How many entered?

RPG Superstar™ 2008 General Discussion

I would guess exact number wouldn't be right, but can we get an idea of how many people entered? I have no sense of how many people frequent these boards or heard of the contest. Is it a choice of 32 out of hundred or thousands? Just trying to see if I have better odds playing the lottery. ;)

850+

But a more relevant question is, of the 850+ that entered, how many were bounced for technical reasons?

That would give a better idea of how much competition there is. Based on what I've seen and heard on the boards, I'm guessing that no less than a third of the entries have been rejected out of hand, either for illegal material use, illegal word count, or other reasons. Might even be higher.

In some ways, I think we are better off playing a lottery game. I've seen experienced contributors posted that they've entered (though not so experienced as to be disqualified...) and I have seen some really brilliant amateurs post either their second string items (Ken Marable, I'm looking at you and your False Track Arrows) and some extremely clever postings on the Uncouth thread (my personal favorite so far being Mothman's Stone of Usefulness). I'm confident that the judges are being sincere when they say they've got loads of great items when they still have hundreds left to go through. That haven't been said, I try not to get discouraged, and no one else should either. It's neigh impossible to say which items will capture the judges imagination. But I look forward to seeing what they finally force themselves to unveil as their top 32. And while our odds may be better with lottery games where winners are determined by chance rather than careful consideration and competition, I had so much fun putting my item together that I don't regret a moment of the effort, regardless of the outcome.

Would be funny if a Smurf ended up winning.

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

Probably not more than 50 bounced for word count, etc.

Some people have taken my prior post of 1/20 were over word count to apply that to the whole 850+ submissions. That is not right. That night I had a run of over-count submissions but that was the exception not the rule. And it certainly seems that the later submissions were much much better about that.

"They CAN be taught!"

As said by a blue genie slapping a graduation mortarboard on our collective heads.
