a division with three of the better defensive units in the league, to take over an offense that has nothing in the cupboard. Good luck there. ;-)

Edit: re, the middle part. Lurie isn't a snap judgement guy, and he had a ton of success with Reid running the show. If anything, he was a little TOO patient with Reid toward the end, considering the amount of talent on the team. Chip has to have some serious personality and judgement deficiencies for Lurie to pull the plug before three seasons were in the books. There must have been some smoke to Jackson's, McCoy's, and (to a much lesser extent) Maclin's fire, as to how Chip carried himself and treated people (I doubt he's "racist", but I get the impression he is an arrogant p***k), and how he evaluated players.

Chip came in believing the hype surrounding his "genius". The NFL doesn't tend to treat coaches like that well.

I'd like to see if Chip will get it done in San Fran, but I have my doubts. I think that Franchise is gonna stay at the bottom for a while... they have serious owner/gm issues. I mean, Balke fired two Coaches in two years what makes anyone think Chip's gonna be ANY different than Harbaugh.

Chip makes Harbaugh look like Nelson Mandela when it comes to humility.

Chip Kelly would make a good QB coach, or possibly offensive coordinator.

So, what games are today?

captain yesterday wrote:

KC vs NE is the game now...though it looks like it is over as Andy Reid is coaching to his normal form.

Later it is Green Bay Vs Arizona...

Tomorrow it is...

Seattle vs Carolina

Pittsburgh vs Denver

Woohoo! The Panthers survive a second half run by the Seahawks and advance to the NFC title game.

I wish they had maintained their momentum after the half. Watching two quarters of conservative clock management while the Seahawks clawed their way back into the game was excruciating!

In the end, the lead built in the first half was just enough to ensure a victory.

Good game! Congrats on the win:-)

Sovereign Court

The Panthers vs. Cards game is going to be exciting!

If Pete Carol had only kicked the field goal in the first half...it might have been a different game.

But the next two games should be good.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

The Seahawks were done from the beginning.

I hope the Panthers win the SB personally, nothing beats that first win, nothing.

Of course, after that comes The Thirst, the thirst for more, and every year that goes without another super bowl win it becomes greater, and greater...

Hopefully, you make it to the club, drink plenty of fluids before you get here. :-)

Sovereign Court

I am thinking whoever wins the NFC championship will go on to win it all. I hope its the Cards but wont be surprised if its the Panthers.

I would never, ever, ever, ever, bet against a Bill Belichick coached Patriots team. Seriously. No matter the Vegas line.

Personally since my team was out of it ( The NY Jets for those curious) I was hoping the Seahawks would win because the last time that happened Pazio had a sale...

Now...I kinda of like thre Panthers, Cardinals and the Broncos...so anybody BUT the Pats.

Dark Archive

Well you all know I am routing for the Pats to win it again.

HD: I hear what you are saying and originally I bought into the smoke fire thing but then after listening to some of those guys complain I wonder if they may have been more of the problem which was why they got rid of them. Time will tell of course but my gut feeling is that Kelly is a better coach then others have said. Proof will be in the pudding if he can fix the 49ers.

I am not so sure the Eagles made the right choice in taking the OC Petersen to run the show there.

Andy Reid seems like a pretty good coach but man did he screw up with time management at the end of the game against the Patriots. Which hey I am not looking the gift horse in the mouth but it would make me second guess if I had the right coach running things. They took way too much time to run plays at the end of that game. Also makes me second guess Petersen. Though more than likely the blame would lay at Reid and Alex Smith.

Let me ask you do you think taking DemArco Murray was Chip Kelley's choice or Lurie's choice? I would guess Lurie's which leads me to believe he does make some snap decisions. As that was a bad one.

I see now why they scheduled us for the 1 o'clock game. The sun is setting, but is a bit of a darker blue than would be expected. Nice job 18, that's good defense.

Given the depths that team has been known to stoop to, despite being good enough that it's downright insulting?

Vegas doesn't account for rules violations when they make their odds.

Seems they played clean today, how nice.

They lost, too. Even nicer. I can just coast now.

Liberty's Edge

WoooHooooo! Panthers are in the Super Bowl!!!

That one felt good. All season long, people have been saying how the Panthers weren't legit because they had a weak schedule, and that when they played a "real team" like Arizona, they would be exposed.

At this point, the haters really just need to admit that they were wrong.

Keep Pounding, Panthers!

I don't think I would use the championship game as indicative of how the super bowl will turn out.

A lot can happen in two weeks, and then you have the actual game.

Sovereign Court

Im looking at entire seasons, and I guess im a little more daring

If you don't think Vegas accounts for rulebreaking, I don't think you understand sports betting. Example: 80% of public money was on the Pats to cover....guess who made an INSANE amount of money yesterday? Yeah, Vegas.

The bookies know what they are doing.

With the appropriate sacrifices to Blucifer, we will prevail.

So here's my take. I doubt it's worth even $0.02:

Carolina's Offense vs. Denver's Defense: This is the actual game. Cam Newton has been playing out of this world this season, but Denver's got a very good, vastly-underrated defense. This matchup alone will make the Super Bowl watchable. Unfortunately, I don't think Denver's defense will be able to keep up. I'm betting on Cam for 30 points. I don't think Denver can keep him under that much. I don't think he'll get a lot more, either. But I think he's good for 30 here.

And yes, I'm intentionally using "he". I think the offense wins or loses based on him and him alone this season.

Denver's Offense vs. Carolina's Defense: I never thought I'd say this about a Manning-led offense, but *yawn*. Manning is easily one of the smartest players to ever play. He'll likely be a Hall of Fame coach. But with a loooooooooooong history of choking in critical games, an awful season this year, and a lackluster performance against an anemic Patriots defense, I just don't see him managing anything against Carolina's defense. I'd rate Arizona's offense as significantly better than Denver's in all areas outside of QB intelligence, and they only managed 15 points. I'd bet on a big "0" for Denver, but mistakes happen, and Manning really is brilliant. But I'm giving them all of 10 points.

So yeah, I don't have a horse in this race (not even a Bronco), but looking at the body of work over the season, I think it's going to boil down to Cam Newton vs. Denver's defense, and I think he's going to win that battle.

NobodysHome's Prediction: Carolina, 30-10.

If you don't think Vegas covers any angle possible to make themselves money, I don't think you understand betting, period.

But yes, by all means, take a dig at the Patriots track record for getting caught cheating as a literal logical argument.

Why are you assuming I'm a Patriots fan? Or that I'm somehow defending them?

All of my comments and statements were specifically about betting on sports events.

1) I'd not ever bet against the Patriots (Belichick has a history of screwing betters)
2) I'm pretty sure the degenerate greaseball gamblers who set the lines know more than I about betting.

I don't, and never have, really cared much for or against the Pats as an organization. In fact, I'm not all that into the NFL except when it comes to fantasy football, and sports betting.

I am indeed bashing an organization I hold in contempt using your earlier post about Vegas odds.
You then appeared intent on telling me about how sports betting works.
I then corrected an apparent misapprehension about what I meant by what I wrote.

Literally all that has gone down here.

*eyeroll*

A year ago, I was more sympathetic, even if I thought it was likely overblown. Some minor but nonetheless shady thing, a blot on the team.

Since then I've changed my mind. Nothing to it other than the cocktail you get when you combine scientifically illiterate NFL executives with asbestos-cheerleader law firms who will deliver whatever finding their client pays for.

Hundreds of players cheat in the NFL thousands of times a year, but this wasn't one of them.

Liberty's Edge

I understand, from the teams' perspective, why there is a two week gap between the playoffs and the Super Bowl; it gives them a chance to have as many of their players at 100% as possible come game day.

I even get why marketing and network execs love it; two weeks of hype and merchandising.

As a fan of one of the remaining teams who isn't flying out to Santa Clara and doesn't need another hat, jersey, or t-shirt, it's a maddeningly long time to wait.

Yay, another Broncos fan!

Too bad, Carolina. Congrats, Denver!

Very happy with tonight's outcome. Was hopeful the Broncos would win.
Especially after the Cam Newton interview.

Also, despite the efforts of the entire NFL's media coverage to make the game about quarterbacks vs. quarterbacks...

Defense won the day. I like that.

Random Thoughts about SB50

The Commercials last year and this year were bad....
Did Peyton Manning really just say he was gonna drink "A bunch of Budwieser"....
Cam seemed to give up after Ginn's drop/interception...
Von Miller was on the same TexasAM squad as JManziel...and they weren't that good in college. I blame Manziel.
One more toe fungus, Irritable Bowel or Constipation ad and I might develop all three afflictions.
No one Dabbed, not even ironically after a strip sack TD, that was sad.
I think Peyton Manning had the worst, or one of the worst, statlines for a SB winning QB ever. I'd have to look it up to make sure.

Liberty's Edge

The Panther D played very well. If you consider that Manning had almost no 3rd down conversions, one of the Denver TDs was a defensive score and the other was set-up by a Red Zone fumble, Keuchly and company don't have much reason to hang their heads.

Cam and company, on the other hand looked terrible. Certainly, credit goes to the Denver D (6 SACKS, an INT, 2 forced fumbles), but even with all that, the Panthers were in it, if not for 4 dropped OPEN PASSES - all for long yardage. Also credit the Denver D for bottling up Greg Olsen.

The Panthers' Special Teams have always been sketchy. There's a reason Gano almost always puts it through the back of the end zone on kick-offs. Speaking of Gano, that clanker off the goal post was huge. Combined with the idiotic "not a fair catch" punt return, and the inability to make open field tackles just made it worse.

This sucks. What a stage to choke on. Congrats to Denver. Maybe the Cats will get it together in the off-season and make another run.

P.S. that challenged catch was a freakin' catch! It NEVER HIT THE GROUND. The Panthers got screwed on that call. Also, several uncalled late hits on Cam. That being said I don't think any of those calls cost them the game.

Agreed. All the wind was taken out of the Panthers sails after that play review it seems. That Bronco D though is really something they won this season no doubt. Clearly, Manning could have played in slippers (the field was so terrible it wouldn't have made a difference either way!)

The NFL has the worst catch rule. Every single season there is some damn controversy.
