Draconis (formerly known as RoyalCon) is Montreal's annual gaming convention (http://www.draconismontreal.ca). This year the event will take place on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October. I signed-up to DM two PFS scenarios: Silent Tide and Frozen Fingers of Midnight.

I know a few Paizonians are from the Montreal area, so maybe this might interest you...

The more the merrier :)

Scarab Sages

DAMMIT! finally something happening on my own turf and i'm stuck in Calgary until December!!! GAH!

Lucky.

It would be great if anyone who goes can post a summery or review of the Con afterwords so that those of us who can't go can still have an idea of what went down.

I live in Ottawa, so it's not too far for me to get there, but I don't think I can afford the hotel stay after having done both Origins and Gen Con.

I'll have to think about it. If I do go, I'd want to run slots of Frozen Fingers, of course.

Ottawa-Montreal is only a 2 hour drive. You could come and be back home on the same day.

It would be so cool to get Frozen Fingers DM'ed by "the Man" :)
I would get a chance to be a player on that one. My Chelaxian Sorcerer is dying to be played... or is it my Chelaxian Druid? Man I have to think of a character now !!!
:)

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

I'll look into it, but I don't own a car. Maybe I could find someone else who is driving down for the Saturday or something. Or I could rent a car for the weekend.

It looks like fun.

I'll also have to see how my wife feels about me disappearing for another con, and this week is not the week to bring it up... ;-P

Craig,

I might be interested in doing a Saturday trip. I'll have to look at my schedule to see if it is a good weekend, but if it is, I would have no problem driving.

Of course I would want a seat at the table if I haven't played in the scenario by then.

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

That would be excellent!

Dark Archive

Man! We're looking at a Taldan invasion here. Good thing you guys are all decadent fools. :)

But really. That would be awesome.

Sovereign Court

Wow, Craig, it would be AMAZING if you could DM for us!!!
But no pressure. I don't want to put your marriage in jeopardy. :)

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

I think it will be okay. My wife is awesome and supportive, but not a gamer. I just don't want to overtax her incredible patience.

If I've got a ride down and it doesn't cost much I'm sure she'll go for it.

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

How kid-friendly is Draconis? I might be able to make this a family event...

The Rambling Scribe

Sovereign Court

I only went once, I didn't see any children there, but I didn't see anything that seemed to be offensive to children, either. I guess if they're old enough not to be running around the place, screaming, the whole day, it would be ok. How old are your kids?

If they're old enough to play D&D, they should be fine I think. :)

Dark Archive

Hi Craig,

If you have any question about the Con itself, you can contact Chris Hammock (christopher dot hammock at mail dot mcgill dot ca). He's one of the organizers and a very nice person. Maybe he can tell you more about accommodations for kids and family. As it turns out, the Con won't take place at the same location as last year, so I'd be hard press to say what the new setup has in store. All I can say is that it is still in the general downtown area, not too far from a subway station.

Also, might I say that Draconis is your typical "small Con". Nothing like GenCon obviously, but still small by any other yard-stick you might use. Yet, as they say in French "Dans les petits pots, les meilleurs onguents" (In small pots, the best ointments).

As far as things to do in Montreal on that week-end, I couldn't find anything outstanding (except for Draconis of course :).
There's a Pop Montreal festival (http://www.popmontreal.com/en), but I couldn't really tell what that was really about.
Then, you have your usual Montreal activities: http://www.montreal.com/tourism/kids/index.html.

Hope it helps...

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

My wife was just talking about how long it's been since we took the kids to Montreal, and that we should go. I was thinking we could combine the two, but I don't think that will work. That said, because we don't get there often, the regular Montreal stuff is pretty interesting for us. I know my son wants to see the Insectorium, frex.

In any case, I think I'll be able to make it.

Let me know when you're ready for a vacation to Toronto... ;-)

Sovereign Court

Woohoo!!!

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

What cons are running in TO these days? I went to Pandemonium a few times when I was younger. My brother (Scribbling Rambler) lives in Oshawa, and Mike Kortes lives in Toronto. I'd definitely like to runs some PFS in Toronto if the timing and travel work out for me.

Actually, my family and I travel to Toronto every March break as well (my wife goes to a conference that includes free hotel and subsidized travel). I could probably set up and/or participate in a PFS game day or something then.

I didn't know Mike was from Toronto...

Hum... maybe he could come and DM Silent Tide... hum... :)

I honestly don't know anything about conventions in Toronto, unfortunately. I was just hoping a DM would magically show up at my house to run a game. ;-)

Maybe I should get into the convention scene, though; it sounds like fun!

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

I registered for Draconis, unfortunately, I double submitted frozen fingers as an event. I also slotted Hydra's Fang.

I will only be able to make the Saturday. Dam'Sadar, if you want to play FF, don't read it in advance, please. It's pretty straight-forward to prep, you should be able to do so in a short time after playing it. At GenCon I ran a slot zero literally at midnight and one of the players DM'd it the next morning at 8 am. I'll be happy to answer any questions after my slot if that will help.

The Rambling Scribe.

Dark Archive

I don't know if the Draconis is big enough to have 3 slots with the same mod...
I will probably run Silk Caravan instead and that way give Montrealer a chance to try all 4 mods.
And don't worry, I haven't read any scenario yet. I wouldn't want to spoil my own fun.

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

I'm not actually planning on running two slots of Frozen Fingers, I just accidentally hit the submit button twice...

That said, if you are willing and able to switch to Silken Caravan, then we could give the con attendees the full four scenarios. I actually haven't read or played Silken Caravan yet, but maybe I will have by then. I won't be around for your Sunday slots in any case though. :-(

Dam'Sadar and I are going to play in both your games on saturday. He's going to DM Silent Tide on sunday morning and I'll DM Silken Caravan on sunday afternoon (in the slot when he was initially planning on running FF, which he is going to cancel). The draconis site is down at the moment, but we'll try to set things up like that once it comes back up. ;)

That way, he and I will get to play all 4 of the initial PFS adventures in one weekend. Woohoo!

Correction: we'll both get the chance to play 3 mods and DM 1 :)

Thanks again Moonbeam, and Craig, for giving me a chance to play!

Just hope I get my faction T-Shirt by then...

Youppi!

I can play the Pathfinder Society scenario at my town! Je vais pouvoir jouer aux scénarios de la Pathfinder Society dans ma ville!

Are they some people that will organize a game before the convention? I plan to play some Living Forgotten Realms also in the con.

The event will take place at "Centre St-Pierre" near the Beaudry subway or metro station.

Where the "Dans les petits pots, les meilleurs onguents" expression comes, I never hear it in my life.

Sovereign Court

Nice to know their are other Paizo fans in Montreal. I might be interested in playing through Frozen Fingers since I've already played through Silent Tide. Having recently arrived from GenCon, I was fortunate enough to play through Silent Tide, Murder on the Silken Caravan, Hydra's Fang, and the Second Darkness Preview. Of the three Pathfinder Society adventures, my favourite was probably Murder on the Silken Caravan, since I was lucky enough to have the adventure's author, Greg Vaughan, as a GM. Good stuff.

Dark Archive

Here you go, now you get the chance to get Frozen Finger's author as DM.

Did you survive the previous adventures?
That would make you level 2 by now.

Really?

True, I have quite a few weird and old fashion expressions in my repertoire. But I thought that one was generally well known... :)

I went into the negatives pretty much every adventure (mostly because I play a reckless Andoran barbarian) but I survived to make level 2.

Hi Craig,

I checked Draconis' timetable this morning and noticed that your two games are scheduled:

- one for the morning (9AM to 1PM), and
- one in the evening (7PM to 11PM).

Is that what you asked for, or was that a mixed-up?

I'm asking because, if you were planning to get back to Ottawa that same day, that last game might be kind of late.

I'm currently in touch with the organizers, so let me know if you want me to have them modify things...

Sovereign Court 1/5 Contributor

Thanks for the heads up, and yeah, if possible, I'd rather be able to get out of there a little early, especially if I'm dependent on someone else for a ride!

Thanks!

Hi-ho! Convention organizer here. :) I'll see what I can do about getting your evening game moved to the afternoon slot. We want to maintain good relations with insiders, obviously. ;)

Thanks to the great help of Chris and others at Draconis, Pathfinder games scheduling are now in order.

We're looking at 4 Pathfinder Society scenarios being offered.
Here is what we have:

  • Saturday October 4th: 9AM to 1PM -- The Frozen Fingers of Midnight, DM: Craig Shackleton
  • Saturday October 4th: 2PM to 6PM -- The Hydra's Fang Incident, DM: Craig Shackleton
  • Sunday October 5th: 9AM to 1PM -- Silent Tide, DM: Dam'Sadar
  • Sunday October 5th: 2PM to 6PM -- Murder on the Silken Caravan, DM: Moonbeam

There are still some spots left for these games, so if you're interested, now would be the time to register.
Especially you, Armac! I would hate it if you couldn't play... and give Craig a lift :)

Man am I looking forward to this!

I'll be there to DM some D&D 4e.

I can also Run Frozen Fingers and Hydra Fang... I know these adventures by heart now as I DMed both at Gen COn.

If there is a demand for it, count me in as a GM!

Hi! Another guy from Montreal here. French, btw.

Any of you thought about some kind of forum where we can discuss, organize play sessions and invite wannabe players? (And maybe do it in french) Maybe we could use the Blackguard forum? (I'm Orb there) Unless Paizo has some kind of plan to make regional sub-forums for PFS?

I also talked with the Carta Magica store manager and he's willing to participate and let us use his play room on a regular basis.

My main goal would be that we gather enough GMs so that we could play the scenarios before we DM them to other players, including our home groups. That way, we get as few DMs as possible that burn each scenario.

Let me know what you think!

Hi Djoc,

That would be great. Maybe we can discuss it at Draconis... you're coming, right :)

With luck we can "convert" a few people over to PFS! (says the guy from Cheliax... muhahahaha !!!)

See you there!

Hey everyone

Me and my gaming group just started Experimenting with the pathfinder world. And I have been wanting to get some extra games in and learn more about the setting so organized play seems like the way to go.

So I will see you guys at Draconis.

Dark Archive

Hi Craig,

Did you get confirmation from Armac that he still can provide you with a lift to Montreal on October 4th?

I'm asking because I don't think he has registered to any of your games yet (and there are only 1 or 2 spots left) and I haven't heard back from him...

I've been too lazy to register and don't really have time right now, but I will still be coming and giving him a lift. (Of course we haven't talked about it in a while but Craig if you read this, I'm still in.)

I'm looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Are they any Dm that does a game before the Draconis convention?

Not that I'm aware of.

Djoc mentioned that Carta Magica could host regular games. My thought was that Draconis would be the place to meet like-minded players and DMs and discuss the possibility of having PFS games in Montreal...

Excellent idea, and IMHO a pre-requisite to any type of organized play.

I don't know about "Blackguard", but most of the Living Greyhawk's regions (I was one of the organisers for Quebec) has a Yahoo! discussion list set up. It may be not as fancy as the Paizo boards, but it did the job ! 8)

I'll probably visit Draconis on Saturday. But I can't play, since I played through all 4 scenarios at Gencon.

You will regognize me as I'll be wearing my Qadira faction t-shirt!

I started a subject on the blackguard forum, feel free to stop by!

Howdy friends,

Reminding you all that Draconis starts tonight, and will last the full week-end.
Looking forward to meeting you at one (or more) of the 4 PFS games which will be hosted.

Go Cheliax !!!

I got home safe from my day at Draconis, and I had a great time. Enjoy the other two scenarios tomorrow folks!

And I've gotta say, I really appreciate how welcoming and appreciative everyone was! I'll have to get to Montreal more often. It was great to have two enthusiastic and energetic tables, and I hope to see all of you at future events!

And a big thank you to Armac for driving me there so I could run the games. It's always a pleasure to hang with you!
