What were the highlights of the contest for the voters, contestants and judges? We all know there were big ideas, great jokes, and helpful critiques. What do you take away from the first installment of one of the best ideas in gaming history?

Formy part, there's of course the fun and friendships. I guess I got to know Booms best of all throughout - but hey, I'm not going anywhere. Literally. It's my day off. There's also that while we awaited judgement of our magic items, I threw together four ideas to flesh out for 'Design A Country', and three of them were eerily similar to nations that were advanced by judges. Including Christine's entry (the most like mine), and Iskandria (my favorite entry of that round, even though during voting I thought Vramaire was my favorite).

As far as actual entries go, though, my absolute favorite ideas and executions were:

5: Let me be among the first to say it. Monkey goblins!

4: A god-like psionic genie who struggles with outer genius and inner chaos. Being his own worst enemy is why the Cackling Whirlwind hasn't acheived all that he ever wanted.

3. A nation of blink dogs defending their homeland, but also the civilized races coming to establish colonies, from a ruthless nation of goblinoids, who employ phase spider assassins to terrorize their lawful good enemies.

2. Iskandria, where waking up each morning is a small victory for the good guys, and the possibility of death-by-scantilly-clad-priestess is as likely as not!

1. A moving monastery, taking the gods' vengeance to an old city, while the PCs inside it try to survive the ride and the encounters within. Shifting walls, opening floors. Man, what I could do to my friends and family with that!

The Migrus Locker and Yithnai were my biggest highlights - I truly hope to see Mr. Kisko's stuff in the future.

Christine's dead god's head and chase scene were great too.

Too many to list really - all of the top contenders had some real gems to offer up.

The Exchange

In no particular order I will remember the following;

1) The Shroud of Old Souls (about to make an appearance in my table top campaign.

2) The simplicity of the Beacon of Hope, which makes me wonder if I shall ever make the top 32 in this competition.

3) Iskandria, which made me DM a pbp and I'd crawl over hot coals to play in Rob's game. (Although not a thick half-orc - if you are listening in Rob).

In general it was the way the community fed on and fed the vibe of the competition. This seemed like a win-win situation for most, if not all, of us.

Cheers

To name a few...

The threads before results of first round, lists of typical rejection results (aka. "darn, there went my chances")

"You had me at severed head."

Were-elephants and sorceress armies.

60 children in an old mill.

Special abilities of math golems and oozes.

Sled chase on a volcano.

Ghost bulettes and dwarf valkyries.

I revise my list to include:

3.5: Math golems.

Yep. Already showed up in my campaign - but after a trip to the Far Realms it became an Insanity Golem instead of a Complexity Golem.

So not only is it impossible to see without something like true seeing (or high Int), but once you can see it you wish you couldn't.

What happens if you solve a math golem???

I can't argue too much with this list, especially since the Blink Dog Nation is on it!

I was particularly fond of the Ooze Imperium also, however.

Blink Dog Nation and Ooze Imperium - definitely two of my favourite entries. Others rounding out the top five (in no particular order):
  • Onuyaka, the All Seing Eye.
  • Charts of the Shadow Voyage
  • Coin Belt of Beguiling
  • Tinnil's Stirring Rod

1. Migrus
2. Blink dog nation
3. Goblin strand of ears
4. Volcano sled chase
5. Being introduced to the PHB PSAs

I will even give it up for blink dog nation. It was definately a memorable entry! Nice work. :)

Consider yourself an honorary Brave of the Ghost Hound Kinships, Jenni!

Hooray! Maybe you're not a phase-spider-loving agent of the forces of blink-hate after all!

Ooh! As self-proclaimed Official First Lover of Blink Dog Nation (I claimed this despite the fact that other posted such love before me - not my fault I had to work that day! Slackers!),I would like an honorary brave-ship, also.

Actually, I would just like someone to run a game where I can play a blink dog ranger. Easy on the level adjustments!

Let the phase spiders and barghests flee at the baying of your pack, Ancient One -- consider yourself, and your pack, honorary Ghost Hound braves! Your defense of the blink dog nation did not go unnoticed.

Honestly have to add the judges comments especially in the 'help me tweak the rules for next round. The 'writing exercises' and Patrick Walsh's critiques on the loser items. Things that will make it into my campaigns? Volcanic Sleds, dwarven cities/monastaries, undead/fey, prison colony, phial of ebon flame, high priestess of the scaled one monkey greaves among others. Top of list? For a while (a very brief while) a chance to write for Paizo :)

Woo hoo!

Don't forget monkey pants.

I dont know if you guys remember--this was an entry Boomer didnt submit. I read it in the forums. I said, "holy cow, that is better than 3/4 of the open submissions we got." For good reasons, as it turns out--Boomer made the top 4.

I still think his monkey pants were one of the best items of the whole competition.

Someone find me a link...

This one?

Pants of the Many Monkeys

This simple pair of khaki adventuring pants contains, hidden in its many goody-sized pockets, monkeys. Many, many monkeys.

Each day, upon command ("Monkeys!") the pants produce 3d12 monkeys (see page 267, MM). These monkeys are CRAZY monkeys, however, and no amount of training, yelling or stomping of feet will get these monkeys to stop it with their crazy monkey shenanigans. The monkeys are possessed both a limited magical 'hive-mind' and an overwhelming, capricious desire to perform acts of mischief and tomfoolery.

The monkeys will probably eat all the rations and poop in the bedrolls. They will pants the cleric and 'honk' the elf's boobs. Also, they like to trip people, drink ale, and steal hats. The monkeys speak French.

Moderate Conjuration; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, Summon Nature's Ally III, Prestidigitation; Price 8,000 gp., 2 lbs.

Arrrroooo!!!!

That's me howling at the moon in joyous abandon at the honour.

But, I must insist that I get to have purple fur! ;)

OK, in preparation for RPGS2 judging, I came by here to reread some of the threads.

I just have to repeat: Monkey Pants, a joke entry by Boomer, was one of my favorite RPGS1 moments.

Actually, there were quite a few joke entries posted on that thread that were up there with the top 32 real entries.

But Boomer's Monkey Pants were by far the best.
