Out of a party of four...

Name of PC: Errnmarr
Class/Level: Ranger 3
Adventure: Edge of Anarchy
Catalyst: Coup de graced by a necrophidius.
Story: After being drained 10 con by a flock of stirges and given five back by Lesser Restorations, Errnmarr made the decision that they should press forward. In the next room the fighter was dazed for six rounds by unseen necrophidii. The bard and cleric watched in horror as Errnmarr the trusty gnoll was surrounded and paralyzed long enough for a successful coup de grace.

May, cleric of Iomedae, has taken the body back to her church, where she and Errnmarr have been sleeping in return for various tasks. The high priest will cast Speak With Dead for free in order to bargain away the young savage's devotion to Lamashtu and replace it with the glory and light of Iomedae. If the conversion is successful, the church will raise the young gnoll in exchange for a lifetime of her service.

An update. Errnmarr was risen but only after shopping around for better deals. She was raised by a cleric of Asmodeus in exchange for a lifetime membership in the Darklight Sisterhood.

Errnmarr Darklight now owes 5% of her share of loot and a really good story after every adventure. And still worships Lamashtu.

Druganof
Barbarian 2
"Edge of Anarchy"
All the World's Meat
Catalyst: Seemingly wearing a bullseye

Druganof, Shoanti "bubba" of the party, was the primary ranged weapon target for Verik and a substantial proportion of the Cow Hammer Boys' light crossbow bolts. After an arrow and quite a few quarrels had him "doing a Borimir", the gang's two boars were sent out the ruined front window of the slaughterhouse. One of said boars, smelling a nice bloody meat snack, charged and disembowelled the bubba, scoring the first character death of the campaign.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Raedawn
Wizard 3
"Edge of Anarchy"
Vreeg's Chamber/Rolth's Room
Catalyst: Critical Hit Deck + Scorching Ray
Radawn, making ample use of her elven curve blade with her Hand of the Apprentice, barely missed the magically armored and shielded derro necromancer. Deciding that she was too dangerous to permit her nasty weapon to continue waving at his head, he defensively cast his single Scorching Ray of the day, scoring a nat-20 and drawing the "Power Surge" triple-damage critical hit card. 12d6 yielded about 53 hit points, reinacting the Jesse Ventura scene from Predator at Raedawn's expense.
Raedawn II (Lenette)
Wizard 3
"Edge of Anarchy"
Vreeg's Chamber/Rolth's Room
Catalyst: Type II Necklace of Fireballs
Raedawn's player, not at all enjoying the less-than-awesome ability score arrays her next two player characters had, draped them with a shift and a Type II Necklace of Fireballs. Raedawn II, screaming "Fire in the Hole!" as she ran pell-mell down the hallway from behind the party, narrowly avoided incinerating Druganof II as she executed an impressive Acrobatics check to belly-flop atop Vreeg, then set off her entire necklace. Given Vreeg's Reflex saving throw bonus, he took half of the 18d6 damage and was still standing, albiet well-charred in the aftermath. Raedawn II was not.
However...
Raedawn III (Lenette)
Wizard 3
"Edge of Anarchy"
Vreeg's Chamber/Rolth's Room
Catalyst: another Type II Necklace of Fireballs
Raedawn III replicated her immediate predecessor's performance and charged into the chamber, setting off another 18d6 cataclysm of fire damage. Vreeg, alas, was not to survive TWO volleys of fire damage of that magnitude. Fortunately, neither would virtually all of his swag nor Raedawn III.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jade II (Sorceror 3), Trisha II & III (Druid 3), Druganof III (Barbarian 3), Ranco II & III (Paladin 3)
"Edge of Anarchy"
Public courtyard, city of Korvosa
Catalyst: "crummy ability score arrays" + "Lenettes and Lennies FTW!"

Quickly realizing that most of the players had "crummy" ability score arrays awaiting them after their current character deaths, Our Heroes set out to - and with Blackjack's timely arrival succeeded in - rescue Trinia Sabin from beheading.

Unfortunately, multiple 63 hit point blasts of nonlethal damage eventually translates into lethal damage. As a rough estimate, six Lenny/Lennette characters suicided and about another hundred or so commoners died in the blasts.

The "Stinky Krakens" are certainly making themselves known in Korvosa...

Ha HA! Turin runs the CotCT? Can't wait to read more obits.

Soon as our current game wraps up (homebrew or RotRL, whichever comes first) I'm starting this one as well.

Gotta see about beating your score, Turin.

Scarab Sages

Name of PC: Yapuul Human
Class/Level: Monk level 4
Adventure:Side quest in seven days to the grave
Catalyst: Half-orc barbarian thief
Story: Party was asked by priest of Aroden to recover some stolen scrolls of remove disease. After a chase on the docks (loosely based on chapter 1 of the Mad God's Key in Dungeon 114)the half-orc was able to get his boat away before being engaged on the dock. Yapuul made a leaping jump at the boat but fell just short to the edge. While trying to climb on board he was brained with the half-orc's club. Critical hit. Before his corpse could be recovered a pair of jig-saw sharks had lunch.

The Exchange

I had a near half TPK with Edge of Anarchy. when trying to solve the problam of All the Worlds' Meat, two of my PC's tried to gain the trust of the regnade guards (to gather intelagence from inside the actual building before storming it). they didn't handle the diplomecy well, though, and at least one of them started a fight. try to imegine a wizard and a rouge in a melle encounter with 2 2nd lev. wariors... the rouge somehow managed to escape, leaving the wizard behind, to later be entrogaited by the thugs. when the rest of the party came to save him, the thugs were just a few hours shay of killing him for extra meet.

Pats Lord Snow on the shoulder in consolation.

Half a TPK is better than no TPK's at all - you'll get them next time!

Sovereign Court

Iozif (Fighter 3-wielded a mean halberd): Former member of the Korvosan Guard, he was fated to help Korvosa through its Time of Troubles. Unfortunately, the other PCs went off to a druidic circle between The Edge of Anarchy and Seven Days to the Grave-leaving poor Iozif to try and discover why the bodies were piling up and not being disposed of by himself (the Show must go on). He is now one of said bodies in a certain alleyway...

Scarab Sages

I almost forgot this one...
Name of PC: Krianer Dwarf
Class/Level: Fighter level 2
Adventure: Edge of Anarchy
Catalyst: Foreshadowing

Player decided after the death of Lamm that the dark natured dwarf was not the best choice for him so he asked if he could create a new character and have the brooding former Lamm's Lamb sulk into the sunset. While gathering his things before telling the other party members he was leaving, he came upon a conversation taking place in an alley where someone was trying to intimidate another. Thinking it could be his last hoorah to stand up for the little guy, he elected to intervene. When he tried to interrupt the two, he felt a quick stab to his neck, then another. The last thing he saw was a figure that looked like a red insect with a serrated rapier standing over him. The body was discovered the next morning, and the party was left with a mystery of how their companion was slain.

Name of PC: Druganof II
Class/Level: Barbarian 4
Adventure: 'The Hungry Dead', 7D2tG
Catalyst: 4 Negative Levels

Story: In the earliest hours of nightfall, our heroes tackled the mystery of Racker's Alley adjacent to Giotorri's Toys. Sadly, early in the course of the 9-round fight with 5 vampire spawn, Druganof II racked up 4 negative levels and died on the spot. No, he did not fight all 5 by himself - but he did present a tasty target for two or even at one point 3 of them before being brought low.

He is now prepping "Bubba", a Barbarian 5 wash-out from Cavalier School and a contemporary of Raedawn IV.

Had I bothered to tack on the extra hit points thier Toughness feat should have granted them under Pathfinder Beta, I might have had more to add to this tally... sighs regretfully

According to me, I have saved my party twice, once during the fight against Girrigz, because they had great difficulties to touch him and to make damage because of his DR10, so I decided to make less damages to my fighter and put him to 2 hit points and thanks to all my reduction of girrigz’s hit points and so on, they succeed!

The second time was against the aquatic druid in the boat. Because the damage caused by the druid was so strong that he was nearly to kill the party. At the moment when he was near to kill the fighter, I decided to make him strike against the rogue, just to save the fighter, once again. At the moment when 4 PC flanked him, I decided to make him go away, without coming back.
I’m afraid for the next of the story, because I’m asking myself if my party has good weapon, just masterwork for the majority of them.

I am surprised - there is MORE than enough loot up to that point of the campaign that they should be packing magical weaponry. Not to mention the 1st level 'magic weapon' spell...

Name of PC: Bumper
Class/Level: Ranger, 4th level
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Ambush by newly made lycanthrope PC (since retired)
Story: At the request of the oldest and most respected wererat in Krovosa, the party went to deal with the leader of the potential wererat uprising. They'd all agreed to not kill any of the other wererats if they could avoid it. During the fight, the wizard was bitten and failed his fort save. A cure diseased was tried, but the party didn't realise that the caster needed to be at least 12th level. As the cleric was working to stabilize the three wererats that had been knocked into negative hit points, the half-elf ranger suddenly (suddenly and surprisingly) decided to coup de grace one of them.
Later on, the wizard went wererat, at which point he was approached by the same wererat leader as before. She had been told what the ranger had done, so she told the wizard the wererat community would welcome him with open arms, but first he needed to be the weapon of the wererat's vengeance on the ranger. The wizard lead the ranger into an ambush and a few spells later, there was a dead ranger left to rot in an alley. The wizard then left the group to join the wererats, where he will presumably ultimately end up in Riddleport.
We now have a human fighter (member of the Korvosan guard) and a gnome sorcerer joining the group as replacements.

Name of PC: The Monk With No Tongue, Raedawn IV
Class/Level: Monk 8, Wizard 8
Adventure: A History of Ashes
Catalyst: Six Hevaro Tentacles
Story: Monk stealths into the room, characters make lots of noise casting buff spells, light coins are scattered hither and yon - a total of 6 - brightly illuminating the massive chamber. Monk acrobatically jumps atop the center of the bridge, gets hit and constricted by all 6 tentacles and is torn limb from limb from head from torso into a gory spray. Raedawn IV dies pretty much the same way - five tentacles instead of six rend her into chunky salsa.

Name of PC: Ariana Jadenheart
Class/Level: Sorceror 8
Adventure: A History of Ashes
Catalyst: The flashing mantis blades of four Red Mantis assassins
Story: Surprise round volley of thrown daggers + two full-round paired blade attacks (all sneak attacks) reduced the poor lass into dungeon lasagna.

Name of PC: Bubba
Class/Level: Barbarian 8
Adventure: A History of Ashes
Catalyst: Having only 18 total hp before death after failing the Will save against a 29 hp Channelled Negative Energy blast.

Name of PC: Leutnant Serai Leroung of the Sable Company
Class/Level: Aristocrat 2/Rural Ranger 4
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Rolth's lightning bolt
Story: The party had discovered that something might be happening at a party at Carowyn Manor by interrogating Jolistina (after finding some Death's Head Coffers in her home with locate object), but let her go. She later went to Rolth and told him, and he gave her more crossbow bolts in coffers and decided to accompany her to Carowyn Manor to make sure that the plan worked. When Jolistina started in the front, almost the entire party headed toward her. Leutnant Leroung was in the yard, and so she saw Rolth as he came over the hedge and went toward the back door. She got enervated twice and then hit by lightning, but she did so much damage to him that he ended up d-dooring away without killing any of the party-goers. She's up for a medal.

Name of PC: Thorgrim
Class/Level: Dwarf Fighter 6
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave (Temple of Urgathoa)
Catalyst: Rolth's lightning bolt
Story: Davaulus heard the sounds of combat, and raised the alarm. Rolth, Davaulus, six priest of Urgathoa and five plague doctors go to guard the blood vats. The PCs had a hard fight.

Name Leslie; Bubba
Class/Level Bard 12; Barbarian 12
Adventure Skeletons of Scarwall
Catalyst
* Leslie : being the cohort/back-up character for the Cleric of Zon-Kuthon
* Bubba : cheesing off the Demi-Lich in area 39

Story
* Leslie, Ranco's 'cohort' (aka replacement character on stand-by) tended to be in the back ground, had the extreme misfortune of being 'volunteered' for duty as the new Curator of the Star Tower at the ruins of Scarwall Castle. This of course made the Nightwing quite happy, now being free to not be loitering around the Material Plane after a few centuries AND having a new subject to properly indoctrinate some where on the Plane of Shadow...

* Bubba, having whacked the demi-lich Bishop for 40 points AFTER its DR 20/Vorpal, proceeded to roll a natural 4 (when he needed only a natural 7 or better to resist the effect) and die on the spot, his soul slurped into one of the eight ruby teeth glittering in the skull's jaw.

Name of PC: Leutnant Serai Leroung of the Sable Company
Class/Level: Aristocrat 2/Rural Ranger 4
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Lady Andaisin's slay living
Story: The recently-raised Leutnant Leroung was among a group investigating the Vaults beneath the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden, when she was hit with a slay living spell by a priestess of Urgathoa. The leutnant's heroic activities bought enough time for the rest of her party to slay the priestess before she could harm anyone else.

Name: Bubba
Class/Level: Barbarian 13th
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall
Catalyst: 4 gugs and the return of 'Max' the Desecrated Red Reaver Zombie

Story: Bubba and Thorgar were the point snacks of the party of 8 adventurers, having (eventually) descended the 1,500' shaft filled with cold luminescent blue fog to the chamber below. Winding their way forward, the adventurers proceeded to do battle with the trampling tunnel-space-fitting Gugs. Alas, awaiting them as well was their long-lost zombified red reaver "Max" at the shore of the undergound lake.

A 2nd awesome blow (crit - ouch) sent him adjacent to Max, who proceeded to snack on the tasty barbarian. A critical failure with his own falchion drawing a crit-yourself card and a botched Acrobatics check to escape Max's face-crunching presence later, and Max had secured himself a tasty player character treat.

Name of PC: Mabven
Class/Level: Half-elf Cleric of Serenrae 11
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall
Catalyst: Belshallam's strength draining breath.

Name of PC: Mezza
Class/Level: Halfling Wizard 11
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall
Catalyst: Belshallam's strength draining breath.

Name of PC: Nicodemous
Class/Level: Halfling Rogue 11
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall
Catalyst: Belshallam's strength draining breath.

Story: Having decided to take care of the dragon (they have a habit of picking a powerful creature and heading straight at him) to make entering and leaving the castle a little easier (and plus they are suckers for a good dragonfight), the group confronts Belshallam in the courtyard. While they are down a fighter they have a controlled skeletal guard and a summoned Bralani.

The Bralani survives a full attack, a breath weapon, a vampiric touch and being grappled and then dropped unceremoniously into a player cast cloudkill. The rest of the party takes two breath weapons to the face, most of them failing the first time and all of them failing the second. Reduced to 0, 0 and 3 strength, the party is completely at the mercy of the shadow dragon. I still have not decided whether or not he will kill them all or keep them around as playthings. The halflings would make cute bookends.

The players have decided to form a party of adventurers hired by outside forces to retrieve their old character's bodies for resurrection. We'll see how that goes.

While they were a little low for the encounter, they insisted on heading straight to Scarwall and virtually straight for the dragon, so it is not a case of DM cruelty.

The Umbral Dragon is chaotic evil as I recall, and has not had a fresh snack in some time.

However, might I suggest that the dragon barters the former characters to Mithrodar as replacement spirit anchors and spectre minions attached to the character that has become the new spirit anchor ? Dragon gets freedom, Mithrodar gets a far more easily controlled anchor, players get a nasty scare as they attempt to retrieve the corpses of the two hobbits and the half-elf. :)

Turin the Mad...Genius!

It should be no surprise, eccentricity is rarely inverse to intelligence.

Part of my reticence in killing them was the soulbinding effect and its effect on player morale. However, how am I going to create the atmosphere of terror the masterwork module demands without underscoring dramatically the great risk that must be taken to obtain Serithtial?

I think the scenario you outline above may be perfect for illustrating the nightmare of possibilities that await the careless adventurer in the halls of this brooding beast of a castle.

Thanks for inspiring my inner fiend.

An NPC, but it's my only kill through the first two adventures:

Name: Majenko
Class/Level: Pseudodragon
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: PCs can't deal with a flyer

Story: When Lady Andaisin takes to the air, the PCs once again realize that they have no way to deal with a flyer (the flying Duergar in Rolth's lair having demonstrated that to them earlier). With no other options available, Majenko - who has been hugely beneficial to the party in scouting out invisible opponents and handling communication with his telepathy - is sent up for the Hail-Mary-try-to-put-her-to-sleep. He misses. The Lady crits with her scythe and Majenko is killed.

Name: Jade - actual character name is Ariana Jadenheart
Class/Level: Sorcerer 14th
Adventure: Crown of Fangs
Catalyst: Full-round sneak attack by a Turinized version of Mistress Kayltanya

Story: What else is there to say about six sneak attacks hitting and dealing more than double the character's maximum hit points?

The Exchange

Name of PC: Mr Stoa', Silas, Cosgrove
Class/Level: Rogue/Warlock 5/1, Wizard 6, Favoured Soul 6
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Picking a fight with Ramoska
Story:

Buoyed by having taken down the Vat room and the Pseudodemon even with the alarm bells ringing the group headed back to that one locked door they hadn't dealt with behind them before pressing on. Picking the lock they were in and found the boy strapped to the table and Ramoska asking them to leave. Mr Stoa' obliged and then signalled the party to follow him in. Darkness went up as this was their new trick to make it more difficult for their opponents to hit them (largely due to some bad dicerolling from the DM) and the Scout of the group and Mr Stoa' moved in to flank and sneak attack (well Mr Stoa could harm undead) the 'Vampire'.

As the darkness filled the room Ramoska cast Fire Shield upon himself and moved around the room. The attacks did minimal effect apart from to annoy Ramoska. The other two party members shot at him which did a little more, but the general concensus was to start to run away - but not very fast or in fact to actually leave the room. One lightning bolt later striking Mr Stoa, Silas and Cosgrove saw Silas lying on the floor bleeding out. Cosgrove moved to stabilise him and Mr Stoa' moved to get him. Ferris stayed in the room and kept shooting so Ramoska tried and failed to freeze him in place.

Moving out onto landing and Stoa' is dragging Silas away having had Bull's strength cast upon him. Ferris continues to snipe at Ramoska and so he responds by casting web at them to try and secure some supper to heal himself. Stoa' avoids the web, but everyone else is caught. Attempting to leap and pull Silas free, Stoa' vaults over the catwalks, but leaves Silas' leg dangling as his efforts are for naught.

Ferris decides that to help free his unconscious compatriot from the web he will fire a fire arrow at his area to let him be freed and bundled away. Cue one dead mage. First death for Ferris.

More spells and shooting followed and Cosgrove was freed from the web by fire arrow, but is left with limited escape routes because of where the web is and where Ramoska has stood. Ferris continues to annoy whilst Stoa' heads for the door. Annoyed with being peppered by arrows Ramoska looks Ferris in the eyes and dominates him commanding him to head after Stoa'.

Cosgrove was still trying to escape and failing miserably. Ramoska decides that he cannot be bothered with a fair fight and enfeebles the Priest of Torag so that he can pin him and feed easily. Whilst the two stealthy partners stalked one another Ramoska helped himself to the Favoured Soul's blood.

Stoa' manages to tumble past his 'friend' and heads back to save Cosgrove. Ferris follows and Stoa' manages to get into position to attack the Nosferatu which makes Ramoska put down his meal and respond. The pair of them attack and a lot of damage is done to their adversary and it looks like they might just pull this out of the bag. Ramoska commands that his thrall deal with this impudent rogue. First attack against Stoa' this time puts him down, though he's not quite dead yet. Cosgrove manages an escape and bolts for the exit pursued by Ferris. Outside the door and Cosgrove helps free Ferris from the domination, who promptly fires again at the Nosferatu. They just would not leave him alone.

The Nosferatu responds by enveloping himself in his cloak and appears to block one of their ways out. He offers that they leave by the other door. The trapped one, but still a chance to get away. Cosgrove's response is to run back to save Stoa' and Ferris is once more the thrall of Ramoska.

As he pounded along the catwalks towards the fallen rogue Cosgrove felt a sharp pain in his chest and looked down to see his lungs exposed. Ferris kill #2. Whilst in the corner Stoa' himself finally succumbs before the Nosferatu can attend to his wounds to provide another subject to experiment on - Ferris kill #3.

Things looked bleak for Korvosa with the hope for the cure to the plague lying on these corpses. Ramoska commanded that his thrall dispose of the bodies and bring their trinkets to him whilst he returned to his experiments. Zellara used all her might to free the assassin of his friends and he headed into the night to find some help that might save the city with a little direction from the Harrow deck.

(Next session is starting with a remorseful Ferris trying to put right his wrongs and get the cure for the city out. The group may have now learned not to pick fights with everyone.)

Name of PC: Sajan (an iconic NPC helping out the party)
Class/Level: monk 3
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Leutnant Serai Leroung of the Sable Company (after she was turned into a zombie)
Story: Leutnant Leroung lay at the feet of the just-deceased Lady Andaisin while her companions healed those who could still be healed and searched around for what was going on. When Lady Andaisin surged to unlife her first action was to cast animate dead on Leutnant Leroung, who in turn took down Sajan.

i believe the rule of the sneak attacks only works for the 1st attack, thet others she sees coming so wouldn't count as sneaks... why? its simple a sneak attack is a well aimed attack, the others for the quickness about that artenot.

As far as I can tell, sneak attacks apply for every attack in the round.

Care to provide rules provinder to the contrary ? I know a great many people would be overjoyed at the prospect. :) Thanks in advance!

And no, I am not trying to be snarky - I am genuinely curious as to why sneak attack works in this fashion.

Catalyst: Owlbear skeleton
Story:Going into the first encounter of the cemetary the monk decides to take on the Owlbear skeleton Bruce Lee style, and after two hits 'Bruce' wasn't doing so good. *shakes fist at cleric* damn channeling positive energy saved Moira just as fighter and paladin took skeleton down!

Name of PC: Corporal Prik (Sable Company) and Efreet
Class/Level: aforementioned fighter and paladin both level one

Catalyst: Hellknights
Story: I decided to make the end of EoA massive combat fiesta. I threw 5 3rd level Hellknights in there to up the anty. Both prik and Efreet were poned hardcore before that damned cleric and her channel positive energy saved them in time. *shakes other fist at cleric*

note to self: Do something about that darn cleric

As far as I know any attack that is denied dex bonus (such as when they are flat-footed, prone, flanked, etc.) recieves sneak attack as the rogue has the advantage to pick you apart hence making rogues deadly. If there is a rule that says only 1 sneak attack in a round I too would love to know that, as I have a handful of rogue players who like to gang up and thug down the opposition, also my players would like it as well I'm sure after a a 7th level rogue/2nd level expert got 2 attacks with a pick on a prone pc and ended him pretty badly.... :P

Okay, this character is actually still alive, but he's died twice so I felt it appropriate to add him to the list.

Name of PC: Axel
Class/Level: Monk 10
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall (both times)
Catalyst: Bad luck
Story: The first time Axel died, he went to to toe with one of the gargoyle brutes. He beat the gargoyle pretty badly, but he just couldn't keep up with the damage the gargoyle was dishing out. He was saved with Breath of Life. The second time, half the party chose the infused soul option, the other half didn't. Axel chose the undead bane option. He fell victim to the demilich's Wail of the Banshee ability. Only two people made the save, which happened to be the other two who didn't chose the infused soul option. Four other PCs (with the infused soul option), one cohort, Trinia (who had the infused soul option) and Shadowcount Sial all failed their saves.
Axel was saved by the cleric again with a Raise Dead.

Just remember the evil cleric bomb when the party is going up against a dozen 2nd level clerics of Urgathoa.

I know, I mince with anticipation.

I'm not sure why this keeps coming up, there was plenty of answer from the Sage, FAQs, and various boards on WotC's site that I figured everyone knew by now. As it is, Stewart is right. Sneak attack applies WHENEVER dex is denied, or when you flank the opponent. There is no 1/round limit, save maybe if you were stealthed before you started to attack. Then the first attack is the only one to get SA. Otherwise, if you're invis, the opponent is blinded, you're flanking, etc. you will get SA every time.

Name of PC: Kain
Class/Level: Elf bard 4
Adventure: Seven Days to the Grave
Catalyst: Wererats are very unhygenic
Story: Descending into the sewers at the behest of old Yelloweyes, the party found the Girigz's warren. There, they did battle with a group of wererat sentries. One of whom bit the unfortunate bard for 1 hp of damage. Roll vs. filth fever. Fail. Incubation time of *rolls* one day. Roll vs curse of lycanthropy. Fail.

Kain: Any chance of finding some wolfsbane?

DM: It grows around graves, so you might find some in Grey District with a survival check.

Found wolfsbane. Eats wolfsbane. Fails to shake off lycanthropy and fails vs the wolfsbane's toxic effect and loses about 7 str.

Kain: Guys, I'm not feeling well. You can finish off the wererats without me. I'm just gonna go home and die.

At this point, there's a 35% chance of being exposed to blood veil. Which of course he was. So the next morning, our poor bard wakes up with filth fever AND bloodveil in fairly advanced stages. And he's gonna become a wererat on the next full moon. Or he would, if he could pull out of his diseased nose dive. But with his now hefty con penalty, he doesn't.

Blood Veil kills the average citizen in seven days. Kain died in three.

Wow Vigil ... just, wow. And no one in the party had Heal available to help their bard out? Double ouch... ^_^ Nice, hideous character death though - hope the player put together the replacement while his bard was dying so horribly.

The party was fourth level, so no remove disease. The cleric only had one rank in heal, and the bard had already blown all of his harrow points earlier in the adventure re-rolling fortitude saves vs. blood veil. It seems like fate.

And even if he'd survived, he still had lycanthropy. I have an auspice die from werewolf: the apocalypse that lets me roll for the phase of the moon. Which came up waxing gibbous. So about three days till the next full moon. Which wound up being the day he died.

In a single night, Kain became the unluckiest character our group has ever seen.

And his next character is a paladin. I guess he doesn't want to ever get sick (or fail saves) again.

Name of PC: Bort
Class/Level: Level 6 or 7
Adventure: Escape from Old Korvolsa
Catalyst: Stupid Cleric
Story: The Temple under the Rakshasha Manor. They made lots of noise Outside, and the Cleric inside and 2 Dire king Cobra's had time to prep. By the time they opened the door the king kobra's were on either side of the doors, while the cleric was invisible. They looked inside and saw no one so they were going to move on, then the cleric decided to inspect. When he moved in he got 2 AoO against him. I let him role his own con damage and he rolled 2 10's. The party just closed the door and jammed it shut.

That was Character 1 of 4 for him. He has played 2 clerics, 1 was reincarnated by the shoanti Druids, then a wizard that was Ejected from the party after insulting the parties sorcerer. Now he is playing a barbarian.

This has got to be, in all my years of playing, the unluckiest character I have ever seen ::laughing:: Love it!

Name of PC: Nils
Class/Level: Shoanti Fighter 8
Adventure: Escape from Old Korvosa
Catalyst: Betting on the Wrong Horse

Bahor convinces the group to head down to the Vivified Labyrinth. There they meet Vimanda posing as Orsini. They don't fall for that, so Vimanda changes to "Nudhalli, a rakshasa posing as a Arkona human". Vimanda, as Nudhalli, weaves a tale of Arkona deception and betrayal convincing the party that Bahor is the real evil-doer here, and that he should be dealt with first. The party falls for it.

Battle breaks out in the garden. A few rounds into that Bahor appears at the railing above. Nils, still under the effects of a Levitate, rises up to battle Bahor. Nils manages to shout out a "He has HOW MANY attacks?" before going down.

He's not dead though. The rest of the party rushes upstairs and tries to battle Bahor. Nils is healed, but Bahor quickly drops him again. He's not dead though! The party heals him again, Bahor quickly drops him again, this time killing him.

Darwin, the party bard, says as Nils dies, "Looks like we bet on the wrong horse."

Nils, the Shoanti power-attacker
Nils, walking death with that Earthbreaker
Nils, who single-handly defeated the wererats and the zombies at the Carowyn manor
Nils, no more

(The party paladin and rogue were dropped as well. The rest of the party fled at that point, leaving their companions behind.)

Name of PC: Mistblade
Class/Level: Elf Rogue 4/Wizard 8
Adventure: Crown of Fangs
Catalyst: An efreeti and a wish

After defeating a group of Grey Maidens, half the group went on to do other things. The other half stayed behind to loot the bodies. Along come the Varisian "rebels". They basically ignored the Varisian's insults until Mistblade contemptuously dismissed them and started to move on. At that point, a Varisian said "I wish you'd die."
Mistblade missed his first fortitude save since second level and was killed by a Finger of Death. He has since been reincarnated as a female half-elf, much to his player's annoyance.

Name of PC: Mabven, formerly the Bael Mavon
Class/Level: Cleric 12
Adventure: Skeletons of Scarwall (or as it will henceforth be known: The Devourer of PC's)
Catalyst: Dread Wraith, Nihil
Story: So, as previously noted (and with due debt to Turin the Mad) the PC's were struck down by Bellshalam, who then turns around and makes a deal to have their souls replace him as a spirit anchor.

A party of PC's is hired to retrieve their bodies by a "Kindly Cleric of Pharasma" (aka Shadowcount Sial in disguise) and encounters the Bael Mavon (Mabven's undead self) a creature that is as much a wellspring of darkness and fire as the living cleric was of light and fire.

The transformed courtyard is rent with magma and sends up a thick, acrid column of smoke. The new PC's defeat the Bael Mavon and his two spectre servitors with not inconsiderable difficulty and retrieve the bodies, having jumped through all the necessary hoops to break the anchor that holds the spirits.

Newly invigorated, the rescuers depart and the party resumes exploration of the castle. They manage to steal Serithtial from Kleestad, killing him in the process (more incidentally than purposefully) and dispatch Castothrane and a few other denizens before heading to the Scarwall heights to continue their (for the moment) brilliant and fortunate run.

They suspect devilish influence but while routing some gargoyles, they randomly encounter a dread wraith. The cleric dies from Con drain while trying to save the wizard, who went down to -2hp. He is resurrected (again) by Sial.

They head back to the heights, and face Nihil, who is hiding (Improved Invis) with two devil servitors. One Blasphemy, one Horrid Wilting and one Chain Lightning later, the Cleric is down. Abandoning his body, the other PC's flee. It looks like that player is now rolling a new PC.

I wonder if the Bael Mavon may rise again, as the castle is short a few anchors at this point.

wewt!! Indirect player character deaths continue to stain my GM screen ... ^_^ You could give your players my condolences - but that'd be dishonest. Cleric = excellent spirit anchor after all... and if said cleric needs a screening force, well, there's all the corporeal dead that are scattered in bits and pieces everywhere, what's to say the controlling spirit doesn't feed him a few dozen names and a smallish supply of diamond dust, rez (and undeadify) some bodyguards via, oh, create undead or create greater undead.

A particularly nasty twist is that the cleric's spirit is an incorporeal undead (due to the anchoring process) while said cleric undeadifies his own corpse - talk about unpleasant. ^_^ If you can procure some dust of sneezing and choking - since undead do not need to breathe - for his corporeal minion to toss, it'd just make the scene all the creepier...

Name of PC: Mernak Falcon (“Noctumbra”)
Class/Level: Male Human Rogue 3/Wizard 5/ Arcane Trickster 1 (63 hp)
Adventure: Escape from Old Korvosa
Catalyst: Emperor cobra

Story: The Temple under the Arkona Manor. Avidexu casts haste, a cobra attacks the rogue: two attacks, both hit. Noctumbra fails his ST, -6 CON poison. The cobra attempt a grapple check, it is successful, other free bite attack. The PC has 11 hps here (52 points of damage in a round!). Next round… PC killed.

Impressive. And I had thought that the snakes were easy!

Those snakes are MEAN!

My group almost lost its barbarian. He was only saved because of the cleric throwing three lesser restorations on him before the second saving throw a minute later.
