Arcane Strike (pg 34) stacking with SRD 1st Lvl Spell 'Magic Weapon'?

Combat & Magic

I'm starting my formal playtest group tomorrow. Tonight I was assisting with a final character creation and going over the campaign world, and this question came up in conversation.

Would the 1st level spell Magic Weapon (as in the PHB) stack with the feat Arcane Strike on page 34?

Since they do very much the same thing, I am inclined to say no, but I invite comment (or if I'm lucky, maybe Jason will comment himself).

This prompts a follow-up question, since Magic Weapon does not stack with the to-hit bonus of a Master Work Weapon, should Arcane Strike likewise not stack with the to-hit bonus on a Master Work?

The Arcane Strike bonus is untyped; therefore, as written, the damage bonus would stack ni both contexts. It wouldn't stack in terms of the weapon being considered magical - it either is or it isn't - but otherwise, there's no overlap. It's more like Point Blank Shot than a magical enhancement, as written.

Forgive me.. I am guilty of not reading all the message boards, it's going a little too quickly for me to follow. I'm looking to adjust things with each release.

Having said that, I understand what you've said.. but I don't know undertand the reference you've based it upon. Can you explain what you mean by it's "Untyped"? Err.. can you give me an example of something that is 'typed'?

I've looked over the Feat Chapter and nothing is jumping out at me to explain this.. Sorry (not trying to be dense) and thanks!

A typed bonus would be something like magic weapon which also gives a bonus to damage, it's type is enhancement.

"Magic weapon gives a weapon a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls."

Bless is another spell that gives a bonus to damage, but the type of bonus is morale in this case.

"Each ally gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects."

In almost every case bonuses of the same type do not stack with each other.

If an ability doesn't name the type of bonus it is assumed to be "untyped" and stacks will all other "untyped" bonuses.

This link might be more helpful, just look under Stacking Effects. (You might need to scroll up a little bit.)

There are some exceptions to these rules though, but overall I think this is correct.

I really hope I'm saying this right.

Ah!

Okay.. Yeah, this makes sense, or rather I see where the rationale and the basis of the previous answer comes from. Thank you very much.

I just wanted to add that sometimes I'm behind the curve because I'm fairly new to 3.5, and then to add Pathfinder RPG...

::shrug::

Sometimes I need a tutor. :) Fortunately my players don't.
