One thing I really like about the CMB is that having one mechanic for a variety of maneuvers makes it easier to think through new or unusual maneuvers. In a playtest group, the dwarven fighter decided he wanted to take unseat the goblin batrider. The problem was that the rider was mounted. Should he use bullrush (to tackle the goblin) or overrun (to overrun the bat) or both? It was easy enough to come up with this:

UNSEAT RIDER
As a standard action, you can attempt to unseat a mounted foe. If you do not have improved bullrush, unseating the foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the foe. If you do not have improved overrun, unseating the foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the mount. The DC for this maneuver is the mounted foe's CMB plus the size modifier for the mount. If your attack is successful, the foe is unseated.

Does this sound reasonable and not too awkward as a combat maneuver?
Is it sound?

Taking a 3rd level fighter with 16 strength off a horse would be DC22. Taking her off a rhino would be the same. Taking her off a gargantuan dragon would only be DC 25.

The Player's Handbook has rules for pulling characters out of saddles on page 159, under Tripping a Mounted Opponent.

But I do like the idea idea of adding new combat maneuvers. Or, even better, adding some version of this rule: "When in doubt, just say it's a combat maneuver."

Want to ride an angry dragon? "Just say it's a combat maneuver."
Dump acid in someone's bag of holding? "Combat maneuver."
Stake a pinned vampire? "Yep, you guessed it. Combat maneuver."

Come to think of it, that one rule would cover quite a lot of fertile ground.

Well I'm sure I've read it, I completely forgot and would never have thought of looking under 'trip' for what the player described as a flying tackle.

Me too. I can remember the mechanic and make up the adjustments on the fly when I can't.

I think that the simpler you make a mechanic, the more uses the players will find for it. In the end, the game will be just as complex but with a wider range of options purchased for the same complexity.

I strongly endorse this idea.

perhaps give a bit of a penalty to really exotic or tricky moves, but otherwise it does cover a lot of unusual moves and actions.
