EN World offline?

July 19/09: It seems to be offline once again!

I've been having issues all morning.

Actually longer, but it's been really bad this morning.

Do you get the "this page cannot be displayed" error message or is it intermitant?

BTW, Circvs Maximvs doesn't seem to be working either.

While EN World hasn't been working all morning, I've noticed that in the past few weeks it's VEERRRY slow. Not sure if they're related, but it's made the site practically unusable for me.

It's most likely related to ENWOrld 2.0, which uses a much more advanced version of VBulletin than they were originally using. My guess is that the server's hard drive finally rebelled.

Yeah, the reason it's been slow is a MySQL issue. Micheal Morris has been trying to fix it but hasn't had much luck. He even asked for help from other EN World members.

Regardless, it appears that it's completely offline right now. Oh well.

Yeah, MM's been pushing the server really hard trying to fix it. ;-)

Is it me, or, speed issues aside, is ENWorld 2.0 *less* usable than the old page? I hate the "WOTC-style" categorization of updates.

Sorry; I realize that is a bit of a threadjack...I'll go start my own thread.

EN world 2 does seem a lot less useful. But really I have not felt welcome there in a while. The site I have enjoyed since 2000 is gone..victim of the edition wars it seems.

A lot of people have abandoned ENWorld. I recently came back after not posting there for a couple years. I'm thinking about mostly leaving again. It seems that anyone who says anything other than wonderful things about 4E is going to be attacked by somebody and the mods aren't doing much to stop it. I am somewhat encouraged by the fact that Eric Noah and some of the other pillars of the community openly support 3.5.

I only started to notice severe problems, regarding EN World 2 usablity, after the Wiki was added. When that went online, the performance dropped significantly for me.

Well thats what is driveing me away. Eric is about the only person that cant be flamed..The mods seem to only step in when someone flames the 4e folks back. Sad I used to really enjoy that site.

The new site does seem very slow and buggy..almost as bad as gleemax really.

Must be the 4E virus.

I've noticed this as well, which kind of annoys me. I keep hoping that the "edition war" thing is a temporary problem because 4th edition is so new. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

And I can honestly say I support 3.5 and the OGL. I even have my own forums dedicated to 3rd edition and OGL gaming.

That mad me laugh. They may be using the same software. Gleemax is unusable to me its to slow and very buggy, and pron to not load.
I have found many of the same issues with the new EN world. Atmosphere aside the upgrade is not really very helpful.

Well part of the issue is the one sided mods. Bashing 3e is fine, you just can't defend it or yourself without the mods stepping in on you.

I loath 4e but find it fine for others to enjoy it.B ut over there it has got to the point that You can not say anything bad at all of 4e without the threads being locked when ya counter the 4e crowd. Lets hope this to in time passes.

Dunno, I haven't gotten that feeling quite as much. There's just a handful of extremely vocal 4e fans that seem to take it personally when someone gets critical of some element of 4e. At the same time, while I'd hazard a guess to say that maybe 50-60% of the still active community switched to 4e, those same folks aren't in monolithic support of everything WotC does (like the DDI vaporware).

You might have folks like Mourn who seem to be the 4e fan-mirror to 3e's Razz, but I don't get an unwelcome vibe from the majority at all. The mods aren't all gung-ho about 4e either (Having spoken to a few in person, I know a few who are honestly dejected about how WotC has handled the transition, or are rather "meh" about the new system).

Of course, I haven't been exactly as active as I was at one time (and it's the same on all forums this year, not just Enworld, though I'm rarely if ever on Wizards anymore given the epileptic servers there and not exactly friendly CS department). So maybe I just haven't noticed a change in atmosphere that you have.

Not just you. I really, really hate the new layout.

This has not been my experience at all. I've seen several 4e-flamers slapped down for getting out of line.

This doesn't mean there aren't things that are different between the two editions and their supporters. 3e has been criticized up and down on the ENWorld boards for years since it was the current game. So any criticism of it now is old hat.
But the introduction of 4e with its announcement, marketing, and release gave some people a whole new game to gripe about. This lead to a substantial increase in griping in general, some of it quite vitriolic. I even go as far as saying there was way too much vitriol from very vocal 4e critics for a good length of time, and that contributes to the perception that the mods aren't even-handed - they HAD to smack down a lot more 4e-haters because there were so many behaving badly and they developed very short fuses. I do think this has gotten a lot better in recent weeks, though.

There have been several of us critical of 4e throughout most of this time on ENWorld who have not been, or least not significantly been, slapped down by the moderators.

Well, I'm not the sort to bash a game system. I don't like 4e at all, but I'm not going to shout it from the mountaintop. I don't poke my head into the 4e forums on EN World because I'm just not interested in 4e.

EN World will likely always have a place for 3e and older editions but, right now, the forum seems to cater to the 4e crowd. It's understandable since 4e is the "big, new dog," but it can be a little annoying.

A lot of frequent posters left long before 4e. A bunch of them went to circvsmaximvs because of the different atmosphere. But you can't attribute that to too much incivility (which is almost an art form on CM) or 4e.

CM fulfills the same role as Nutkinland before it, which is the "after-hours" bar. It's a good place to go for drunken out of control brawling, and discussions that are otherwise prohibited at ENWorld. It's not really designed for the same types of discussions as ENWorld is.

Absolutely. I've stopped visiting there since the redesign.

It may be intended to fulfill the same role as Nutkinland, but it clearly is the primary game forum of choice for a whole lot of CM regulars. There's nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that a good many familiar posters from ENWorld were already pretty much gone, and not as a recent change.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

The main thing I've been getting from EN World in 2008 was the front page news. With 2.0 there seems to be a lot less of it, which is my biggest complaint about the update (well, that and it being slower than anything but Gleemax.)

Now I only check from work, since there's limited stuff I can surf the web without hiting the company firewall, and if I'm bored, I'll check EN World forums. There are still some threads I find worth reading, but too many are either pure 4E rules, which is fine, but not my cup of tea, or edition wars, which also aren't much interest (unless they're unusually funny.)

The same was true for Nutkinland before it. People tend to rotate in and out of ENWorld, depending on how involved they happen to be with what's going on in the world of gaming at any given time. Posting at sites like CM and Nutkinland tend to be a little more constant because people aren't just discussing the academics of gaming, they're forming friendships and rivalries while otherwise acting like clowns. They aren't the types of places to take seriously. Many have found that they like people at ENWorld while despising them at CM. It's a weird dichotomy that seems to be shared with the MMO counterparts out there.

It's kind of the polar opposite of this site in that respect, though the anti-4E sentiment at Paizo.com is understandable, since Pathfinder players naturally gravitate here.

I found that ENWorld had intermittent technical issues. I find myself going there less and less since they've remodeled, however, simply because the layout is so inconvenient now.

This is true, and given my feelings on 4E, I sometimes have to catch myself before hitting the submit button to stop from feeding into it.... too much.

I couldn't agree more. I thought that the front page news was really useful before the upgrade, but since they instituted the changes, I find it to be the exact opposite. I've even gotten the feeling that some companies have ceased posting news items to the front page.

EN World is now working but it is REALLY slow.

FYI... one of the routers blew up.

It seems to be offline again.

Anyone else having trouble getting to EN World today and late yesterday?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

The whole day. I was going to start a thread looking for info when I spotted this one :)

Haven't heard anything yet, nothing on the Livejournal page either, and CM is also down. Those servers must be out of scooby snacks again :(

Have they gone out of business?

I highly doubt that.

Yes both ENworld and Circvs Maximvs appear to be offline.

Okay, so it's not just me.

Still down! I hope something isn't seriously wrong.
