I think its pretty darn funny. Especially rich how they're using the same basic premise to promote this as WotC is to promote 4x: "Your current game sucks. Ours is so much better!"

:)

Well.... I wouldn't say "war"...

It's not free either... lame.
You have to trade in your 3.5 PHB. Well, that was $30... so it ain't free.
(Not to mention I just bought the Exalted book a month ago.) :meh:

Exalted isn't a better game than D&D, it's just different. I've enjoyed reading my Exalted books as much as my D books.

I think WW is taking advantage of the D&D 'turmoil' that is going on before 4e comes out. Not a bad idea really... (I do not like the 'trade-in' part though... I plan on using my PHB along with my Exalted.)

Grand Lodge

great marketing plan. They should have released this MONTHS ago.

Honestly I wouldn't mind buying a cheap eBay or Amazon 3.5 book just for the free Exalted book. In essence get the book for much cheaper than usual.

I have not really seen much of Exalted, but I imagine it is a fine book.

*sigh* Not this again.

I'm a die hard white wolf fan. At least I consider myself one. I own almost everything they put out for werewolf, second and third edition, and I own everything for Hunter- an underrated game if I ever saw one, and I own the Vampire Third Edition book, and the Mage Second and Third Edition Books, as well as the Sorcerer's Crusade- a book I love so much I read it regularly just for fun. I even tried out their new versions of Vampire, Mage and Werewolf- hated each one, but I LOVE Scion and I think Changeling: The Lost is absolutely amazing.

That said, I CANNOT STAND the childish elitism that the company seems to thrive on nowadays. I think I've already posted about being offended by their "If you can't hack this game, go back to killing orcs" mentality in previous works (and this was usually brought up by the writers themselves regarding some of their OBVIOUSLY BROKEN rules and overpowered characters). This hobby is TOO SMALL to allow for such backstabbing and infighting.

Freehold DM is completely correct. I'm an avid fan of Dungeons and Dragons, and have lived with Exalted fans. There's nothing wrong with Exalted: It's just not my kind of game, thank you very much. I used to think that the Elitism was only the players who had changed to Exalted. Now I find out (from the above link) that this childish and myopic viewpoint is continued by the company.

Well, consider me one person who will have a hard time trying White Wolf's products from now on.

I'm with Krome and Freehold DM. Yep. Both of them. I think the idea is childish and offensive in the extreme. Therefore I'm shopping around for the absolute crappiest, most abused and unsellable copy of the 3.5 book I can so I can pick up the Exalted book for free. Heck I've used my old edition of Exalted so much that the cover fell off. I'd been planning to buy the new one to get all the nice new color art (the first edition was ugly as SIN). Now I am officially going to get my new one for free in exchange for the worst 3.5 book I can find.

These guys just drive me nuts.

Did I mention how thrilled I am with how awesome the Paizo guys are? Yeah.

I wonder what my 3.5 PHB will be worth in 10 years? (Because I sure ain't sendin' it to WW)

Depends on the condition of the book in ten years.

I've been a white wolf gamer for a long time. Still play, occasionally. And while i like the more adult-oriented design, which does not avoid thorny issues as compulsively as WotC often does, the elitism is actually good company tradition. Sadly, that is.

The game is actually pretty good (though far inferior to the truly stellar first edition). Anyone who likes epic, anime-influenced fantasy should give it a spin. Yet if you want gritty, down-to-earth, you probably should stick with 3.5

Use the system that powers your preferred setting / background. It's always been my mantra, and it will remain thus.

hehe i will play anything; got dice; will travel

same here. I've enjoyed playing WW stuff for a long time but their pissing contest BS makes me sick. I can't stand fans who do the "my game is better nyah nyah" crap and companies that do it are worse. I personally like to have a choice in games to fit whatever mood I or my group are in.

also it says "Why wait until August for the release of the Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition? Get your copy of Exalted Second Edition today, simply by turning in your D&D 3.5 Player’s Handbook.
" last I knew all 3 books were being released in june, did I miss a time frame change announcement?
The thing that really gets me as asinine is the fact that allegedly they are shredding all the PHBs they get. HUH??? That is just stupid IMHO.

That's actually a fairly common practice in the business of bookdealers. It is more a guarantee that said retailers don't try to resell the PHBs that are getting turned in. There is even an industry term for it. "Clearing" ,IIRC.

Friends don't let friends destroy their RPG books.
'nuff said.

If they were going to donate it to poor gamers or something I could see it.

No, that costs someone money and also encourages folks to use their competitor's product, which this is clearly not about. Not sure about RPG books specifically, but in the retail book industry when you return books as unsold, you actually just send back the front cover. The retailer is then not supposed to do anything but destroy the book itself.
