Carrying a carpet of flying

3.5/d20/OGL

Hi,

Quick question. I am bit lost with US volume measures. I can easily convert 2D feet, yards, etc. to metric system, but when I read that a Heward's Handy Haversack's central pouch can contain up to 8 cubic feet of volume, I have no idea whatsoever how this translate...

In the present case: can I stick a 5 ft. x 5 ft. Carpet of Flying in there?? I guess it is easy to roll or fold, but would the resulting volume fit in there?

I know it's kind of a wild guess and I'll have to see with my DM, but wanted to gauge the feeling of those who have an idea of what 8 cubic feet look like.

Thanks in advance.

Eight cubic feet in its simplest configuration is a box two feet on each side. Other shapes are possible, of course.

Your carpet will probably fit without issue. While it's 25 square feet on a side, your carpet is probably only a few centimeters thick if that. As long as it's not 4 inches thick or more, it should fit just fine.

If you know how to convert 1D and 2D measures, then it's easy to do 3D measures.

1 Meter just about equals 3 feet (Close enough for the game world, anyway.)
Really equals 3.28 feet

1 square meter equals 9 square feet (3 squared)
Really equals 10.76 square feet (3.28 squared)

1 cubic meter or 1000 liters equals 27 cubic meters (3 cubed)
Really equals 35.31 cubic feet (3.28 cubed)

So, in summary, just multiply the conversion again.

Thanks a lot!

Does anyone know how 'flexible' the interior dimensions of a Haversack are? 8 cubic feet sounds to me a lot like a Haversack might measure 2 feet x 2 feet x 2 feet internally. Given that a 5 feet x 5 feet carpet of flying will end up in a roll 5 feet long miimum, however you try to roll it in just three dimensions, some of the carpet may end up sticking out of the top of the haversack. (Less than three feet, since you can slot it in diagonally across opposing corners of the cube.) Since the carpet would be supported by the haversack, I would think that the weight of the carpet would be negated as per the normal rules of the haversack.

It *might* be possible to fold a carpet of flying up into a tighter package for storage (depending on the thickness of it) but as anyone who has tried to move a carpet will tell you, whilst rolling one is simple, folding most such things can get very tricky. Also, whilst a rolled carpet can relatively easily be spread (no more than a full round action at most, in the absence of complicating circumstances) unfolding a tightily bundled carpet might take some time longer unless the carpet has some sort of innate 'unfold at speed' ability.

We've always ruled that the haversack (and bag of holding) are flexible enought to stretch, and that things will fit as long as the total capacity of the bag/sack is not exceeded.

Actually, I was now thinking of the flying carpet as similar to one of the prayer mats used for muslim prayer (no offense meant, it just fits relatively well in terms of geographical/cultural sphere origin).

Those I saw so far were much thinner and finer than your run-of-the-mill European/North American dining room carpet and were folded for storing. Resulting in a volume/mass similar to a big folder or big photo album.

That would be for the 5x5 flying carpet of course.

If the carpet were mine, I'd ask the DM if it would be possible to cut a slot in the middle and mend the sides, while still keeping its magic flying quality(some DMs might rule that would ruin its magic). If the DM says yes, then I'd have my character wear it like a sarape, and over armor, like a light cloak.

but this might make it harder to fight while on (or balance checks might be harder)

I think that would pretty much qualify as ruining it. Though you could get one made like that. But as a bonus you would have an in flight toilet. Bombs away!

Poncho of Flying. Nice.

Now there's a funny idea, someone wearing it as a sarape and forgetting to take it off before giving the command to fly. The character might inadvertently be hung.
