All Shoanti women do this as well as the men, right? Except for elders and other non-combatants?
I understand why they do so and I have to agree that it's the smartest thing to do(my DM told me there were hints the Osirions do the same thing but for hygiene and religious reasons instead like the Ancient Egyptians), but do all the Shoanti tribes and tribesmen go uniformly completely bald? Do any ever keep any of their hair for a topknot or mohawk or something similar? I know that would defeat the entire purpose of taking off their hair to begin with, but even barbarians sometimes feel like being special and different sometimes, right? ;)
I'm just wondering if there's any additional reason for my Shoanti barbarian to look the way she looks that I could put into her backstory. I had the appearance nearly set in stone in my head before her background, which doesn't happen that often.
Or she might just get a tattoo.

I have a Shoanti fighter; he's bald but has no tat's. He was kindova outcast so he couldn't get any tats.
I was thinking about having him grow his hair to be a reblel, but hair's so scratchy. The other Shoanti wouldn't LET him get tat's because his dad threw his mother out, so he was an outcast.
That's something I need to check on too, tribal approval for tattoos. Would they disapprove of a Shoanti getting foreign designs while away from the Plateau?

IIRC, the Shoanti are real tradional. Ergo, tats from other cultures would probably be frowned upon. Hmm....maybe Hudak will get some...

I certainly dont see why a Shoanti might not decide to go cue-ball; every culture has oddballs who dont conform. Shamans ignore the meme; why not have her take a level of druid, with practiced spellcaster, and a companion-less variant?
I was kind of thinking about that for a while, but with a level of Sorcerer instead. The other caster classes just didn't "fit" for her. I might still do it.
There's more about the Shoanti in Pathfinder 10, but as a general rule, bald is the way to go for most Shoanti. Younger Shoanti who still have to make a name for themselves or find a mate or are rebellious or the like don't shave their heads, if I remember correctly...
Well, rebel she is! Thanks for the info, I'm looking forward to #10(at least what I'll be able to read in it).
Aurra Sing and Diablo 2 sold me on the mostly-bald w/ topknot look.

I believe that I read somewhere that the elders might grow out their hair.

This is also true. It's mostly a warrior thing. And as many Shoanti are is situations where they might have to fight to survive every day--or are simply proud of their traditions--most shave their head. The elderly (and others James noted) aren't so much in this position anymore, so some grow it out while others keep shaving till the day they keel over.

Also, if you read the pathfinder journal in #7(I think) when Eando is with one of the Shoanti tribes, they shave him as well as part of their tradition was to out run a wildfire(which are frequent on the plateau) and with the flames already close enough to breath down your neck having a full head of hair is just asking to have it burst into flames.
I would imagine these cosmetic traditions come from all sorts of places.
