1.) Let the nice people at Paizo know that you wanted to use the idea for something else, and ask their permission to do so. They may not be able to accommodate you, but they may not mind.

2.) The basic idea isn't copyrighted, just the specific expression of the idea. For example, if you submitted the Orb of Caprinus, a magical sphere that allowed the possessor to talk to goats, that doesn't stop others from developing other magical spheres or devices for talking to goats. You can develop different items that fulfil similar roles. As an example, the Necklace of the Satyr might not resemble the Orb of Caprinus, but they both allow the wielder to speak with goats...

If Paizo didn't have copyright to these items, they could set themselves up for tremendous heartburn in the future. Authors could conceivably assert the right to keep the items from being released on Paizo's website, in a PDF file, or claim copyright infringement if similar items become part of a Paizo publication. Paizo would then be obliged to get permission from each of the authors if they decided to use the ideas in any way.

Many of the RPGA's Living Greyhawk scenarios could not be successfully reprinted because of problems with copyright. They did not claim all copyrights for all the scenarios, so some scenarios were developed with ideas (characters, place descriptions, and plotlines) from other adventures the RPGA did not own. In copyright law, these are known as "derivative works". Because of that, many well-done adventures cannot be reused, since the RPGA can't readily get permission from the authors of other related adventures. They're not going to individually negotiate rights with dozens or hundreds of people, it's just not practical.
If you want to do something with your idea after submitting it to Paizo, you have two options:
