Skill "Points" for Classes

Skills & Feats

Liberty's Edge

Maybe this has been brought up before, maybe not. If it has sorry to repeat. As far as skill "points" are concerned I like the new system, I am not finding it hard to understand at all.

What my issue is and has ALWAYS been ever since 3.0...why does the Wizard get like the lowest amount of skill points to spend?? I understand his limited skills to choose from...I mean in theory he is a bookworm...Geek if you will. He enjoys the challenges of the mind, the power of the mind, the focus etc. Hence his primary attribute is Int. And yet he gets the least amount of Skill points.

Is there a reason for this i'm just not understanding?

I mean in theory I can make a Rogue and a Wizard with the same intel and as far as Knowledge skills the Rogue could DOMINATE my Wizard who is supposed to be dedicated to knowledge.

Thoughts??

Check the Please Kill 2 Skills Per Level thread, especially towards the end.

I think it's in part because they're supposed to be quite smart and thus get a lot of skill points, anyway. Giving them a higher amount of skill points in addition to the int might mean that they're skill monkeys that surpass rangers and bards and rival rogues.

KaeYoss is dead on. If you want properly bookworm wizards, just add a "Versatile Sage" feat (analogous to the bard's "Versatile Performer"). Then wizards get, essentially, an extra Knowledge skill per point of Int bonus (at the cost of 1 feat), but they can't go and pick up Tumble or Climb or whatever with those extra points.

I could see Open Minded being changed so that it grants one extra skill rank per level, usable however you see fit.

+1 for the OpenMinded rewrite. Did the same myself.
As for wizards and skill points, I really think the bonus points from INT should only be usable for Knowledge/Craft/Profession skills FOR EVERY CLASS.
While increasing some classes skill points, this would result in more well-rounded characters.

Oooo. That's systematic. I like that a lot better than some of the this-class-only ideas. High Int = higher knowledge for all. Low Int? Could penalties apply the same way? Probably not. Just a general learning deficit.

How hard would this be for backwards compatibility? I imagine +1 and maybe +2 bonuses are pretty common among NPCs. Do you think most already have ranks in Knowledge, Craft or Profession? I guess if you assume NPCs max out skills a +1 bonus = 1 max'ed out skill so if they don't have a Knowledge, drop one skill and add a K/C/P. Not bad.

Some people would scream that you are eliminating their choice.

And they'd be right!

So the smart fighter can't jump, intimidate and ride?

The cleric can't concentrate/do spellcraft, heal and be diplomatic?

Let skill points be skill points.

Well, but why should the fighter (or any character) have more physical skills only because he is smart?!
Just makes no sense.

But I know, Backward Comp. would suffer, so it won't be used anyhow.

Little sense I could agree to. But not no sense.

It really is the best option. What else could there be? No bonus for anything? Don't like it. Split bonus skill points among high ability scores? Like high Str gives you extra skill points you can use for jump, climb, and the like, dex giving acrobatics or stealth, and so on? That would get really messy.
