@Yossarian Your "Sandpoint Gamesmaster Notes" is getting better all the time. I go away for a week or two , start thinking of making my own list of houses and services in Sandpoint, I come back to check the forum and - wow - you've beaten me to it. I am much indebted to your hard work.


@Yossarian - are you using iBooks Author? There is so much potential for interactive ebooks of this nature for GMs... I've been toying withthe idea for ages. Just waiting for a decent interactive map widget to appear....

No, just Apple Pages. But that sounds interesting! What sort of functionality did you have in mind for an 'interactive map widget'?


The current interactive image widget has labels that show all the time.

I want a map that has icons on it which, when touched, reveal a pop-up.
Also the map needs to go full-screen and be zoomable.
So I can have the equivalent of a battle-map or dungeon/encounter guide with pop-up descriptions of rooms/locations and npcs/beasts.

I can then include an annotated map of Sandpoint etc. And have detailed area maps for the encounters with mini-stat blocks popping up for NPC and encounter scenarios....

Not much to ask for!

Something like this could be done in HTML5 but I don't have the knowledge.

I don't know if you are playing online or live, but Roll20 could do pretty much all of this for you, and you could use the free signup.

It depends. Are you using roll20 just for yourself? Or are you going to let other players view the map at the same time? With the growth in use of tablet computers and widespread laptop availability, wireless internet access can often let all the players log onto the same site, even though most of you are in the same room.

Roll20 is browser-based, so it cannot be used offline. You would need two PCs with an internet connection. One for the GM and one for the players that was attached to a display they can all view. You manipulate the map from the GM side, so the players only see what you want them to see on their side.


Technically, if you initially have the browser page open in an internet zone, you can keep the browser window open outside the Internet. You won't be able to edit pages and have the edits keep. But in theory you might still be able to use it to show what parts of the maps can be seen, and to move icons around. (The die-rolling feature probably wouldn't work.)

The benefits truly come when players can see where things and encounters are as well.


As others have said it's an online virtual desktop so you would need an internet connection. However I can see options where you could use it with a live game.

Just use it for yourself where you can put loads of notes over it and use a physical map for the players.

If you want the players to access the map as well you could bring the map up on a large TV or monitor, You would need a second pc for this though so the projected map is logged on as a player.

You can use it like an online session with each player using a laptop, you could move the online tokens for your players so they don't have to mess with tech, or, as a friend of mine did you could set up a projector to point directly down at your playing surface and assuming you got the projection ratio correct, you could just put physical minis down.

So though it is primarily for ppl like me that have to distance play there are ways to adapt it to live play and do the things you want.


I've not looked at the service but, could you not fire up another browser and then move that browser screen to a projector for the player view?

Yossarian, I love your illustrated NPC list. I think it would be even better if they were listed according to their placement in sandpoint, rather than alphabetically. If you can see at a glance whom you are going to meet at the cathedral (for instance), it might make ones job as a DM easier.

I use hero labs and I love it. It totally speeds up game play. Some one has already imported all of the monsters into hero labs so it's fairly easy to get started with

Scarab Sages

Combat Manager doesn't do maps, but it does damn near everything else. I absolutely adore it, and it's easy to add custom monsters, or advance existing ones.

Thanks! I thought about that but plenty of the NPCs show up in multiple places. What i've done is have some small portraits for the key places where my players like to go. Should add a few more really, although now i'm busy mostly with a second document that details the villages between sandpoint and magnimar (not based on paizo NPCs).

Yes, the NPCs can show up all over the place. I must admit I have some trouble remembering the names, so I would look them up in their original place entry. Maybe I just restructure it for my usage, if I get around to that. Keep up the great work! I admire folks that have the perseverance to get stuff like this done, even more so with the details you come up with.

I'm not sure if this is what you are working on, but when I ran this adventure I made up an encounter chart for the town, basically since the town has 50 or so locations I just rolled a 1d50 and had the person from that location cross paths with the players, it was alot of fun.

I would of course add an extra few entry like.

1-50 As per Town Locations
51. 1d4 Adventurers
52. 1d8+1 Rangers of Fort Rannick
53. 1d4+1 Varissians
54. 1d3-1 Shoanti Natives

I am running Skinsaw Murders and I was looking for maps of the Seven's Sawmill and found nothing. So I decided to make my own maps. When I was almost finishing I discovered the Dom C's topic and had to steal some of his ideas (specially the log splitters). Anyway, here's my contribution:

Seven's Sawmill - Undermill

Yep. I blew it up for printing and it looks just fine, even in B&W.

But I have low standards (which is to say, I'm cheap). So I can totally understand the urge to make better maps. I just thought you meant you couldn't find the ones that did exist. :)

Not trying to take away from something that's really well put together and useful, (and I'll certainly be using for my game) but those things jumped out at me.

I think I can answer this, at least based on the material that I provided: The nationalities/origins of the NPCs and their stats were pulled from the excellent HeroLab Community Bestiary files for HeroLab. I wish I could tell you who was diligent enough to stat up each and every NPC from the adventure path in HeroLab, but that unknown saint is responsible for the info in my reference docs.

Yossarian, I wanted to express my thanks and admiration for the work you've put up in this thread. I've made extensive use of the maps and other pdfs you've provided in my own game. I'm glad you found my simple references worthy of being the raw grist for your mill of excellence ;-)

I know there's a ton of good stuff in here, but the thread's so long, and some of the 5 year old links are broken, so finding stuff could be tough. My group's first playing session will be Monday, and I haven't even finished reading Burnt Offerings yet (I really want to read the whole campaign before we get to far in). Is there any stuff in this thread I should be aware of for my first couple of sessions?

Does anyone have a map for the Die Dog Die encounter at the north gate? I'm trying to draw my maps today for use when we start tomorrow, and I'm hoping to get through the whole goblin raid in the first session. We may still be finishing character building/back stories for the first hour or two, and I don't know how much they'll get into RPing the Swallowtail Festival before the goblins arrive, so we may not even get that far in the first session, but we'll see.


That one may be dead because it's a published map, and you can buy the PDF of the flip mat. Just speculating. I purchased the flip mat, and it worked well.

I've got self-made maptools files for Ven's basement, the Barrett house, and a Boar Hunt location. Files can be found here.

I know the town square is available as a published map to buy, but I decided not to buy it, more because I don't trust Paizo to get it here in time than because of the price. Given the problems they've been having fulfilling subscriptions the last few weeks, I don't trust them to ship me anything else until I know that mess is cleared up. But that map is shown in the book, so I can just draw it on a blank grid map based on what I see there.

But the one I'm talking about is for the third fight against the goblins, that takes place at the north gate. Without a map in the book to work with, I pretty much have to just guess what it's supposed to look like, which is why I'm looking for help.

While we're on the subject, are there other published maps that go with later parts of this adventure path? I'm still reading Burnt Offerings, so it'll take at least a week before I read far enough to find out what other maps I need. Given the lead time in mail ordering them, any info I could find out in advance would be helpful, so I can order stuff now to use in 3+ weeks.


Oh, look at that! The flip mat has the Northern battle on the opposite side, so I never realized that there was no map in the AP!

If you look at the full map of Sandpoint, you get the basic layout (the flip mat was actually just a zoomed in version of this spot with some detail added in). The wall goes from SE to NW diagonally, and there is one house nearby. The flip mat had a small bush at the corner (for the goblins to hide in), and some barrels and boxes to the side for Aldern to hide behind. If you do an image search for flip-map town square, you will see some sample images. Also, the flip mat is available as a PDF if you were worried about arrival time.

I believe a large reason why there is no map of that encounter, is that it is SO generic, you can/could use any intersection map and place a city wall on one edge of the encounter.

I guess you can alter the general location of the encounter, it doesn't have to be right by the gate.

Yeah. This looks more like where the Swallowtail Festival is supposed to be going on according to the town map. (Which, honestly, that little square on the town map doesn't look large enough to the place for a Festival.)


Actually, that map that Gustavo provided a link to is really good - I wish I'd had that when I ran the Die, Dog, Die encounter. It's supposed to take place north of the cathedral square, just east of the White Deer - which is the large building right at the top of Gustavo's map. Ideally, for me, the map would show a little bit more of that building and a bit less of the cathedral square, but it's still fine to use as is. I'd place the encounter in that open area just to the south-east of the inn, where Cliff Street comes across to join Church Street.

NOTES
I tried to extrapolate back from the later version of him as much as possible. That's why, for example, I've used three of his favoured class bonuses as extra hp (assuming that aristocrat is his favoured class). I've deliberately left out all the rogue elements of the character - this is simply a smooth-talking aristocrat who does his best to keep out of harm's way. His low Constitution score also contributes to his desire to avoid fights unless he has the upper hand (preferably through the assistance of the PCs). I've made his gear appropriate for an NPC of his level - though you could argue that he would have more. Thanks to RuyanVe who (in another thread) inspired me to do this, and some of whose ideas I stole (such as giving Aldern a sword cane).

Actually, Kalshane is right, that map is the location of the initial combat. If you look at the Town Square flip mat, the grey building with the steps is the western entrance to the cathedral, which is the same on Gustavo’s map.

But either way, you are correct in that it is a great map and is highly appreciated. It works well for those who don’t have/don’t want to buy the flip mat or want to use actual props for the tents, food carts, podium, etc.

Oh yes, I'm well aware that the map shows the cathedral square where the Initial Assault and Goblin Pyros encounters take place - I refer to that in my earlier post, in fact. But it's an extension of the Town Square flip mat map northwards, to include the street that leads up the the White Deer, where the Die, Dog, Die encounter takes place. That's what makes it useful, in my opinion.
