For newbies: a character creation guide

Alpha Release 3 General Discussion

It would be a great idea if Pathfinder have a guid to create characters : how to choose race, wich class, why, wich feat, wich skill...

For new players it's very important to create a nice character in "short" time.

Example :

If you want to be someone how life in forest, use bow and is very skilled, do a Ranger, human or elf. This feat is recomended (....), and this skill...

I think you may be underestimating how much space would be required by a decent chargen guide.

Perhaps just a .pdf full of sample characters? It should be easy enough to assemble the characters and get some fluff text written up about each example: the only problem is artwork.

Any new character to the game should sit down and read the race and class section of the PHB. Both chapters, completely.

This will give them a good idea of the base options that are available.

A "Guide" like you speak of could simply consist of the fluff portions of those chapters. (i.e. leave out the mechanics but just have 'em read the descriptions of each).

I want to see a Pathfinder Basic Game box, like 3.0 had. :)

I like that idea. A new player doesn't need to read about the 20th level monk, before even deciding to play a monk. Boiling the classes down to fluff descriptions would help avoid information overload.

Yep. Red box Pathfinder. I want that. Bad.

I'm going to assume you meant new players, not new characters...

and as a new player, I must respectfully disagree.

There is an overwhelming amount of information in those chapters, much of which is not relevant, or contradicts itself. There's a whole lot in the book which requires you to have some existing knowledge, and no decent cross-reference system.

The fluff portions, all in one place, would be very very nice.

I'm praying for a really *good* index in the beta book.

I need some help on my PC for the Pathfinder Society RPG organized play campaign. I'm not sure I've interpreted the extra build points from low stats (after racial adjustments) rules correctly. I also lowered my PC's CHA. stat by 1 to a 7. Here is my PC's stats as a level 1 Half-Orc Fighter before the using any build points:

STR.: 12, DEX.: 10, CON.: 10, INT.: 8, WIS.: 10, CHA.: 7

I think this gives me 6 extra build points, 2 from the 8 INT. & 4 from the 7 CHA. Also, I'm not quite sure of the point cost to get his INT. up to a 13.

Here is his stats after the point buy:

STR.: 17, DEX.: 14, CON.: 14, INT.: 13, WIS.: 10, CHA.: 7

I would really appreciate an offical clarification/correction.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You've got it backwards; you spend all your points first, and then apply the racial bonuses last "for free". So to get your ending stats would cost:

STR 15+2 ..(7 pts)
DEX 14 .. (5 pts)
CON 14 .. (5 pts)
INT 15-2 .. (7 pts)
WIS 10 .. (0 pts)
CHA 9-2 .. (-1 pts)

For a total of 23 pts -- too many.

OK, you're right. I looked at the Guide again and saw that I did do it in reverse order. According to the Character creation chapter this is how his stats should go before racial adjustments:

STR 15 ..(7 pts)
DEX 13 .. (3 pts)
CON 14 .. (5 pts)
INT 15 .. (7 pts)
WIS 9 .. (-1 pts)
CHA 9 .. (-1 pts)

With the 2 extra pts. from the 9 WIs. & 9 CHA. this comes out to the 20 points buy. After the Half-Orc racial adjustments these are his beginning play stats:

STR 17
DEX 13
CON 14
INT 13
WIS 9
CHA 7

I'm not missing anything am I? Thanks for the help.

Nope, that looks pretty good.
