Absolutely fantastic, guys. Looking forward to watching this develop.

I... speechless. Ok, i had resolved not to shout out some kind of "Whoot" when i came across the announcement, but i could not fully contain myself. So here goes:

I'll definitely go and look over your rules with a fine-toothed comb. ;) I've got 9 years experience with a pretty viscous rules lawyer and this should be good.

Also, i will try and convert my home game to the alpha, and am gathering players for an online game (likely on as i write this.

Still a little speechless, but i can just say this is my personally favored outcome. Thank you!

Thank you can look forward to seeing some of those nifty subscription tags next to my name in the near future.

Silver Crusade

Just downloaded & skimmed the copy & I like what I see.

I would have been happy either way (stay 3.5 or go 4.0) but seeing this, I'm glad Paizo decided to do their own & use the money they would have thrown Wizards way for the 4.0 rights & use it to further develop what is becoming my all-time favorite setting.

I just burnt the pdf to a cd, gonna take it up the print place tomorrow & get a print out, so I can read it away from the computer!!

Congratulations Paizo! I am SO excited by this decision!

I'm sure that 4E will be a decent game, but truth is they need to take the D&D title off of the product. This is no longer D&D, but more akin to EVERQUEST, WORLD OF WARCRAFT, or any other fantasy MMORPG out there with limited scope and forced roles. Why does a paladin have to be a Divine Defender? Why do I need to fall into a role at all? I feel that these clique-like roles are going to be more limiting to the development of good role-play than character alignments ever were.

As a charter subscriber, I have continued to be entranced and amazed by the Pathfinder line. These are STORIES! This is what Role-playing is about!

I'm so excited, and I am happy to throw in my money NOW to support the Pathfinder RPG (orders already placed)! My kids and I are all downloading copies now and we will start playing immediately!

Thank you for giving us an option!

I just would like to congratulate you for this brave move! I love the news! Thank you for keeping doing what is IMHO the best incarnation and spirit of the D&D game.

Took a quick look over the rules and my initial impression is overwhelmingly positive- everything from the unnatural beauty of the Elves to the three tier experience track has me psyched.
I was considering handing over my spare 3.5 PHB for the Exalted 2.0 Ruleset, but this has changed my mind- thank you.

I'm simply ECSTATIC!!!! Yay, Paizo!

I am very happy.

This is probably the most exciting news I have seen in the hobby in the last year.

Paizo until the end.

¡¡Congratulations!! This is a great new for me and for my players ¡Thanks for making me happy!

Thank you so very much Paizo for staying with 3e, you have made many in the D&D gaming community happy this day. This was something I honestly never thought I would see happen. Now that it has though, I intend to start buying all the Pathfinder products beginning immediately.

Again thanks for listening and may your company continue to prosper

I was feeling a bit left in the cold there. Necromancer is going 4E all out as I understand it. I really want to stick with 3.5E and looks like this is the place for me! And the thought of fixing the parts of 3.5E tha dont work it just fabulous....I just have to sit out and get a hold of myself. I am just overwhelmed with joy!!

Thank you Paizo!

Liberty's Edge

I, for one, do not welcome this new. I admit that I'm disappointed that Pathfinder will stay 3.5. Nonetheless, I've been really impressed with the Pathfinder adventures that I will continue my subscription and adapt the material for 4th edition. After all, it's the imagination of the writers and the excellent quality of the books that makes it special, not the game mechanics. And as far as I can see, only major NPCs will need an upgrade.

Keep up the good work, your adventures rock!

Thanks, Zorg! I really appreciate you sticking with us!

In light of all that is bantered about on the subject of 4E; be it for or against, yatta, yatta, yatta; what a bold move. I am going to buy all the bokks as they are released. Now hurry, hurry, hurry.

By the way, I have never purchased or looked at the Pathfinder series. I am going now to look for and purchase one now to add to my Judges Guild, Wilderlands of High Fantasy campaign setting. You won a valuable customer in me indeed!

I am absolutely over the moon with the direction you have chosen to head in.

I can now safely know that the Path-finder campaign world and adventure paths will keep me and my fellow players amused for years to come.

I'll be asking them all to download and read the Alpha release as soon as possible.

Good work in giving us players who don't want to convert to 4.0 an avenue to continue our adventures.

*must resist urge to do a silly happy dance*

Congratulations Paizo! I took a quick look over the rules and my initial impression is positive. Fine work.

I sure hope this works out for you guys. I said it in all the threads where you asked our opinion, and I'm sticking to it. I am a guaranteed sale for this new project of yours. Go Paizo!

Go Paizo!

You sure showed some intestinal fortitude! I am so glad that you've made the decision to continue support of a game that is my primary pastime. My gaming group and myself had already decided to stick with 3.5 as we've all got too much invested in it to just toss it for a questionable rules set. Next weekend, I begin DMing RotRL, and so far I plan on following with CotCR.

The idea of OPEN playtesting, rather than relying on hand-picked fanboys, is equally impressive. I'm not bashing WotC. I just don't like how the change over is being handled and I am not enthusiastic about the new game previews.

Congratulations on Pathfinder RPG, guys! I wish you the best with it. As for me, I just recently became a fan of Paizo with RotRL. But with this decision, I have become and will continue to be a loyal customer.

Three Cheers!

...and with this announcement, I have decided to become a SUPERSCRIBER! I just had to make a post with the new tag.

Thanks for listening to everyone on the boards Erik and Co...

Thank _you_ for subscribing! That really is the best way to show your support, and it means the world to us.

Well, this news has made both my household and my gaming group much happier. We were likely to end our subscriptions if Paizo went to 4e fully but now we can continue happily.

I have fully read the PDF and while I certainly might have a few suggestions when I'm less tired, I am very impressed.

Great job Paizo. I appreciate both your team's abilities and your commitment to making great product. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do.

I’ll admit it: I’m not a fan of Pathfinder. I wasn’t wowed by the magazines they way I hoped I would be, I wasn’t impressed by the adventures, and I couldn’t get into the setting of Golarion.

But these rules changes?! I’m lookin’, and I’m likin’! Wow. I can’t wait for the full version!

This is the best news I've seen in months - what a great way to leverage existing 3.5 material. Looking forward to watching it grow!

Grats paizo. Im aboard for the whole ride, thanks so much.

This is an interesting business move. Wotc is giving up on 3.5 as their business model is evolving. Paizo just took the first move to secure the 3.5 loyalists (which there will a niche if not more). They are leveraging all the money spent on DnD over the last 10 years. This also protects Paizo's investment in the Pathfinder quest line. In addition, there are synergistic effects as they can sell the preexisting 3.5 materials as books or pdfs.

Basically they are protecting themselves on two fronts- continued sales of old material, and taking mind and market share on a potentially large market. Great move, and a good use of OGL resources. Wotc probably isn't upset about this, it frees them of any responsibility to 3.5 and it validates the idea of the SRD.

An elegant solution

This is a fantastic idea! It really puts the game back into the hands of the players. By soliciting feedback, you're basically collecting all the best "house rules" players can submit, and working them into the game in a sane, coherent way. Bravo!

Well done sirs. I am glad to see someone taking a chance rather than following the herd. I hope it works out well for you, and will do what I can to make it so.

Thanks Paizo, for preserving the game we thought was going to disappear forever from the worlds of "new" and "products". . .I agree with the other posters, a giant WOOOT!!! is in order!

Also thanks to Jason Buhlman; I'm so very glad his "side project" DID turn into an obsession, one which is proving already to benefit the rest of us!

I'd like to thank everyone for the show of support. It is very gratifying. This was in no way an easy decision for us, and it is wonderful to see such an outpouring of support.

There's still a lot of work to be done, of course! We've got to whip this Alpha into a Beta, and that's going to be a team effort!

Please give these rules a try and let us know what you think of them. We intend to support this game for the long haul, and we want it to be _your_ game.

As some might remember, I am pretty dissatisfied with the general direction Paizo took in module design (I would blame Paizo for the easy acceptance of Encounter-based design paradigm and the elimination of strategic-level gameplay by a large part of the player base).

Still, this PathfinderRPG Alpha pdf is fantastic. It will open the eyes of many and will truly be a worthy bearer of the Gygaxian flame!

Paizo, I salute you!

I guess this is a canny move - those that like Pathfinder can either use the new game or convert to 4E. I hope it works out. I will buy 4E but am thinking it is increasingly unlikely I will play it much (and especially the WotC adventures in that vile Delve format) so for me this works fine.

-So this means Paizo is not converting to 4E? Call me clueless, is that what happened. First post btw!!!

Thanks Erik for this opportunity. I have to say this decision of yours has led me to throw my full weight (all 86kg of it) behind you guys.

I will be posting ad hoc, to demonstate how my game embrasses the alpha. I will also be putting my two bob's in.

I pray that Paizo benefits from this, but as White Wolf has demonstrated, you do not need to be a market leader to be successful, and I feel you will be very sucessful.

Once again, thanks.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

That is the plan.

Thanks, Tony!

For a fun little hobby I do in my spare time I'm somewhat surprised at how happy this announcement made me.

Congratulations Paizo ... I'm with you all the way.

Greetings from Spain!!!

Congratulations to all the team members of Paizo.

I'm an old gamer and after 4th Edition news, we were thinking about changing our sessions to Mongoose Runequest...
But good games don't die. The D&D can be named differently, but I think that your effort is going to preserve the "true D&D essence" of the game.

Good Luck !!!

...And greetings from Italy too!
Thank you very much to all the Paizo staff for the incredible products you are publishing.
The only thing Pathfinder misses is the D&D logo on it - all the rest, the stories, the rules, the fun, the opportunities are there, in the true spirit of *the* world's best RPG.
Thank you again, you guys rock!

Well, from what I´ve seen right now, it looks very promising. My players will kill me if I would switch to Pathfinder right now, but I want to try and find some folks I can play with. I preordered the books this morning ;-)

Interesting... But... It's very much an alpha state. There's a lot of refinement ahead. A lot of the changes aren't really well thought out. Like the martial weapons for races.

The Amazing Half-Orc Rogue who can Sneak Attack with a GREAT AXE!

Still, I'll look forward for this one, to see just what I can use from it.

The Exchange

You can still sneak attack with a greataxe in 3.5, but I take your point that it would require a feat or some multiclassing.

Scarab Sages

Wow! I still intend to pick up the core books for 4th but they will need to seriously impress me now to change editions.

I don't have time to craft my own campaigns and adventures from scratch these days and Pathfinder is hands down the best I've seen in a long time, I planned to convert them to 4th edition if I changed.

I will definitely be supporting Paizo in this endeavour regardless of what edition I end up playing and I'm happy that so many people will still have exciting, innovative and quality support for the game/edition they love.

And since I'm running the adventure paths at the moment I'll have my players hammer the alpha (and beta) and let you know how it went.

Oh and in case I wasn't clear I will definitely be picking this up.

P.S. really hope this is part of the Chronicles subscription 8-)

Scarab Sages

Screw it!

Even if it's part of my subscription I need a copy for my cousin so I've preordered anyway. (Although I love my Pathfinder advantage).

At this rate I'll be may as well have my wages sent straight to you fiends at Paizo ;-)

And unlike most folks posting here this news does not make me happy. I had hoped to be able to continue using paizo's pathfinder series when my campaign switches to 4th edition. I'm not thrilled with all the changes I've heard about, but many of them have me very interested. Paizo's AP's have had me hooked from the word go, and they have thrilled me with their quaility and the stories themselves.

But I have no intention of buying a product I'll have to rewrite all the creatures for to use. I buy the AP's to save myself the work of creating the campaign form whole cloth. I am an adult with a full time job and a two year old. Time is at a premium. After the current AP ends I shall be cancelling my subscription and having to pursue advntures from other sources. Perhaps Necormancers recently announced AP, I don't know yet.

I truely do wish you had decided to go 4th, I had truely been looking forward to being a customer for many years more. But such was evidently not ment to be.

Thank you for the great games, and the AP that I will be finishing before I cancel.

-War Jack

Bravo, Paizo!

Scarab Sages

Is anyone else having problems printing this thing? Damn printer keeps trying to "flatten" the pages before printing and it just ends up freezing. Any helpful suggestions from those who are more computer savy than me?

Guess what... I started a subscription 10 min ago. :)

Thanks so much again Paizo, Im actually excited about the game and new campaign setting as well.

One request, can you add Amex to the payment method choices if possible? I prefer amex so my bills dont linger ;)

Grand Lodge

Can't wait to buy the hard back! Looking forward to seeing you at GenCon!

Wow, what a move!

I was in two minds over 4E. I'm new to D&D, and an old hack at MMOs. I figured 4E would be an easy compromise. However, I've come to realise that while pigeon-holing classes works on a computer, due to the need for automation of mechanics, I don't think it'll translate as well in such an open-ended environment.

I'm impressed by what I've read in the first alpha playtest booklet. Does Paizo have a release schedule for the subsequent parts? I want to get an alpha playtest going in as short a time as possible but I don't want to start without having all the cards for the classes.

I have to echo another poster and say that, when I saw the news this morning before coming to work, I felt so much better than I had for the last week or so. I hadn't realized how the whole debate was affecting me. I guess that's the price you pay for being passionate about something, eh? ;P

I have sent a link to the Pathfinder Announcement page to my gaming group, and I hope to convince them that we need to try and put the Alpha rules into our RotR campaign so we can 'do our part' with the project, as well as suggest some of our own ideas on mechanical improvements.

It can't be said enough - thank you for having the courage to take this game we love and take it to the next level, and still be compatible with all the stuff we have on our bookshelves. I'll do my best to add more subscriptions as my humble pay allows :)

Oh - and I noticed that nobody's said anything about Nic Logue being brought more fully into the Paizo fold. Congrats Nic - I can't wait to see what you do with the Pathfinder Society!
