XYZZY! XYZZY!

As we don't have clothes to take off, I shudder to think where we've pocketed the sock.

If anyone out there has Zork. Type in plugh or what Shiny wrote above.

I didn't say you don't have any clothes... I said you don't have any clothes *to take off*. :-)

Though if you like, you can think of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for your sock storage inspiration.

=) ... What a great game, and the failure to continue writing sequels is, IMO, one of the greatest failures of the computer game industry.

I loved Starcross and Planetfall (the one with Floyd the robot)... and a host of other infocom titles. Zork 3 went to Beyond Zork then Zork Zero... an attempt to use a hp system rather than outright death. This, an example of "keeping up with the latest videogames" (sound familiar) that led to franchise death because their innovation left the fanship far far behind.

Drawing Room

You're in the drawing room. You can tell, because the words "Drawing Room," along with the number "0," have been carved into the wooden paneling. There are exits to the south, east, north, and west.

There are two drawings on the wall—they're not framed or anything, just literally drawn on the wall. There are two dusty easy chairs, each accompanied by an end table. The chairs match, but the tables don't. One of the tables has a drawer and a shelf, while the other has three shelves. The shelves are empty.

You don't know how to do that.

The words "Drawing Room," along with the number "0," have been carved into the wooden paneling.

You open the drawer. There is a clear plastic roll of pennies here. The pennies are very shiny. Mmm. Shiny pennies.

Foyer

You are in a small—actually very tiny—foyer. You can tell it's the foyer because someone has written the word "Foyer" on the wall. The front door is to the south, and to the north is a drawing room.

Your hands are full. You can't take anything else.

Hallway
You're in a hallway, which connects to rooms east, west, and south, and to another hallway to the north. There's nothing to tell you it's a hallway, but you're pretty sure that that's what this is. You're a worldly person, and you've seen hallways before.

You put the pennies in your pocket. You're sad that you can no longer see how they shine.

Roll of quarters—taken. The weight feels good in your hand. It makes you feel strong, like you could take on Goliath.

You put the quarters in your pocket. The weight feels good in your pocket, though the shape is a bit uncomfortable.

Hedge Maze
You're in a hedge maze. At least, it *used to be* a hedge maze, but it hasn't been tended to in years, and the dense shrubbery only allows access between an open doorway to the west, and two open doorways to the north, each leading to different rooms. Tucked into the bushes, a faded wooded sign proclaims "17: Hedge Maze."

Carriage House

Despite the distinct lack of carriages, you work out that this must be the carriage house. This is probably because somebody spray-painted the words "Carriage House (18)" above every door. There are open doorways to the east, north, and west. A large roll-up door takes up most of the wall to the south. There is a workbench here.

Through the doorway to the east, you spot the fearsome friendly-looking old man. He doesn't seem to see you. He's quietly whistling a jaunty tune, which you recognize as the one song you most hate in the entire world, yet you can't help but hum along.

The workbench is spotted with oily grime, topped with a layer of dust, making for a most unpleasant work area. Perhaps this is why it's devoid of any tools or hardware, save for a single bolt with a domed head. You recall that this is called a carriage bolt, and wonder if it might be why this room is called the Carriage House. Nah. That would be silly.

The man looks sort of vacant, in a pleasant but horrible sort of way. His clothing is so many years out of fashion that he's almost fashionable. You find that the very notion of him troubles your soul, while simultaneously offering your soul a nice hot cup of tea.

Tucked into the bushes, a faded wooded sign proclaims "17: Hedge Maze."

As soon as you enter the Hedge Maze, the man gently brushes past you, entering the Carriage House without ever seeming to have noticed you.

There is no man here, but you can see him doddering around in the room to the west.

You're not holding the sock.

Piazza

You are standing in a brick piazza, unusual only in that the number "19" has been painted on the bricks. There are three steps up to the front door from the piazza, and there are also doors to the right and the left. As you enter the room, the old man exits to the north. He moves surprisingly fast for an old man.

There is no old man here.
