Congratulations to the Top 8!

I'm looking forward to those new monsters! Why, oh why, does it have to be nearly two weeks before we get to see them? I'm sure the extra time will make the monsters that much better.

Announcement is here, by the way.

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

Congrats to the Top 8!

A few real contenders didnt make the cut--Migrus, Stained Peaks. Let that be a lesson to those who made it. One great round isnt enough to be a Superstar. You have to bring it round after round.

I can't wait to see these monsters...

I would also like to congratulate the voters. We had great turn out, which of course makes you feel real good about picking the top 8. Votes are so much more valid when you have a larger sample and when that larger group expresses clear preferences. While I wont reveal voting numbers, let me say that the top entries were head and shoulders above the others as far as voting goes. There was a very clear line of those that made it and those that didnt. The votes really told a clear story.

Oh no! No Samuel Kisko!!

Congratulations to everyone else though. You've worked hard top make it where you are.

PS> Sam, dude, you need write adventures.

Congratulations to the winning 8. And to the rest of the ones that didn't win this round but nonetheless had some great stuff!

Grats to the winners, I look forward to seeing that all comes up in the following rounds.

That was the plan but it didn't quite work out :P

Maybe next time.

Off topic, but I picked up Dark Heresy yesterday, fantastic game. Highly recommended.

Congratulations to the winners, and darned if some of the 'losers' didn't have some incredible submissions that make me sad to realize that I won't get to see their monster ideas.

I am amused to discover that between the last two rounds, I only duplicated one vote, meaning that my tastes must be all over the place...

Kudos to all competitors who persevered and made their deadlines, accepted critiques graciously, and raised the bar when waving the gauntlet of creativity. My compliments to all those who took the time to really study the entries, and then made constructive comments before all the voting closed on each round.

And now best wishes to the Octagon of Round Four contestants!

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 aka Clandestine

Congratulations to the well-deserving Top 8. I'm pleased to say 3 of the 4 people I voted for moved on. :)

Dark Archive

Same here...
But I'm sad that Hal's entry didn't make it. His Martyr Eater was a really cool idea....

I also have congratulations to offer the Top 8, as well as some unsolicited advice:

Sections of the current assignment have no word limit. Do not abuse this. The judges think that the eight entries for this round will collectively present the highest total number of words for any round so far, and that means there is a high potential for voter fatigue.

Many—perhaps most—voters will not be reading every entry all the way to the end, and if you lose them before you're done... you lose.

Consider formatting. Use white space; use BBCode tags. Giant blocks of homogeneous text will hurt your readability, and that will hurt you.

Keep it concise, and keep it fascinating. Any words you include that do not contribute directly to "fascinating" should be reconsidered.

Good luck to you all!

Congrats to all!

My top 2 made it, which were the only two I actually voted for. But my next 3 all made it as well, so it all worked out well.

Looking forward to the monsters!

Well done all. It was a pleasure to read all the entries and look for things to borrow. For those eight who advanced, congratulations!

Indeed. I think I have a good block of introductory text so far. Now to start on actually statting up these monsters.

By the way, both the sample stat block and the introductory stat block have a line entry for "sex creature class level" - Should we assume that is a remnant from when we used a similar block for the villains? That info would seem to presuppose a singular creature, not a 'monster.'

Thanks

congrads to the top 8 and well done to the ones who didnt make it

I'm assuming YES - I've already deleted that on my copies of the sample.

But if you are designing a sex creature, wouldn't you want to know the class and level?

I am now looking forward very much to three related sex creatures. Be inventive; what would make hot succubus barnyard sex even hotter?!?

Why, the half-fire elemental template, of course...

Thanks, I'm here all week. Thank you for visiting the Armada Room at the Everett Holiday Inn. Enjoy the buffet...

Adding my congratulations to all the people continuing on in this competition! Go Forward! Move Ahead! Try To Detect It! Its Not Too Late!

I have to say, all 4 of my picks (including another one I agonized over) are in the top 8!

=)

One of the things that always gets me going as a GM, are interesting monsters. The original AD&D Monster Manual is still my favorite book. Sometimes I would read that book cover to cover just to get that "tingly" feeling all over again, and get my GM juices flowing! (No Succubus comments please!)

Do THAT to me, and you have my vote.

Good job and good luck. I look forward to seeing all of your monster work.

One more vote for congratulating the masterful 8, along with everyone else who participated and gave so much to this contest.

Yes. That is just the generic stat block. I should have pulled that line out. :)

Hey, I'm mostly done with monster #1 (at least the first pass) and have monster #2 roughed out. It's only the first day, give us a break!

As a voter, I recommend that too. While I do enjoy good imagery, I like clear and concise writing and having a fit of verbal diarrhea is a good way to alienate me.

Dang. nobody I voted for moved on. Stoopid contest.:)

I am pleased that so far everyone I have voted for has moved on to the next round. I just wish that the countries I voted for had all advanced this round. Not only do I want to feel like I have consistent good taste, but I really felt like some contestants dropped the ball with the villains despite some great ideas and great expression of those ideas. Here's hoping for some success (but not too much success!) in Superstar 2, and that they get other opportunities based on their work already. You guys deserve credit for the distance you carried yourselves! Congratulations!

And as for the Top 8 - how does that feel? You're each in the 99th percentile, and you only need wow us with three very original monsters, well-written, with a well-conceived theme, and flawless mechanics to move on to the Final Four! Congratulations!

Actually they'll move on to the final 6, then they have to come up with an encounter, then they go on to the final 4 to create a full blown adventure. I'm truelly excited, and look forward to seeing what these talented people can dish out.

My advice: Listen to the judges, they know what they are talking about. You might think they are being mean, or picking on you but please take their critisim, and use it. They are only here to help.

Eh, easy ball to drop. The round definitely felt artificial and I think a couple of the best writers were taken out because of it. James MacKenzie's Land of Stained peaks is better than any realm I've seen in print in a long, long time. Great stuff and I was looking forward to his future entries. C'est la vie.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 16 aka Sir_Wulf

The Great Eight deserve every complement for their consistent creativity and effort. Their villains eclipse the ones found in many commercial products, and I'm sure that their writing will be even better as they are given more scope for their ideas.

[snarky]Of course, MY monsters were going to leave them all in the dust...[/snarky] ;-)

All my favourites got through, well done to all!

One of the most remarkable things about this contest and community has been the excellent sportsmanship displayed throughout. Contestants have been grateful for feedback, have acknowledged great entries other than their own, are congratulatory when they don't move on, and are using all their votes instead of just voting for themselves.

And no one has worked the dreaded google bomb that we know of.

I know there was a more intense reaction to the initial top 32 when some of us dtood by the items that didn't advance. But overall, this community has really made the contest a fun learning experience, and applauded the inaugural superstars for their effort and performance. I am very impressed by that.

Well, that wasn't aimed specifically at you, Sam. I can tell you I think you are the best writer not to advance after laast round, and Stained Peaks was a quality submission. If two guys deserved to move on for past efforts, it would be you two. I think the swell of new people only voting for one round changed the dynamic a bit, as most of them didn't read the previous rounds and mark a favorite contestant.

I most wholeheartedly agree - this contest has, to a greater or lesser extent, renewed my faith in online exchange, previously bashed right in the skull and left dead on the side of the road by my limited experiences with Fark.com, 4chan and HCRealms.

Well, what is it, and why is it dreaded?

You could Google it and see. :)

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 7

A google bomb is the manipulation of a search engine to make it return a result you want. For instance, for a long time 'Miserable Failure' on google redirected to whitehouse.gov, and 'fat bastard' found Michael Moore's homepage. Google keeps tweaking their algorithms to make this harder to do.

If this case, you might try to redirect some common search terms to your Superstar entry in the hopes of getting people to vote for you, I guess.

Bit late, but congrats to the top 8 and many thanks to those who didn't make it for all their work and ingenuity to this point!

I am sure the Great Eight are all breathing a monster sigh of relief now that their current efforts are in the hands of the judges...am looking forward to Thursday when we can all start viewing the entries.

Since this is Paizo's inaugural Superstar contest,I have been wondering if these eight will receive some special acknowledgement of their efforts, especially with regard to the international aspect of the contenders? After all, they will always be the first eight to have made it to this level.

All I know is that I kept my record intact of submitting with less than 10 minutes to go before the deadline!

In some ways the extra week was good, especially since it overlapped Christmas & New Year's, but it also seemed like a really long time compared to the earlier rounds. I had mostly finished my stuff late Friday (actually like 3:30 Saturday morning!) but let it sort of sit and marinate before doing some last-minute editing (and hopefully simplifying) this morning.

I think Gary Teter said that the RPG Superstar tags (from whatever group you finished in) will stay on your message board ID until the next RPGSS contest. Besides that, I'm all for more bling-bling but I don't know that anything else is planned.
