Hey all, sorry i'm late, i DO have a character concept, (2 actually)
Basically thinking a "Master of Magic" guy (I played that concept once before, as a doddled old mage who had lost his memory-it was Rags, actually, most fun ive ever had) So I'm contemplating Sor/Wiz Multi classing to Cleric/Favored soul, then going Theurge prestige class. I'll never have access to the highest lvl spells, but Ill have more spells than I'll know what to do with!
My other concept is a caster specializing in conjurations, 'cuz I have no problems with sending others in to do the dirty work for me!

Any ideas or thoughts? I love trying out new things/combos.

I'll post later today or tonite with the definitive decision.
/spoiler
BTW, ho DO i get the spoiler thing to work? ive tried it, but can't get it. /spoiler

:P

Spoiler:
ok, is THIS how it works?!?

Ah, gotit.

And the OOC too,...swell.

Well, I'm going with the Druid/Sorc split (probably taking my first Sorcerer level around lvl 3-4) and later go with the Arcane Hierophant (SUCH a badass PrC - for those that don't know, it combines Druid spells and Arcane spellcasting along with a few other tricks), together we'll have so many spells the mobs will be fleeing us in total fear!

Alternatively, you could go Wizard/Sorcerer and go in for the Ultimate Magus PrC (Complete Mage), as it would gel prefectly with that 'master of magic' thing. That will get you more magic than you can shake a stick at!

I'll defer to JSL, but I'd like to point out the prerequisites for Agile Shield Fighter: Proficiency with shields, Improved Shield Bash, and Shield Specialization.

I think that this is an exceptionally poorly written feat, but I think that it is written for the fighter who has spent a number feat slots on shield-based feats and wants the benefits that come with two weapon fighting. The only real advantage of this feat is that it doesn't restrict the fighter to using a light shield to get a comparable reduction in the penalties associated with two weapon fighting. A ranger with the two-weapon fighting feat and using a light shield would already get the benefits of this feat without all the prereqs.

On an alternate note, I'd need to take Martial Weapon Proficiency (Earth Breaker) if I wanted to use one of those cool Shoanti hammers, yes? Not that I think I will, considering one would cost me around 50% of my starting gold, But I thought I'd ask for later...

Correct! Cool character, BTW.

There is also an Alternate Class Feature in Dungeonscape called Trap Expert Basically you lose Track and Swift Tracking as class abilities/bonus feats. But you pick up the Trapfinding Ability like a rogue, and gain disable device as a class skill.

That'll make it three characters in the party who have trapfinding! I like your character concept of a martial Ranger given that we've got two spellcaster types already, but the ability to track foes might also prove valuable to the party. Just a thought.

Talion09 wrote:

Another Question for JSL:

How exactly do the feats Two Weapon Fighting & Agile Shield Fighter (From PHB II) interact?

...

My assumption is that they do, but I just wanted to be sure of my reading before I build the character. (A longsword + heavy shield wielding Ranger who likes to bash people with his shield rather than wield an offhand weapon)

This is why I gave up on DDM. It is nothing but this kind of rules ambiguity. Boo on the designers. I'm inclined to think the word "replaces" means that the whole two-weapon fighting penalty is flat out replaced.

There is a series of articles on the WotC website by Skip Williams about two-weapon fighting. They don't exactly address your question, but here is what they say:

Base penalties for two-handed fighting are -6/-10 for a heavy shield in your off hand or -4/-8 for a light shield in your off hand. Two-Weapon Fighting reduces the penalties to -4/-4 or -2/-2 respectively. Agile Shield Fighter reduces the penalties to -2/-2 regardless of which shield you use.

So if your intent is to bash with a light shield, there is no need to take ASF, but if you want to bash with a heavy shield, ASF gives you a benefit.

That said, it seems that a fair thing would be to allow you to take Agile Shield Fighter instead of Two-Weapon Fighting as a bonus feat at 2nd level. As usual, you would not have to meet the prerequisites (so you could choose whether to pick up the prerequisite feats). Additional weapon style bonus feats would increase your number of off-hand attacks as normal.

Compared to a "normal" ranger, you would have better defense (I assume you would start with Improved Shield Bash), similar attack bonuses to a guy with a long sword and a short sword, but less flexibility in terms of picking up a different weapon. That is, you couldn't trade out the shield for another sword and be as effective.

Does this seem reasonable? I like the character concept, so I don't want to discourage it...

As to the other options you mentioned, bonus feats instead of spells is fine. We already have two trapfinders, so that option may be redundant; however, it is also fine if you want it.

Unless I take the track feat, which I was thinking of doing anyway.

I may as well get SOME use out of Survival other than food and shelter...

Oh, and why are you liking my character? Not that I don't think I deserve it, I was just wondering if you had a specific reason. I love feedback.

Question: Flaws.

Taking two flaws was mentioned. Is this mandatory? Or is this 'up to 2 max'?

Just wanted to check.

I've always thought that the limited choices that Rangers have with their weapon styles at 2nd level has been a real flaw of the class. I like your solution for swapping out the feats available a 2nd level. I did this with a Ranger who wanted to use a crossbow rather than a bow (swapping rapid reload for manyshot, if I remember correctly), and it seemed to work well; DM was happy, player was happy, etc.

I like characters that have a hook, and playing a druid with a tribal saying is definitely a hook. One other character, I think FabesMinis' knight (?), had listed some of his character's quotes. I think that kind of thing makes it easier to grasp what the character is all about.

Flaws aren't mandatory (they're an option in Unearthed Arcana), but if you choose to take them, there's usually a two-flaw max. For each flaw you take, you get an extra feat.

The tribal saying does rock. And the quotes are indeed a kind of shorthand for what the character is like. Also, I like to now create too much backstory beforehand. Just a little and then maybe make stuff up as the adventures progress.

woo-hoo!
Progress at last!
After consultation with my class-constructing guru, it is decided. I shall start off as a "standard" wiz, with plans for taking a lvl of Sorcerer about lvl 5, then jumping into the ultimate mage PrC.

I plan on making the most of spells/feats from the spell compendium, and the Completes. Please let me know if this is a problem, and I will adjust.

Personality, don't peek if you like surprises,...

Spoiler:

Personality: i'm still deciding between a happy-go-lucky troubleshooter, about halfway between Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Who., Or a grumpy, gloomy, sky-is-always-cloudy P.I. type, a cross between Harry Dresden & Garret P.I.

I am running back & forth at work today, should be able to post stats, ect in the new profile by tonite or in the morning. Question, I know we are going to post our stats on the site here, but how do you want our character sheet sent to you? (I'm assuming email)I can save to PDF, but where can I download a word/pdf sheet to fill out? Sorry, I have a week-old PC, still don't have ALL my stuff transfered, or i would be using DMGenie to build the character!

Rags - everything in your post is fine w/ me. If possible, could you email the spell descriptions to me for everything not in the SRD. Also, you should probably send them to Santinj@ so he can steal spells from you :)

All - if you have fancy character sheets to email me, please do so. my address is legruej AT yahoo DOT com. I prefer PDFs, if possible. also, I'm experimenting with ways of distributing maps for the encounters. With two sneak attackers and two potential blasters, positioning will be relevant.

My first thought is to distribute maps via photobucket like this:

Blank Map.

Is that acceptable?

Also, it seems that everyone has at least started on their characters so The sooner you can get your background/reason for being in Sandpoint/how and when you got there stuff done, the better. In fact, that is probably more important to me at this point than your stats... I'm going to start doing intro stuff over the weekend and try to start posting it on Monday.

I think I'll start a new thread with the actual game and let this one die. I'll also start a discussion thread in that forum at the same time for ooc and metagame stuff. Please continue to use this thread until then.

If everyone isn't ready Monday, that is OK, it will just give those who are a chance to buy a loaf of bread or yak at a barmaid - nothing important will happen until everyone is ready to go.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

Ehlissa has come to Sandport, having set out on a somewhat half-baked idea of righting wrongs - an idea just as nebulous in its execution as it was in the planning. Maybe in this relatively young town, she can find like-minded souls who also seek adventure (and as gramps said of his sword-fighting days, a little bit of romance doesn't go amiss!) And the festival sounds like jolly good fun too!

Monday should be fine.

Male Human Unfortunately, I appear to be an Expert, not anything cool :-(

Hey guys,

Sorry to be brief, but I'm at work. I'll post up the character closer to midnight once I get home and have access to my books.

I'm still looking at a Ranger with the Champion of the Wild alternate class feature (And maybe the Agile Shield Fighter bonus feat we discussed, although I might want it at 1st, and just take 2-Weapon Fighting or PointBlank Shot at 2nd, as neither one is a bad feat to have. *Unless we have other options for combat styles for a Ranger? I think there were some in Dragon within the last 2 years, so I might go check later)

Basically I'll be sneaky and have good spot/listen. I'll run around bashing things with my shield and longsword.

Story in short:
Raised on a farm somewhere in the hinterland between Sandpoint and Magnimar, probably at least a day away from Sandpoint.

Descended from a military family that left Chelax after the death of Aroden and rise of the diabolical aristocracy.

Trained in combat by family members, because well, it is a pretty rough wilderness out there.

In Sandpoint for the festival.

---

Assorted Notes:
1. I'm good with photobucket
2. If anyone needs to reach me outside the game, talion09 AT hotmail
3. Would it be too metagame-like to take Goblinoids as my favored enemy? It does fit the background, as they are a nuisance/threat to all the farms and Sandpoint.

Here is my background/concept, hidden for those who like surprizes.

Spoiler:

Whichever personality I choose, "My Character", (name forthcoming) will be a young, up & coming Wizard from Chelax with a penchant for picking up new spells very easily, (almost like magic- wink, wink), and a talent for finding and solving mysteries/problems. (Taking 10 & 20 and making much of his skill rolls, such as they are.)
He is an orphan, and does not know who his parents were, (Feel free to insert relationship to a future enemy here, I love that stuff, ah la-"Luke, I am your father!") Fortunately he was "adopted" by a (fortunately) kindly older mage who sensed his mystical potential and nurtured it, if not his social skills.
He was encouraged by his adopted parent/tutor (who was beginning to go nuts dealing with him) to travel and learn all he could about magic on his own, then return in a year or 2 to relate what he had learned. In truth His tutor was at a loss as to how to teach him. His understanding of magic was as instinctive as a Sorcerer, but he was obviously studying and memorizing cantrips as a wizard.
His travels brought him to study the arts of the Varisia, where (after proving himself to a tribe in a mystic contest) he picked up a mystical tattoo. He was close to Sandpoint, and running low on funds, AND he heard about the festival, and in an un-characteristic display, decided he had earned a few days "off", and decided to kick back and enjoy himself. By the time we get started, he will have been there at least a couple of days, if not a week, making many spot & gather info rolls, and endearing himself to (or making enemies of) the local populous.
Whichever personality I run with, he will NOT be shy, but happily (or grumpily) butting his nose into everybody's business, and making compliments or criticisms of everything he sees.
AND, compliments or criticism, he has an annoying habit of being right,... (If not always polite).

That is the basics of who I am and how I ended up in Sandpoint. Let me know what else you need, or want expanded on, and I will post it on my character sheet once i get it done.

Oh, and the map works great for me, better than my napkin-sketches! ;P

EDIT- Oh, what are your rules on familiars? May I start the game with one? or do I need to wait until I have the 100gold in game to summon him/her/it?

Talion09 wrote:

It is definitely in character, so that is okay with me.

Since this is purely metagame stuff, I'll share it with the group -- you'll see the in-game implications soon enough.

Goblin: small fey.

When my wife started playing D&D she was really confused by the goblins as small militant humanoids. Shouldn't they be jumping out of people's closets and stuff, chasing dogs, and generally being a nuisance NOT serving as the cannon fodder in the Hobgoblin armies?

Well, Paizo's goblins seem to fit her interpretation alot better than the SRD "goblins as runty hobgoblins". And since there are no hobgoblin armies in RotRL (and, since WotC just did Red Hand of Doom, I'm hoping there won't be), I've decided to run with it.

So take Favored Enemy: Fey; and there's no such thing as hobgoblins or bugbears. If we need a naughty humanoid race to beat up on, they will be orcs - there are definitey orcs somewhere to the east.

Ragadolf wrote:

Go ahead and start with a familiar. That goes for Animal companions, too, if applicable. Others can buy animals per the standard table of costs. I've seen alot of pet dogs and a few donkeys in other PbP groups. For simplicity in the PbP format, I think all animals should act in their master's turns.

Does this mean there are NOT any Bugbears/hobgoblins as such in our game? Or that they are counted as fey as well (basically bigger versions of goblins I'm assuming)

Vesh's reason for being in Sandpoint is as follows:

"...Eluding capture (or worse), Vesh payed the hefty price of 20 gold pieces to be smuggled out of Riddleport on the first trading vessel he could find. Not knowing where it was destined when he boarded, Vesh had no way of knowing he would end up in the little, but earnest, backwater called Sandpoint..."

There's a little more on Vesh's profile, but that's it in a nutshell. He had to get the heck out of Dodge (or Riddleport at least). If it's all the same to JSL, I'd like to play it from the moment that Vesh steps onto the dock, having just been told by the captain of the vessel that his 20 gold pieces got Vesh "as far as here. Sandpoint."

Or, something like that. Is that cool? I figure, the less Vesh knows of where he's at, the more his insecurities will surface. So while he may be more scowly/snidey at first, he'll also have more of an intrinsic motivation to find companions.

On another note, I might be off-line until Monday. So, JSL, if you put up two new forums, can you put a link on this forum so I can easily find them? Thanks!

Male Human Ranger 1

Here is Corran, our Ranger. I'll clean up the profile and add in some more minor information sometime this weekend, but everything major is done.

Question: I ended up taking Agile Shield Fighter at 1st with a normal feat. (I liked the idea of bashing people in the same round as I swung the sword, and I didn't want to wait until 2nd level.)

Would it be possible to take an alternative Combat Style other than the standard 2 Weapon or Archery in the PHB?

Dragon 326 had several different Ranger Combat Styles in the Class Acts. The one I'm thinking about specifically was called Strong-Arm Style and would give me Power Attack at 2nd level, and then Improved Sunder at 6th, Great Cleave at 11th.

Male Human Unfortunately, I appear to be an Expert, not anything cool :-(

How did you want to handle rolls? Invisible Castle? Honor System?

The combat style is fine. It is probably best to use invisible castle for rolls, though there is (hopefully) little incentive to cheat. We'll try that and see how it works. Honestly, if I have to make a roll at work, I'd rather use invisible castle than whip out my dice.

I'm OK with either way, But I have no idea what this invisible castle is, or how to use it. And I'm sure It's probably easy, but I'll need basics on inserting links if we use it too.
