What happens if there's a tie?

I've been thinking that with 5 votes each, the top 10-12 will likely get the majority of the votes, with the remaining entries getting only a small number each. Since the top 16 advance, what happens if there's a tie for 16th place?

Sorry if this has been asnwered already, but I didn't see anything in the rules and FAQ nor any of the RPG Superstar threads I've been reading.

No, that's actually a REALLY good question. I think the odds of such a thing are statistically very, very low, but stranger things have happened.

So: my guess would be, considering that I'm privvy to exactly 0% of the official rules discussions, that one of a couple of the will happen:

(1) Judge's Call - our three esteemed judges will make a secret executive decision, sworn by blood-oath against ever letting the world know, so as to maintain the integrity of the contest.

(2) Special Challenge - all those tied for the final slot (two tied for 16th, three tied for 15th, or whatever) will be given a special Sudden Death assignment, such as an editing phase or a free-style rap-battle, with the 16th contestant voted in by run-off.

(3) A pair of "Last Place" members of the next round - the strangest, this would put two people on a kind of 'probation', where they would both get to submit entries for the next round but could be yanked by either Judge or voter fiat.

(4) Or, of course, something else.

. . . so, judges, are any of those guesses close?

In the event of a tie, the winner will be the entry that used the word "throne" the most often.

We were just discussing this (well, I mean to say I just raised it this morning in the judges forum). And frankly it was one of the biggest reasons to move to a "vote for 5" system. After reviewing the submissions, we really felt that there were 8-10 that would likely receive the bulk of the votes in a 1-vote system. That left us with little to no way to meaningfully discriminate between the rest of the top 16 and that isnt fair to contestants. The 5-vote method is definately making that less of an issue. However, there is still the chance that the last two of the top 16 for instance has the same number of votes. I proposed that the judge break the tie, since there are 3 of us which is conducive to tie breaking. But that hasnt been decided yet.

I guarantee you it wont be a sudden death assignment. :) Well, I guess I cant guarantee since I am not the only decision maker. But lets just say that option has about a snowball's chance in hell (and I dont mean any of the frozen planes of hell, if you see what I mean).

By the way, I dont think we will be ranking the top 16, so you wont have any idea who was #1 and who was #16. :)

Of course there's always the option of kicking out the tied players and rolling ancient sensei in as the new bottom 'seed'. You know, the way those reality shows have like a second bachelor, or a twin, or a guy everyone thought was eaten by alligators in the last season.

Nah shouldnt happen as it is possible that people did not cast 5 votes. I only casted 2 votes myself. :)

Well, THAT will keep things interesting.

Thank you for your insight, by the way.

Remember, I'm not the final decision maker on this by a long shot. I'm just talking about my thoughts on it.

The Exchange

Personally since Eric has already said that the voters and not the judges decide the next round, (100% was the phrase he used) then surely all the tied people go through.

Otherwise my vote might not count.

However this is a very fluid contest in terms of the rules. But that's my take on this.

Cheers

Plainly - but you know a lot more than I do, and having a guy with both your authority (lots!) and your candor (plenty!) present throughout the contest has been invaluable for my sanity.

I sort of hope that this would be the option, because it would be pretty funny to see the free-style rap battle determine the results, even if I would have no hope of winning that tie breaker.

I like not raning the top 16. I think there's already a bit of harshness on the contestents (once or twice frm me, even), and they should be on "fresh" footing for the next round.

I also think if there is a tie for 16th place, you should just have 17 entrants in the next round. I know the jeduges must be tire,d but really what;'s -one- more entry.

Now, if there is a 7-way tie for 16th place (all with five votes, say), that obviously wouldn't work. I *personally* would like to see the winner of that tie be the one the most judes have already recommended for the top 16. If that's still more than a 2-way tie, then i think the judges should just pick among themselves.

We if have a sudden death write-off, or let fans vote again, those entries are automatically "rankes" in last place, and the poor contestant who doesn't get in the final set knows they were 8this* close.

Judge to his wife, 'Hey hon, would you rather sell your body parts for social status, or be chased on vast plains by blink dogs that want to use your skin for a puppy nest?'.

'Awwww! Puppies!'

'Right-O, we have da winnah!'

Hopefully the situation wont come up.

But we are learning as we go. I intend to address tiebreakers in the rules for round 3 :)

I'm already working on the round 3 instructions.

I am mulling over some ideas should I move on to the next round, is there a judges email address I can use for one or two technical questions? Or is there a way to send a PM on these message boards? can't seem to find one.

I would also like your email address, but not for any technical questions or anything.

Just . . . you know. To send you unsolicited porn and stuff.

If there's a tie, the judges could just advance both of the tied contestants to the next round. What harm would it do?

What ever happened to Thunderdome?

How about this: The tied contestants each make up their BBEG, with the stipulation they have the same CR. Then they duke it out, and the survivor goes on to the next round of voting.

I agree. I don't care what they did last round, what do they have for me NOW?

By the way, I started a new thread where we can discuss the instructions for round 3.
