"In addition, Hobert Lanham, Mirza Jasarevic, Robert Nichols and Russell Taylor were selected as alternates. (Names listed in alphabetical order.)"

What role in the contest do these alternatives have ?

If any of the top 32 drop out for any reason, an alternate moves in to take their place.

Should any of the 1st rounders stumble upon the way, we have a shot at taking their place. The first two alternates (originally there were 6 of us) already got in due to a pair of entries exceeding the word count limit.

I'm taking it as a compliment, since the items that won were (in my opinion) pretty good.

some have already been used
they are submitting countries in the next round as well. If any of the 32 skip out on the round, or just blow it by an obvious rule infraction, the next alternate in line gets bumped up.
Two have already when it was realized that 2 winners had too many words. I was kind of surprised that hadn't been discovered or decided before the announcement.

Thank you people for the quick replies !

So were we. :) Chalk it up to the herculean effort the judges put in during a holiday weekend, with Erik on vacation, to get the top 32 picked. Next time, it will be somebody's job to run the winners through a word counter. :)

I bet your awesome staff could code that so it happened on the inbound, and attached the count to the initial post. It doesn't sound like a very difficult script to me...

I couldn't find a word count function for MySQL, but I'm pretty sure you can code this into the backend when the info is uploaded. :)

Assuming MySQL works a lot like Oracle SQL, it wouldn't be very difficult to write your own function to perform the task. It's pretty much just a matter of counting the number of spaces that appear in the field (and adding one to account for the last word).

If we do another one of these with an open call, I'm seriously considering implementing a word count right into the submission tool. Dunno about which methodology I'd use for counting words (there are several). I always kind of liked the old "every five characters is a word", but that's probably just a holdover from the days I learned to type... on a MANUAL typewriter.
