Starting Occuption / Background

Races & Classes

Any thoughts to porting in the d20 Modern/Future starting occupation/background mechanic? I've been using for a couple of years in my D&D games and it seems to be pretty popular. It allows the players to make some nice customization that works for both skills and a bonus feat, as well as add backstory.

Thoughts?

wouldnt mind seeing how ya fit it in if ya wouldnt mind posting it myself.

The first Pathfinder adventure already gives a Background feat, and other campaign settings do the same. I like them too to give more starting flavor.

Maybe they could roll Background feats in with some of the cultural racial abilities, like the dwarven +1 to hit against orcs? Then the standard racial abilities can be stripped down to just the inherent race abilities like stats, keen senses, special vision, etc.

Liberty's Edge

I really like the idea of a free background feat at 1st level. In my old Forgotten Realms campaign, I let player's have a Regional feat or Racial feat for free; it didn't break anything! They just had to anticipated that the NPCs might have the same bonus.

The plus side of a "starting occupation" system, such as D20 Modern did, is that certain skills could become permanent class skills regardless of your character's starting class, just by picking the right Starting Occupation. Heck, I think even some feats were given as bonus depending on Starting Occupation!
