Pathfinder compass

Rise of the Runelords

I recall reading some minor magic item used by pathfinders that had a compass, and a slot for ioun stones, etc...i want to have one of my party be given one with her trial pf membership, and i cannot for the life of me remember what pg/book this is located on, despite repeated flippings...am I crazy/did I make this thing up???

I believe it was in Pathfinder #2 in the Journal section.

You didn't. I think it might be in one of the Pathfinder Journals, try Pathfinder #2 or #3.

Yeah, it's # 2, for some reason I kept looking past it b/c I remembered it called a 'pathfinder compass' or something like that...'wayfinder' just didn't stick in my head...

Verdant Wheel

Huh ... what happens if someone actually fits it with a Ioun Stone ?

So far it hasn't been described, mechanically. So I guess for now, just make something up?

The only mechanics that have been described is that you will gain the normal power of the ioun stone. So basically by putting one into the wayfinder you can gain the power of a single ioun stone without needing it fly around your head. However, by doing this you do lose the power for it to cast the spell light at free will. As well it is noted that the Wayfinder can unleash hidden new powers from an Ioun stone, again this has not been explained in game mechanics. Maybe James will be kind enough to let everyone know more.

I certainly will... eventually. I'm not sure when we'll fully detail the wayfinder and the various effects ioun stones have on them, but it won't be any time particularly soon. The rules certainly haven't been written yet, so there's not really anything more to show off about them at all yet.

That's okay james, annabit will be thrilled just receiving one as proof of her probationary membership to the pathfinders... :)

That can be one of the tasks to gain full membership - find out how/why to power up the Wayfinder (give them x weeks/months game time before the report will be accepted, so you can learn the rest without having to make it up)

great idea! I was going to hinge full membership on some other stuff, but I think I like this better :)

There's no reason those effects have to be the same all the time: Rather than just depending on the kind of stone you use, it could be different from person to person. Or by race. Alignment. Classes. What moon you were under when you fit the stone into the wayfinder (warning: Never combine a wayfinder with its stone under the Demon Moon!)

Why not? Could it be that if you insert an ioun stone into a wayfinder compass under a Demon Moon, you gain the abilities of a medium grade demon?

Of course, if you allow that as the DM, there's always a chance of mis-firing, and having the PC actually 'become' a full fledged demon. LOL.

Just another way to drive your characters up the wall.
