Jade, I assume you want him in front of you?
Depends on if he's showered today.

I've spoken with the clerics. They say they have to deal with the mentally infirm in the day-to-day OUTSIDE of the dungeon. The thieves are all dead. The magic-users are dressing up in lime green robes and practicing looking like ballistic missiles. That leaves you.

A lot less straight eighteens than I anticipated. Last time I had players "roll" their characters, the numbers had the age range of a High School Prom night.

my vote is for calling ourselves the Company of Merry Medical Mayhem, 3 dice being our badge of heraldry.

We can call our battle ballad The Attack of the Clone Clerics.

So onward to Hommlet then !

Ooooh! I think I might qualify for ranger, but I don't have my older edition books handy to confirm. Still, very happy with those rolls, thank you.

Sorry - your not even all that close. You need an intelligence of 13. Your strength is too low as well.

Mmmm... well that's a cleric- and a not very long-lived one.

Actually thats a pretty good cleric. You'll get a 10% bonus to your XP and you qualify for some nice bonus spells. Even one 17 on a 3d6 method is a very good roll ... as long as your not like me and roll it in Charisma without getting anything else worth noting...then you can play a runway model...

I think you found the way to get a reroll on that first character. As far as I can tell that character does not qualify for anything as you don't have at least a 9 in your first four stats.

Wow. Very playable. I go for fighter with an okay save versus spells. Hence the percentile strength (from AD&D DMG by EGG!). The alternative would be a battle cleric, but there are tons of clerics rolled and it would seem a waste of an 18. I hope he rolls well for HP each level. (Truth in advertising, I had my wife roll the percentile and give me the result over IM, since I don't have a d10 at work.)

Bard. AD&D PHB Bard. The one that's a fighter then a thief then a bard. Yeah!

(I knew a guy in university who owned hundreds of miniatures, and ran a campaign where every miniature had what was on their person, and each one had an index card with stats rolled (3d6, six times, in order). To pick a character, you chose a miniature, and then you found out what your class and race was).

You can't get into the thief class, dex not high enough. You'd make a pretty good mage.

Actually, with a Dexterity that low, the only class available to you is cleric. You won't have the Wisdom necessary to cast spells, though.

(And people wonder why most gamers don't play with these rules any more...)

Hmmm...well I found a website that has all the minimum ability scores for 1st edition characters. According to it the only pre req for a fighter is strength 9 and Con 7. Wisdom is too low to be a cleric.

Yeah - ways of cheating where ingenious in those days. If you had some one distract the DM just as you where going to make your roll you could slot in sixes if you where quick. Loaded Dice where all the rage as well.

Matrissa the Enchantress wrote:
What's with all these references to 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons? Doesn't anyone remember that "ADVANCED" Dungeons and Dragons came AFTER plain old "Dungeons and Dragons" (aka Basic Dungeons and Dragons)?

A friend pointed out that using 1st Ed AD&D to honour Gygax is "the right way to do it" as he was the primary editor for that version of the game (although "Basic" D&D was also based on the rules produced by Gygax and Arneson in 1974 that set was actually edited by someone else).

So, let me reassess my two characters as rolled:

First Set

Matrissa the Enchantress wrote:

STR 11 (6,4,1)

INT 12 (5,5,2)
WIS 11 (6,4,1)
DEX 6 (3,2,1) still ouch
CON 3 (1,1,1) still super-duper ouch!!!
CHA 11 (5,3,3)
Well, according to my 1st edition DMG (2nd printing), this character is a non-starter:
Gary Gygax wrote:
Furthermore, it is usually essential to the character's survival to be exceptional (with a rating of 15 or above) in no fewer than two ability characteristics.

That said, and given that the lowest minimum CON score for a non-human is 6 (for elves and half elves) this would do best as a human magic user.

second set

Matrissa the Enchantress wrote:

STR 10 (5,4,1)

INT 8 (6,1,1)
WIS 10 (5,4,1)
DEX 14 (5,4,3)
CON 13 (6,5,2)
CHA 8 (5,3,1)

Technically another non-starter, but closer. This could make a passable, but not very personable, Dwarven (adjusted abilities: CON 14, CHA 7) or Elven (adjusted: DEX 15, CON 12) Thief.

:-j(enni)

PS: In light of the subject heading for this thread, I hope it isn't completly out of line to point out that, at least in the 2nd printing of the 1st Edition DMG, the DM is given four different ways his players may roll up stats NONE of which are actually roll 3d6 six times, in order (just once):

  • Method I: Roll 4d6 six times, take the top 3 from each roll, record in the order player desires
  • Method II: Roll 3d6 twelve times, retain highest six rolls, record in the order player desires
  • Method III: For each ability, in order, roll 3d6 six times, keep the highest value rolled for each ability.
  • Method IV: Roll 3d6 six times in order sufficient times to create 12 characters, keep the set that the player finds most desireable.
I supose Method IV is the closest to the theme of this thread, so to truly honour EGG we should each roll up enough additional sets to reach 12 total and choose from that. ;-)

Roll 3d6, in order, (just once) is, however, the one method given for "Basic" D&D

Great. My wizard casts Magic Missile at the darkness.

Well then, going with Method III,

Str 17 (9,10,11,6,17,7 as placed yesterday)
Int 15 (7,7,10,7,15,10)
Wis 13 (13,10,8,8,8,11)
Dex 16 (16,9,10,13,15,12)
Con 13 (10,7,8,9,9,13)
Cha 14 (14,8,13,11,12,11)

So I’ll make that a half-orc (+1 Str, +1 Con, -2 Cha) fighter/thief, which changes the stats to:

Str 18-88%
Int 15
Wis 13
Dex 16
Con 14
Cha 12

Although I could have produced a decent elf fighter/magic-user/thief. Either way, no bonus hit points.

PS. What did you need for a cavalier-paladin?

We usually used either I or II "back in the day"...

I prefer to go a LITTLE more hardcore - roll 3d6 eight times (if using COM, 7 otherwise) order seven (or six) of them to your liking, discarding the other...

Method III seems to be the best "fit" to the thread though...
