Players: Mothman, Radavel, Patrick Curtin

Hi guys! I'm looking for a little input before we get rolling.

What I want to know is:
(1) Do you want to recruit any more players? I doubt any of us are going to disappear so it's an opportunity to run a small group, and if Tal's game is any judge, that's really good for dialog. Plus three of us are tightly time zoned. If you vote yes let me know how many you like.

(2) I'm thinking short campaign. Your basic 2 hour Zombie movie (could be a 6 month game - just don't know). Either you all make it to some sanctuary and do what you want (rescue loved ones, etc...) or you die trying. I think we'll feel it when we're done. We've all got a bunch of games and we also like to try new stuff so this seems like a cool idea. What you think?

(3) 2nd, 3rd, or 4th level MSRD regular dudes? (During the game you will pick up some weapon proficiencies, weapon focuses, vehicle proficiencies, and other feats for things you have been using or doing frequently - that's free stuff in addition to level advance).

One more player, yes. If Tal is game to join, then so much the better.

Short campaign, no problem.

4th level should give everyone sufficient skills and abilities to stand out and survive in a z0mbie-infested world.

Roger that.

Btw, will you be allowing magic and/or psionics into the campaign?

I'll allow psionics.

Think this is a good size, but like Radavel said one more couldn't hurt. I think a quicky run is a great idea, it would make for gripping fights (and I suggest maybe a backup character to roll out if we get unlucky) also, how do you wrap up a zombie thang? Either get eaten or fly away to an island, either or. Perhaps a goal (like a secure fort or the like) that we must travel to. Maybe NPCs along we must protect. I'd say 4th level MSRD if we are a small group, the zombies will be tough to whack.

ALSO: does damage infect us automatically per typical zombie movies? That raises the threat level.

Patrick Curtin wrote:

I'm going to start us off in Vancouver BC. I know Van and I know every major city within 600 miles of Van. Mountains, water, islands... I've visited never lived there though.... I know Seattle, too, if you head south (lived there), and I've been all over the mountains and the coast. It's pretty international so you can write up a character from just about anywhere in the world and reasonably find yourself in Vancouver.

Fly? Island? Hehe. The small coastal islands are densely wooded.

Patrick Curtin wrote:

If I tell you then where's the suspense?

Patrick Curtin wrote:

I would like some of you to have some people in the area who you care about. This is not a prerequisite... but it will give you access to added startup resources.

No pressure. Loners are ok, too.

Money won't mean much after the first few days in game, though.

All sounds good.

It might suck as far as survivability goes, but I kind of like the idea of 1st level, ‘regular joe’ type characters – no magic, no psionics, no ninjas, no special ops … on the otherhand, having a bit of kick-ass in the middle of a zombie invasion never hurts.

(1) I don't know if you already have someone available for a 4th, but I would definately be interested. Also, I am in a similar time zone as well, so that helps (Hi, Moth... Rad)! If you already have someone, no probs. Just thought I'd put my hand up. (Plus it would give me a chance to actually use my d20 Modern Books instead of just reading them and admiring them on my shelf)

(2) 4th would probably be best. 1st/2nd would be a tough slog in a normal Zombie flick. If you plan on throwing a lot of Z's at the party then sheer weight of numbers would drag them down after a while, especially with limited access to healing.

=)

Ok, maybe we can find an in-between: half way to level 3?

Also making real world people is fun, but I think you guys should try to cover each other. Being an accountant or web designer is fine, but some accountants can also hunt. I have a friend who is a veterinarian, but he also mods Cooper Minis and races on the weekend. An American PC might have learned to drive tanks or APCs while volunteering for the national guard. I teach English, but I've spent 25 years learning martial arts. Maybe you like fishing and can drive a boat. I think it would be fun to waste some points in character but still have something leftover that's useful... even a tabletop gamer may have a significant knowledge (tactics). I can even think of something useful for a chef....

As far as the psionics question, I would also like this to have the atmosphere of a real world zombie pandemic, but I'm willing to allow some weirdness as long as everyone doesn't do it. To that end, I think telepaths (mind reading, reading objects, stuff like that) don't push reality so far that it breaks, while guys who are manifesting fireballs and crackling energy shields kind of pushes it. Telepathy, incidentally, may come in really handy, because there is going to be a little more than just fighting some shambling 'undead'. So why don't we allow one player to do a psychic but the assumption of others is that such things do not actually exist. One psychic slot open, first come, first served.

In line with this reality thing, I'm taking the disease angle (28 days, I am Legend, Resident Evil), so the undead aren't really dead.

I don't see any problem with including you flash. Interested is good. Let's call it at four, then.

There are going to be a lot of zombies and they're going to be trying to eat everyone.

Without any kind of accelerated healing you guys are certainly going to have problems. You don't really need me to say this, but I'll confirm it if it's on your mind: this game is going to require a completely different kind of thinking than the usual dungeoneering.

Worried about spending a lot of time generating a PC and then having him turn into a zombie? Go here.

Ok, on to making characters:

28 point buy (d20)

2nd level, half way to 3rd... whatever that is in XPs.

One free craft at max ranks, OR one free knowledge at max ranks.

Three free ranks each in Knowledge (Popular Culture) and Drive (note: you don't need a feat for regular 4 wheeled vehicle operation, but you do for motorcycles).

Everyone has the same free feat:

  • Resist Disease: +4 on fortitude rolls to resist infection and disease. I was going to keep this secret, but all of you know you are the sort who rarely gets sick, so.... (Great Fortitude stacks with this, but that's up to you.)

Everyone has money, mobile phones, and whatever you want that is suitable to your selected profession. Don't worry about money. Hehe.

The only way you can have a gun is if you are a policeman. Hunters may also have guns but they must be kept locked. Concealed weapons are illegal except with special permits, such as those held by some security workers and private detectives. Remember, you are starting in Canada. Don't worry, there are gun shops, just not as many as you'll find in the US.

Nice. I was actually thinking of going full reality and just playing an enhanced version of myself, the one in an alternate universe that stayed in the US Army. Perhaps I was stationed in Monterey CA as a linguist when the zombies started appearing, and by the opening of the story have fought up to the Vancouver area with the group looking for a secure place to go. Thoughts?

You get to see it happen from almost the beginning, just after the US/Canadian border is closed.

Shops are still open, in fact I'm thinking you might start off in Starbuck's coffee....

<snicker> I'd have to. Even in the military I was a linguist and a journalist. I fired a rifle once a year to qualify, and most of the time they just passed you through. I'd be a zombie snacky cake without some creative editing LOL.

Hey, welcome Flash - good to have you on board!

I think even an enhanced version of myself would have a hard time surviving a zombie outbreak - except by running away a lot - so I might create more of an idealised version of myself.

If Flash and I both end up playing Aussies we can be backpacking around North America or something.

Personally I've never had occasion to fire a gun or use more than an improvised weapon in a fight in my life ... but I think my character will know how. Maybe he's done some hunting, or worked for a while as a security guard or something.

EDIT: Also, I dont have the d20 Modern books. I think I've got the srd somewhere, and I'll probably use the Pathguy thing to generate my character.

    Hey Moth,

An enhanced version of me would probably join the Zombies snacking (I didn't say on what).

I've fired a pellet gun like 15 years ago but have played alot of Virtua Cop/House of the Dead/Time Cop. =) I have also fired a bow before (most recently on my honeymoon 5 years ago). I'm pretty average with a bow, but not bad.

I actually don't mind the idea of playing the Aussie Backpackers travelling around North America together. If you're happy with that then lets do it.

I am a little rusty with d20 Modern (it's been a while since I've read it), so it'll probably take me at least until mid-week to get a character made.

Man I am looking forward to this... thanks Kruel!

EDIT: How would a female Aussie Backpacker go. She has done some Security work back home, but has decided to take some time off to travel around North America with her friend xMxOxTxHxMxAxNx. (Doesn't mean that you have to be a female by the way Moth).
By generic movie casting, 1 female, 1 African American, 1 tough guy and 1 geek should be a good party! lol ;)

Haven’t stated my guy yet, but I think I’ll use this name and avatar.

The character concept is developing … I think he’ll be something of a “professional” (or at least prolific) traveller / backpacker and into some sort of fringe or extreme sport; maybe parkour, free running, BASE jumping, something like that. Whether he’ll be best served as a Fast, Strong or Tough hero I’ll need to refresh my familiarity with those classes. He’ll most likely use the Adventurer background / profession.

My Character's name is Guilliermo Leon, M.D. Graduated top of his class.

But his successful present hides a very violent past. His family was killed by the military on suspicion of being rebel symphatizers. Rendered catatonic by the experience, Leon is nursed back to health by the good fathers of the Jesuit Order and Leon would have probably taken the priest's robes were it not for the fact that the military got wind of his survival and were keen on liquidating him. So the priests sent him abroad out of the reach of the military.

Leon has a scar on the left side of his face running from the temple to his jaw, a remembrance from his past.

He runs a clinic for the poor in Vancouver.

He vows that never again will power mad monsters kill with impunity while he draws breath. To his mind, those who killed his family are monsters.

Rad, I started writing something, then I decided it would be more interesting for you if I wait.

It's good for me... his motivations are very apt for the plotting I've done so far.

    Dark Archive

I thought you'd like it. Guilliermo hails from the province of Zamboanga del Sur in the island of Mindanao. His parents are actually not symphatizers. The rebels insisted that they help at the point of their assault rifles.

Good and evil get pretty mixed up down there.

Got my avatar up, not much else. I figure that I had stayed in the Army for a second tour, then been kept in by the current unpleasantness. (as many of my Arabic-linguist friends have by the pernicious stoploss policy). I was vacationing in Vancouver, visiting my aunt Terri (who indeed once lived there at one point before returning to Cape Breton) when the zombie plauge began.

Gotta say this avatar has the perfect expression! Looks like he is staring at a pack of zombies shuffling in at him doesn't it?
