Rejected Submission IP question

RPG Superstar™ 2008 General Discussion

According to the rules:

"All entries in the RPG Superstar contest will become the sole property of Paizo Publishing. If published, reasonable effort will be made to credit the original author."

If an entry gets rejected, can the person who submitted recuperate the rights to the entry? Can it be posted, after the Top 32 are announced, in a Blog? This, of course, provided adequate rules about the OGL are followed.

Your IP becomes their IP if you submit (the whole sole property thing). So posting it on a blog afterwards is not a right you possess.

But they might let you buy the IP back (evil grin)

If you want to do something with your idea after submitting it to Paizo, you have two options:

1.) Let the nice people at Paizo know that you wanted to use the idea for something else, and ask their permission to do so. They may not be able to accommodate you, but they may not mind.

2.) The basic idea isn't copyrighted, just the specific expression of the idea. For example, if you submitted the Orb of Caprinus, a magical sphere that allowed the possessor to talk to goats, that doesn't stop others from developing other magical spheres or devices for talking to goats. You can develop different items that fulfil similar roles. As an example, the Necklace of the Satyr might not resemble the Orb of Caprinus, but they both allow the wielder to speak with goats...

If Paizo didn't have copyright to these items, they could set themselves up for tremendous heartburn in the future. Authors could conceivably assert the right to keep the items from being released on Paizo's website, in a PDF file, or claim copyright infringement if similar items become part of a Paizo publication. Paizo would then be obliged to get permission from each of the authors if they decided to use the ideas in any way.

Many of the RPGA's Living Greyhawk scenarios could not be successfully reprinted because of problems with copyright. They did not claim all copyrights for all the scenarios, so some scenarios were developed with ideas (characters, place descriptions, and plotlines) from other adventures the RPGA did not own. In copyright law, these are known as "derivative works". Because of that, many well-done adventures cannot be reused, since the RPGA can't readily get permission from the authors of other related adventures. They're not going to individually negotiate rights with dozens or hundreds of people, it's just not practical.

Dude! I don't know where you live or if you have space at your table, but I'd certainly game with you. I so want an item that lets me talk to goats! They'd be like, "Wha!? Why's this dude talking to us? Is that a juicy plant over there? Yum!"

I thought as much. Thanks for the answers.

If the reject button is pressed, I will talk to the powers that be to see what can be done...

Heck I'd offer to add a 'Designed by 'me', Copyright 2007 Paizo Publishing, Used with Permission' in the blog's post. I already did it with another company...

I had no idea that communication with goats had such potential. I may have squandered my opportunity in the competition...

I'm just one silly man.

Wait, you supposed to need a magic item to talk to goats?
*looks around warily*

Nothing to see here, move along.

If one can talk to goats, then one can control goats. And control of goats is control of goat's milk, and control of goat's milk is control of feta cheese, and control of feat cheese is control of Greek food! And with control of Greek food you can take over the world! For no man can say no to a Gyro.

Unless that man (or woman) is a vegetarian.

Liberty's Edge

I'm partial to souvlaki actually. And bougatsa. (Sorry, just random, I know.)

I'm not really worried about whether they use my rejected idea or not - in fact I'd be flattered. And they do say they'll try to credit the original author.
That's good enough for me.

You want to rule vegetarians? How is your army going to maintain a steady protein source?!

Most people overdose protein. It just slowly and irritably passes right through.
