"When preparing spells for the day, a wizard can leave some of these spell slots open. Later during that day, she can repeat the preparation process as often as she likes, time and circumstances permitting. During these extra sessions of preparation, the wizard can fill these unused spell slots. She cannot, however, abandon a previously prepared spell to replace it with another one or fill a slot that is empty because she has cast a spell in the meantime. That sort of preparation requires a mind fresh from rest. Like the first session of the day, this preparation takes at least 15 minutes, and it takes longer if the wizard prepares more than one-quarter of her spells."

I can not believe I have gone all these years and missed that. It only applied to wizards right? Not Cleric or Druid spell preparation?
And thanks by the way.

Here's what it says:
"A divine spellcaster selects and prepares spells ahead of time through prayer and meditation at a particular time of day. The time required to prepare spells is the same as it is for a wizard (1 hour), as is the requirement for a relatively peaceful environment. A divine spellcaster does not have to prepare all his spells at once. However, the character’s mind is considered fresh only during his or her first daily spell preparation, so a divine spellcaster cannot fill a slot that is empty because he or she has cast a spell or abandoned a previously prepared spell.Kalyth |

Ok reading over this Im still a bit confused. At first it seems to imply that Clerics cannot leave spell slots unprepared and prepare them later. Then it goes on to say.
"A divine spellcaster does not have to prepare all his spells at once."
So they can leave slots unprepared?
"However, the character’s mind is considered fresh only during his or her first daily spell preparation,...."
Seems to imply that he only has one time a day to prepare.
"....so a divine spellcaster cannot fill a slot that is empty because he or she has cast a spell or abandoned a previously prepared spell."
The fact that it states the he cannot fill a slot that is empty because he or she has cast the spell or abandoned a previously prepared spell throws me off. What about a previously unprepared spell? Is this meaning that their mind is fresh and their spell slots are restored and ready for spells to be prepared (and those can be prepared now or sometime later if not all prepared now). Alternatly, does this mean that thier mind is fresh and they may prepare spells only during this one scene?
I could see them not restating things that were already stated for wizard preparation just it could be read different ways.

My guess is that this is just for clarification purposes. It allows things like having a PrC that uses empty spell slots for special abilities. They just never did one because people only seemed to like, and therefore bought books with PrC's that were broken.

I've used this only a few times in the past. A rule of thumb years ago was 15 minutes of spell preparation/memorization per level. This discouraged wizards from leaving too many slots open, but still offered this option. Sometimes a well chosen spell can really make a scene if applied in a creative way, but players RARELY if ever invoke this clause...
