Overrun Combat Maneuver

Combat & Magic

Liberty's Edge

I'm trying to understand this Maneuver and it's purpose. Thus far i'm not seeing it, unless you have the Feat. I mean if you choose to do a Overrun you must declare it. The "badguy" then get's an AO (if you don't have the Feat) then can still choose to move out of the way.

So my issue is this...What's the point? Why would I as a player choose to do this if I don't have Feat. So I move, great, but the "badguy" get's an AO against me. I might as well just run over there and attack, or take the "long" road.

Do the rest of you see it this way?
Am I just missunderstanding this Maneuver?
Am I not understanding it's purpose/design?
Or do you just understand it differently?

Scarab Sages

I used this feat in playtesting.

Our first level characters were trapped in a room by a goblin vampire (don't ask). He was blocking the door and fighting him was just getting us killed. The smart choice was to run away. But he was in the way. So my dwarven wizard overran. Fortunately the roll went well and I was out of there.

But it was useful and lifesaving.

Overrun is also very useful if the big bad mage is protected by a line of flunkies. While the mage blasts away at you with spells, the flunkies only job is to block your access, and if they do damage to you, tis a nice bonus.

Overrun would allow you to run over a flunky, to get into melee range of the mage.

Or, you are chasing a thief who just stole xxxx from you. Overrun allows you to bull thru the crowd, or the thief's friends who just happen to accidentally like block the path.

It can be used in all kinds of situation. The AoO that you take, is not normally from the target you want, and usually, you are willing to take the hit to do....

Liberty's Edge

OK, I got it now. When I initially read it I was in a narrow mind aspect of it's uses. Was thinking of that wide open area with nothing there but the adversary.

Thanks.
