Racial weapon familiarity for half-breeds: (pages 4 to 7)

Liberty's Edge

Three half-brothers, Sylutan the half-elf, Jhengi the human and Girkol the half-orc grow up together raised by Reginald, their human father, a former mercenary. Despite Reginald's best efforts, Sylutan doesn't know how to hold a dagger. Jhengi is less of a problem, as he's picked up enough to use a longsword effectively. Girkol's is Reginald's pride, as he handles greataxes and falchions with ease. When asked about the differences between his sons, who haven't decided yet on what they do in life, Reginald mutters something about genetic racial memory working better for half-orcs than for half-elves.

The situation strikes me as very odd.

What is the reason for the difference between the playable half-breeds? Shouldn't they all get the weapon proficiency of their non-human parent? Or, in order to reflect their human-based versatility, they should all be proficient in any one martial weapon, just like humans.

I'm also struggling with the fact that half-orcs can treat "orc" wepons as martial weapons, whereas half-elves know nothing about bows and rapiers.

There is also something disquieting about half-orc commoners being comfortable with greataxes and falchions. Much better than torches and pitchforks. :-)

Well in the description chapter in the PHB there was a whole section on altering first level attributes to match character history, most people seem to have missed reading it. If a specific character history calls for a character to not know how to weild something simple, don't let them weild it. The base assumption is that half-elves are rasied by humans, and half-orcs by orcs in Golarion.

That's an interesting point. However, I can't quite see myself denying a half-orc player the falchion proficiency on that basis. And since I'm using several campaign settings, I'd rather work with a setting-neutral ruleset.

Well see that's the great thing they are interchangable, if a half orc was raised among humans give him one free, if he was raised by dwarves (hey anything could happen) give him dwarven weapons.

it all goes back to if it ain't broke don't fix it, since the rules exist and recomend changing, then it ain't broke
