Skinsaw Murders - mood music

Rise of the Runelords

Tonight's the night, my players should enter the Misgivings. Because this part of the adventure is so creepy, for the first time I'm going to break out of the mold and really set up the room to reflect that. I'm lowering all the lights except the ones over the table. I'm not planning on using a battlemat because I want them to really visualize the surroundings.

I'm also planning to use some dark ambient music playing in the background. I found that the Duskwood ambient theme from World of Warcraft works great, six minutes long and works great as a loop. Unfortunately, I found that you can't download that from the WoW site anymore. However, I found a great website where you can download all kinds of dark ambient music for free: Darkwinter.com. Check out the audio section, there's a ton of good stuff there.

Anyone else have good links to free music that they've used in their games?

Wes and I keep talking about building an iTunes playlist for Rise of the Runelords, like we did for Savage Tide. It wouldn't be free music (unless you already own the music in question, of course), but it's a handy way to do campaign soundtracks.

Would folks be interested in an iTunes playlist for Runelords?

I don't even own an mp3 player let alone an iPod and I think its a good idea! Count 1 for interested.

One more of those rhethorical questions? ;-)

I have made good use of the Playlists you did for Dragon Magazine, even though I don't use iTunes. Thus it would be a great addition to all the superb work you've done so far.

Definitely interested, would be nice to see your opinions on music matching this adventure path too.

I think the soundtrack from 28 Days Later would be a good place to start. I'm playing a lot of that while my group goes through Ravenloft. It sets a good mood for horror gaming.

Yes! :D

Might I suggest "Steeds of Thunder" or "Night of the Wolf", both by Nox Arcana?

I'd be very interested.

Ever since we've started playing Pathfinder, it's actually been difficult to remember the mood music. It's so far been potent enough without it.

We have dug out our Halloween sounds and miscellaneous music thingee and have been playing that periodically throughout the day. It's creepy, and I enjoy how the woman screeming sounds like she's enjoying it. It's got pseudo-Bela Lagosi, etc. voice actors/ actresses.

Thanks for the Nox Arcana suggestion; their samples are great (and downloadable, too) and I'll be ordering at least one of their CD's tonight. The "28 Days Later" sounds interesting, I'll have to look at that one.

I would be interested in an iTunes list, even tho I'm not an iPodling.

I knew folks here would come through with suggestions. I love the Paizo community :)

Thanks again, and keep the music ideas coming!

I personally think that your mixes in Dragon were one of the most useful articles I've read -- I've been using quite a few of those tracks in my own campaign.

So, yes!

Dark Archive

I thought that your Dragon article on iTunes was very good, and to this day I regret not really having an opportunity to use it, though it did inspire me to find SOMETHING in the way of ambiance music for my games (I use parts of the Half Life 2 soundtrack for battle music, ect).

I would love a playlist for Pathfinder. I'm nearly done with burnt offerings, and could use a good mood-setter for the Skinsaw Murders in the next few weeks.

Most definitely. Printing (or posting on the blog) the artist, album and title for each track would be very helpful for those of use without iPods or iTunes.

For atmosphere, there's some really good stuff on the Constantine soundtrack. I really like the soundtrack from The Fog (the recent remake) - Graeme Revell is one of my favorite composers these days. Because the Harry Potter movies have had a few different composers for the films, there's a good variety of material there.

King Kong has some great sweeping theme type stuff. Lemony Snickett is good if you want something offbeat and mildly unsettling. The soundtrack to Riven is my absolute favorite, as an overall album, and Myst III is pretty good. The Aeon Flux soundtrack has some good tracks, though the overall sound is more contemporary.

For combat, besides the others, The 13th Warrior is decent, and The Mummy soundtrack has some fun stuff (especially good for Egyptian-themed adventures). I use a little bit from Sin City, too.

Did you ever build a play list? I sure would be interested in this. I plan on running Burnt Offerings in a couple of weeks.

I'd suggest anything by Midnight Syndicate or Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, neither of which you can get on iTunes, but both are available via Amazon.

Or just good ol' Bauhaus, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (10 minutes) on a loop.

Samhain, successor to the Misfits and precursor to Danzig, also has some great stuff with screaming laid over guitars.

Liberty's Edge

I already have a bunch of music to play. I just thought it would be cool to see what Paizo would suggest as a play list.

I'm a Huge fans of using music in RPGs (I'd rather have a playlist than boxed text in some cases), so we will get to this eventually. It's just a matter of finding the time to root through James's scary big iTunes collection of movie soundtracks and my collection of video game soundtracks and then seeing what's on iTunes. It takes a while, but I'd like to get to the point where you can count on every Adventure Path having a good sized sidebar discussing soundtrack ideas and a shared playlist on iTunes.

Wes, didn't you do a Goodman DCC that came with a Midnight Syndicate CD?

Contributor

Hmm, I could let you know the music I had on when I wrote some of it James, if it'll help:)

Dark Archive

Richard, it would be really cool if you'd post your playlist.

I'd be interested in all kinds of playlists or music-suggestions.
The list for Savage Tide were really cool and I found many good tunes for our game since then.
Before that list we always played with the OSTs of 'Conan, The Barbarian' and '13th Warrior'. These are cool too, but enough is enough...:)
We've been using the Conan-OST for nearly twenty years now...:)

Check out Danny Elfmans music, especially his Nightbreed soundtrack. The title track on this really sums up the goblins and its got some really atmospheric pieces on there that would suit the misgivings as well.

I did! It was one of those things you do for love, not money. Midnight Syndicate came out with this fantastic CD called Gates of Delirium several years back with some really creepy haunted asylum themes. Upon hearing it a really creepy plot pretty much wrote itself in my head and I scribbled a bunch of them down (this was in 2000 I think). Several years latter, I'd known and worked with Joe Goodman for a while and when I suggested doing an adventure based off and including the CD he said that he'd been thinking of doing something similar for a long time. That turned into Cage of Delirium , which was super fun to work on, got an Erol Otus cover, was nominated for an ENnie, and every time someone picks it up off the Paizo store I scribble my name on the inside. So yeah, good stuff! I still love using that CD.

Liberty's Edge

We were playing music from the Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines PC game (which is in MP3 format in your install directory if you have it) last night, we also have a couple of Midnight Syndicate CDs and a 'scary classical music' CD that has Alfred Hitchcock (forgot the name of the actual classical piece) Tocatta, etc.

Hope you got to listen to our RUnelords book 1 soundtrack!

The Exchange

I downloaded some Hungarian and Romanian Gypsy music that I put together into a playlist, but I am about to get into the Meat of the Hook Mountain Massacre, so the Deliverance soundtrack is getting a download for use during that particular chapter. :)

If anyone is interested in following the Gypsy theme, here are the ones I downloaded and recommend:

Zoltan and his Gypsy Ensemble - "Gypsy Music from Hungary and Romania" (especially check out the single track "Two Guitars", I always start the evening with that one and then randomize the rest)

Ferenc Santa and his Gypsy Band - "Csardas : Hungarian Gypsy Music"

Andras Farcas and Ensemble - "Best of Hungarian Gypsy Tunes"

It's been 3 years, 10 months, 28 days, 6 hours, and 54 minutes (from the time I started writing this) that Mr. Jacobs offered to post a play list. Has there been any news or postings elsewhere that I'm not aware of?

I asked him about it several weeks ago in the ask James thread. The big-T apparently underestimated how difficult producing an AP compared to a dungeon article would be. here's most of the exchange here.

And if Plotty Fingers is still around, seeing as you missed me here... We'd all love to see your RotR playlists! Hop on into this thread and share?

Here's my playlist that I played on a loop...

Main theme to "Halloween"
Main theme to "Alien"
Mamiffer: "Mare Decendrii" (entire album, in order)
Psycho: Suite for Strings
Dronolan's Tower: "Journeys Into Darkness, Vol. 1" (entire album)
Worm Ourobous: self-titled album (entire album)
Mike Oldfield: "Tubular Bells Part 1" (a.k.a. "Theme to 'The Exorcist')
Esben and the Witch: "Marching Song" and "Warpath" from the album "Violet Cries"
Wolves in the Throne Room: "Woodland Cathedral" from the album "Celestial Lineage"
Nine Inch Nails: several individual tracks from "Ghosts I-IV": tracks 01, 02, 05, 06, 09, 11, 12, 17, 25, 30, 34, & 36

This gets pretty creepy.

[Note to US players: All of the above are available on Spotify, with the exception of the Worm Ourobous album. If I have time, I'll publish the playlist on Spotify and link it here.]

Enjoy!
