I am afraid that I don't have the time at present to participate in this pbp as well. Sorry, at the time I first entered I thought I would have time. I'm really sorry.
Me either, I am impressed with the idea and the progress made sofar in the campain. I will have to drop out, I can barely keep up with the one PBP I'm in. Sorry!

Hey Marcus, I finally got around to looking at the math for Katja and noticed you need to work on your skills. In fact they look suspiciously familiar... :)
If you wanted some advice, how about the following skills: (+'s in parenthesis are from ability modifiers or feats)
Bluff +4 (+2) = +6
Computer Use +4
Spot +4 (+3)(+2) = +9
Listen +4 (+3) (+2) = +9
Craft (Photography) +4 (+3) = +7
Gather Information +4 (+2) = +6
Research +2
Craft (Writing) +2
Knowledge (Religion) +2
Escape Artist +2 (+2) = +4
Feats: Alertness, Skill Emphasis (Photography)
Also, Katja's current sanity is 80, not 55. Which is better for her.

Sorry to hear it for both of you. Between each seperate "adventure" I may advertise for players again and you are both welcome to join then.

I blame Katja. She didn't have a lot of positive role models when she was growing up...She hasn't yet learned that stealing is wrong...

How are we doing so far? I have never been good at the investigative side of DnD. It is hard for me to tell if we are making progress or if you are banging you head against your keyboard while I miss clues and opportunities.
Are Sense Motive checks automatic when an NPC lies or do we have to declare them. Should I declare attempts at Spot and Listen or do you make them passively and tell us the results. Enquiring minds want to know.
Is anyone else here old enough to remember that line?
Either way, I am having a lot of fun.

You guys are doing fine. If you are worried about investigative work, don't forget to use the library and the internet (in game). Your characters know how to do that.
If I think you need to make a spot check, I'll say so. Same for listen check and knowledge check. Sense motive is a bit trickier. For the most part I'll tend to just tell you what vibe you get from a person. If you want to do sense motives more often that's up to you. same with a generic Gather Information as opposed to detailed conversation.
As for "Enquiring Minds Want To Know," I'm 34 going on 35. I remember the phrase, though I tend to associate it with Sam (Corey Feldman) in "Lost Boys" giving his brother a rough time. :)
EDIT: When you take a picture make a skill check each time or let me know if you are going to take 10 or even take 20.

In 1995, TSR released the TABLOID! Game for the Amazing Engine system. In the back they have the following and I submit it for your amusement:
TABLOID! Rules to Better Reporting
Rule #1: A good reporter finds the news, don’t just wait for it to happen!
Rule #2: Get good quotes. Make the famous sound stupid. Prove scientist are pencil necked geeks. Make ordinary people sound smart. Make kooks sound kookier.
Rule #3: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Whatever.
Rule #4: Make it local or make it bloody. Either American or 10 dead.
Rule #5: The Severed Arm Shot. No photo, no story.
Rule #6: Write what sells. You’re not doing this for charity after all.
Rule #7: Don’t let the facts get in the way. When the real story is boring, embellish!
The Journalist’s Little Book of Ethics
I swear that, in pursuit of my trade:
I will only report the truth – as I understand it.
I will not knowingly slander or defame another – unless I can get away with it.
I will never reveal my sources – that way nobody knows if I made it all up.
I will report all quotes accurately – unless I couldn’t get an interview.
I will never inject personal bias into a report – I’ll just pretend that it’s someone else’s.
I will present both sides of every issue – at least in one sentence.
I will present both sides of every issue – even if one is completely loony.
I will attribute all names and photos accurately – even for the ones I make up.

I live in Ohio.
Amazing Engine was a system released by TSR (Designed by Dave "Zeb" Cook) where it was supposed to be possible to move the 'core' of your character from world to world and the experience you gained in each game world could be applied to all the clones of the character throughout the multiverse, so to speak. I never actually used the system but I liked the idea of a Tabloid rpg.

Fun for all

This from a guy who routinely RESPONDS to spam letters very humorously.
The most beautiful marriage of Nigerian email spam-scam and Cthulhu one might ever hope to see. It could inspire a whole campaign!

I think we should get the sceptre and take it to a local university so we can learn about it.
My initial thought on an article is to say Atlanteans attacked. We could portray Grip's cult as providing unheeded warnings about it. This way they might see us as benefactors for them and provide info on people in the town and the Bouncing Skipper.
Shenzoe
Hey Wicht,
I remember you saying that you may advertise for new players in the future, and I was just hoping you were keeping me in mind because this campaign looks totally awesome! I would be absolutely delighted to join in at any time, and thank god now I have time. Hope I am not being pushy. And again it looks awesome.

Did you have a character concept in mind?
Shenzoe
I was thinking I would be kind of a peculiar mix of punk (she likes death metal, punk rock, has bright green hair and a nose piercing) hippie, i.e she eats granola and organic food and shuns walmart and macdonalds, combined with a little bit of geek, meaning that she knows her way around computers and tech gadgets.
I was thinking that she would be a photographer and she would also be a pilot who learned from an uncle and has a pilot's license.
This is just a rough description please tell me what you think.
Thanks

Pilot is good. I can get a pilot into the game at just about any time.
So how about this - you can be hired as a pilot but your real aspiration is to be a photographer.

Alright, that is great I think my character is pretty much done. Please take a look at her in my profile under Carlotta Shelle.

Looking over the character - you should have had 40 skill points to spend. I think you only used about 28 of those if I am counting right.
Using 32 point buy - there's no reason your con should not be 10. 8 is the lowest but you should (I think) have another 2 points to spend. Unless you rolled and then its all good.
Shenzoe
I did indeed roll (4d6 drop the lowest)hope that is all right. I know that I did not use all of my skill points but I was really trying to build my character with my skills and I didn't think it fit the character to put max ranks in some of them and others I don't think Carlotta would have. If you would like me to change than I am happy to do so.

Hey- I'm here- and before leaving for work today I got Katja ready for bed, on the other thread. the evening of Day 1.

Now if only the other guys will reappear. :/

Shenzoe, feel free to join the game thread at any time now. Your character has just flown into town and been told to accompany Ken and Harvey until they are ready to leave. You have the phone number of their cell phones and a similar cell phone of your own, courtesy of your boss.

The hotel has nightstands? o_o
Oh, yeah. I guess they do. No, no necronomicons, dragonomicon, or even koboldnomicon. Just a battered copy of a Gideons. Reading material available thus includes Grip's pamphlet and the New Testament.

I know that we are expected to write a story for the paper within three days of starting. However, I will not be able to start writing until at least Tuesday the 13th. Real life gets in the way.
Oooo.... you might be a little slow getting paid then ;)
Just kidding. I'm just curious to see what you guys can come up with, it won't really matter in game.
So no worries.
Aramil Xiloscient
Hi Aramil, welcome aboard. That was fast. I was going to post tomorrow but this settles it nicely. Same character is fine.
When do you plan to start? Do you have the character sheet I made, because I don't have it. If you don't, I'll just re-make it. Any specific rules? Any special feats or classes?
Also, is this d20 modern stat rules? Please fill me in!!!

From the top of the thread,
To recap:
There are two “Classes” in Call of Cthuhlu d20. They are "Defensive" and "Offensive"
Defensive 1st level has 2 good saves (choose from Fort, Ref, Will; good saves are +2, the other is +0), +0 BAB, and +2 AC.
Offensive 1st level has 1 good save, +1 BAB, and 1 free weapon proficiency feat. Each character picks a profession which allows for eight associated skills +3 skills of a characters choice.
If you pick a profession, I'll give you a list of skills associated with that profession. Typical Professions include Antiquarian, Archaelogist, Artist/Musician, Blue collar Worker, Criminal, Priest, Soldier, Technician, Businessman, Writer/Reporter.
If you want the writer/reporter profession – the associated class skills are:
craft (photography)
craft (writing)
Diplomacy
Gather Information
Innuendo
Knowledge (any one)
Knowledge (any one)
Research
Sense Motive
+3 of the players choice.Characters start with 32 skill points (+int. bonus x4)
Abilities are either 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange as desired; or 28 point buy.
Each character will have $12,000 starting cash to buy this or that. (laptops, cameras and the like would be appropriate). Assume modern prices. This may take a little googling or “shopping” on Amazon or the like.
Players at this point are:
Shenzoe,
Bill Lumberg
And Aramil XiloscientIn character you know that you have been hired by Hugh Rogers, owner, publisher and editor in chief of the Sunlight Scoop, a bi-weekly tabloid of a sensationalist nature. It regularly prints stories about alien abductions, elvis clones, and giraffe boy. You have either been hired as a writer or a photographer and your character should be of such a sort as would be willing to take such a job, unpublished writer, retired soldier, etc.
The game will be set in the modern era (today more or less - though not exactly in our real world of course).
I might add to this that you have a starting sanity of Wisdom x5, and a maximum sanity of 99.
