Play by Post - Korvosa

Gamer Connection

Who's interested in a PbP set in Korvosa? Start with a home-brew side-trek then roll into Curse of the Crimson Throne. I'll tend to emphasize role-playing and character interaction because it will help make up for rusty DM skills.

4 to 6 players. Two spots already reserved. One for a friend of mine in his first PbP. He's thinking arcane caster. Another for TheOcho, who might be thinking urban ranger or some such.

Details, details. Core books/SRD only to start. Other options possible by special arrangement, but unlikely. I'll be trying to post daily during the work week, infrequently on weekends, and would like the same commitment from the players. I travel fairly freqently on business though so there will be short announced gaps in my posting schedule. Play to start in January, but I'll want player concepts (not full stats, history and equipment)before Christmas so I can customize my sidetrek to the characters.

I'm currently enjoying Wicht's RotRL PbP, but would be interested in possibly adding another. As for class, I'm open - maybe a rogue, a favored soul, or just a straight up fighter, depending on what's needed. I'm on EST, and can post often, and I'm working through a little rust myself since, other than recently joining Wicht's game, it's been a very, very long time since I last played.

A LN cleric of Asmodeus fine with you?

Scarab Sages

I would like to play. I can play just about anything, but prefer roguish sorts of individuals. Though, I've also been wanting to play an archer based character as well lately, just to see how well it would work.

Three plus two = five. One potential opening left. Maybe a heavy hitter. I prefer neutral to good alignments. Makes it easier to run a "help others" campaign and I think it's better for party and player cohesiveness.

Radavel, I would normally shy away from a character with an evil diety, but an really interested to see what you do with it.

I'd be happy to play a straight-up fighter, perhaps a town-guard burnout case or something along those lines.

I'm not currently in a PBP, but have a fair bit of experience with them. Can post almost every day (GMT-5).

I am more than a little interested, especially in the crimson throne bit.

Is this just first come first serve or is their some form of application, I'm in EST, and am able to post frequently during the week (Student).

Is the party actually looking for a heavy hitter or are things still quite up in the air. If the party wanted to go skillful I'd probably go scout, (or Rouge can't have too many rouges as long as they are differentiated and helpful towards each other) or if it was permitted Warblade or Bard (with a focus on combat or at least the attempt to, think the mighty fencer).

Hope that helps and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Exchange

Just posting to confirm my spot. An urban ranger is still my primary choice. Depending on others/GM I can swing to something different.

A couple of rough drafts I have so far are:

Darthen – Half-Orc Ranger
Darthen was born to a prostitute mother. She was a lowly wench that served drinks in a scum filled tavern and serviced the patrons any way she could to make ends meet. Living in the slums he quickly learned to fend for himself and make a meager living off stolen goods. When he was 13 his mother was savagely beaten to death. Having no way to earn his keep at the tavern he was promptly kicked out. He barely managed to stay alive living off the streets. After a few months, and about to give up on life, he was suddenly kidnapped. With a sack over his head and his limbs tied down he was taken to a warehouse in near the docks. Once his captors stopped they pulled the sack off and he saw a middle aged man dressed in nobles clothes standing just a few feet away. Thalus explained that he was always on the lookout for young talent to help build his ranks. He offered Darthen an opportunity he couldn't refuse, work for him and live or die. Working for Thalus was not bad once he was properly trained. No longer was he taking fruits off the sellers stand. Now he was working as an enforcer. Breaking into businesses, collecting protection money, and looking for those that crossed the guild.

This would be kind of hard to explain why he went with an adventuring party when he is perfectly happy bashing peoples heads in for a mobster. I really like his background though :) Maybe his exploits got the best of him and he was eventually caught and jailed. He kept his mouth shut and survived in jail but felt disenfranchised about the whole beating people for money situation he was in. So he left from whatever city he is from and came to Korvosa

Something more upbeat but not really describing an urban ranger:

Fenris – Halfling Ranger
Fenris grew up unexceptionally. He spent his entire life of 18 years learning the metal working trade of his father in hopes of taking over the family business once he complete the adulthood ceremony on his 20th birthday. On his 19th birthday his cousin Thaelin came to make him an offer. With their adulthood coming up quickly Thaelin wanted to go on an adventure before having to settle down and work the family business. Intrigued by his cousins offer Fenris packed his bags to his parents protest. They left that day. On their journey they encountered many strange people and places. They had to learn to hunt for food and build shelters to stay dry and warm. Learning the lay of the lands and how to avoid the most dangerous places came easy to Fenris. During their travels the two would temporarily join up with other like minded people and explore the lands. Two weeks before their 20th birthdays Thaelin told Fenris it was time to head back home and take on their responsibilities. Fenris however was not enthusiastic about that. He told Thaelin that he could not go back because there was so much more to see and experience. Thaelin tried to persuade him to go back but he did not budge. With only a week left Thaelin left Fenris making him promise to come back after he had his fill of adventuring.

I can modify this easily to accomodate an urban setting. Instead of hunting and building shelter in forests. They stayed in cities doing odd jobs for a few weeks before moving to the next city.

I'm interested.

In another play-by-post here, I mentioned an NPC bard with specilization as an attorney. I've been thinking about that kind of a character, and would be interested in exploring it in an urban setting like Korvosa.

If there is still a spot available. I would be interested.

I am trying to create a character who is akin to Judge Dredd and I felt that Abadar is not an extreme enough lawful deity. With the appropriate feats, I can make this cleric, a formidable melee combatant, ready to shed his blood but more ready to shed the blood of others. This doesn't mean he is uncooperative though. In fact, he is honorable to the letter.

Moreover, as the campaign is set in and around Korvosa, I think a cleric of Asmodeus would not be out of place. Though if hellknight is available as a character option, perhaps I'd take that instead.

By the way, any guidelines with respect to character generation, besides core/SRD. 32 Point-buy? Max HP? Max Gold? Would you allow divine and domain feats? How about alternative class features? Things like these.

Scarab Sages

Are you thinking of allowing bonus feats, such as those suggested in the RotRL players guide?

I think I will try my archer concept out if I am in. Fighter multiclassing into rogue.

Is there still a slot open?

Hmmm . . . If I'm in, I need to do some thinking. It looks like you might have an arcane, cleric, urban ranger, and a fighter/rogue/archer type in play. Maybe a straight up rogue?

Wicht- Have you seen the barbarian variant on the hypertext srd that swaps rage abilities for the ranger's archer feats? I just noticed it last night, but it looks like an interesting idea.

I have now.

Looks like we're full.

Players:

Dan -- arcane caster
TheOcho -- ?
Billzabub -- ?
Radavel -- Cleric
Wicht --
Pat O' the 9th -- fighter?

Waiting list:

Logos : Yes it was first come/first serve. I couldn't bear to do applications. Kind of elitist for me and then if my DM sucked its too terrible to consider. If you're really psyched about Crimson Throne you'll probably get to play it faster in another group. Depending on posting frequency, I could see the side trek taking 2-3 months.
Chris Mortika: The lawyer concept is very interesting. Please email me.
Bray Abbit: Sorry
Artaris: Sorry, I like what you're doing in your game. Would have been fun to have you in the group.

Wait listers : Please check back in a day or so in case one of the players decides he'd rather not play. Or I can contact you if you send me a message:

kenner_tim "at this domain" yahoo "dot com"

More to come this evening.

Whew -- under the wire!

The Exchange

Ok, I did some re-writing for the Urban Ranger I wanted to try out. Instead of posting a big wall of text like I did earlier I created an alias and updated his bio with the info.

http://paizo.com/people/Darthen

Thom, let me know if his background will be a good fit for your campaign. I invision him as private eye. Similiar to the Thief catcher, Juilin Sandar, from Wheel of Time.

Scarab Sages

The bare bones of a character:

Jeorik Vandor

character background/concept

Spoiler:
LG Human Fighter 1
Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon focus (Longbow)

A faithful follower of Erastil, Jeorik (pron Chee-or-ik) Vander has been a hunter since his youth. Jeorik’s father, Taylo Vandor, originally a native of Korvosa, in his youth wandered the length and breadth of Varisia, seeking adventure. His greatest adventure, he often said, was the battle to woo Jeorik’s mother, a Varisian dancer. The two of them, the Korvosan warrior and the Varisian wanderer married, jointly renounced their transitory ways, settled down just outside of Ilsurian and began their family.

All six of his father’s children learned swordplay and the importance of martial prowess nor did they feel that this was unusual, for all Ilsurian children were likewise trained by one or more of their elders. In addition to his normal martial training, Jeorik, from an early age, showed an aptitude for the bow and for hunting. Often was the time that he would provide the meat his family ate and as he grew older, he often would sell venison and game meat to the butcher in Ilsurian.

Two years ago, Taylo died. Now Jeorik, as the oldest of six, has taken it upon himself to journey to Korvosa to share the news of his father’s demise with his father’s two brothers Dorman and Wermis Vandor. Jeorik however has no idea where the two live. All he knows is that his father often said that Wermis had been in training to be a Hellknight as a boy.

Let me know if the Korvosian hook works or not.

My turn:

Muscle

What I have in mind so far is a straight-up rogue, of the sneaky bastard variety. He and Ocho's character have a bit in common, and possibly(?) know each other from the streets. He is also half-elven, but he doesn't know who his parents are, and he's gotten by living on the streets. He has a serious chip on his shoulder, is a bit of a risk taker, a scrappy (some would say dirty) fighter, and he has a very strong dislike for full blooded elves.

Thanks. Oh well, have fun and good luck.

You want roleplaying? You've got it. If Pat's Darvyl is the muscle, here's the attitude.

He's a little different than I was originally thinking. He's human, and he's very much the scoundrel. One part con-man, one part sneak, and one part nasty mofo. He defintely has a chip on his shoulder, and is prone to swearing (I'll keep it PG and use asterisks) and running his smart mouth. He also has a strong dislike for elves, religion, and authority in general.

This should make for some interesting interactions, and I do hope everyone takes anything said in character as actual roleplaying. "You call that a bowshot, you ********? What are you, blind as a ******* varisian bat?"

Oh, and if anyone might find this offensive, please let me know now.

Guys, the Paizo just ate a rather lengthy post to you and I've got to get some sleep. Breezing through your character ideas they look great. I'll probably start the discussion thread early next week where we can go into details of player creation.

So:

Darvyl, human melee fighter
[unnamed], human rogue
Cheorik, human ranged fighter
Darthen, half-elf urban ranger / security specialist
[unnamed], human (?) cleric of (Asmodeus?)
[unnamed], unspecified arcane caster

Looks pretty good to me!

It also seems quite likely that Darvyl and Darthen are acquainted.

The Exchange

Suggesting that we know each other is a pretty solid idea. Most likely they live in the same general area or Darther has tried to gather information from him before.

Thom, sorry to hear about the post getting eaten. I am pretty excited to get more information from you.

"Ghost" probably knows both the Ds as well, having frequented many of the same pubs and taverns, although he really is more of a hood, and their relations may not be all that nice.

Update:

Darvyl, human melee fighter
"Ghost", human rogue
Cheorik, human ranged fighter
Darthen, half-elf urban ranger / security specialist
[unnamed], human (?) cleric of (Asmodeus?)
[unnamed], unspecified arcane caster

Darvyl could well have been better acquainted with Ghost before Darvyl's brief guard career.

I just hope being the acquaintance, or even the friend, of a cleric of the Lord of the Nine doesn't turn you off. But then again, this is Korvosa, knowing someone in the clergy might actually be beneficial to one's career. :D

Hi, guys, work has been a killer. Still is.

Don't tie your characters into one cohesive group yet. Bringing the group together is the point of the sidetrek. Two or three small groups who know each other, and assorted aquaintances are good.

Not a problem, but I think my rogue (not sure if I'm going with the name yet) is going to be pushing your cleric's buttons. Which reminds me I need to revise his alignment to CN.

I think pushing this cleric's buttons may be hazardous to your health. Ha ha ha :D

Yeah, that's sorta the problem . . .

Here I am. I'll get going on this soon.

Click here for the discussion thread.

And let me apologize for sporadic posting. I know its discouraging when the DM drops out of sight, but unfortunately I will be erratic until January. Christmas is a very busy time.
