AoD: “Meanwhile, back at the village…”

'People coming,' Kajetan thinks to himself as a chill of terror moves up his spine. He looks South toward the people approaching, then at the body of the man he has just slain, then at the forest. He then makes his move.

If Kajetan feels that he has time, he will drag the body into the forest and hide there. If there is no time to move the body, he will just hide. When the approaching party comes, Kajetan will try to discern who they are and why they are there.

Hide Check (Roll 20-2=18), Spot Check (Roll 18+1=19), Listen Check (Roll 17+1=18), If Applicable, Sense Motive Check (Roll 14+1=15)

Where were those rolls all game?

Kajetan has been standing as if in a fog since killing the black clad soldier, but now, with others approaching, he is galvanised into action. Judging that he still has a few moments before the people approaching round the bend in the path, and having already gathered up his crossbow, he hastily grabs the dead man’s legs and drags him off the path, before concealing himself in an area of deep shadow between too gnarled tree trunks.

Not a moment too soon; scant seconds after the mage secrets himself into the hiding spot, the leader of the approaching men rounds the bend. Watching closely, Kajetan sees the scar-faced man from the village, a long, curved bow held in one hand, and a large bird of prey resting on his other wrist. Closely following him are five black clad mercenaries. The men walk carefully but quickly, intent on their northern destination. From the way that a few of them check weapons and tighten buckles on leather armour and scabbards as they walk, Kajetan gets the sense that they are preparing for battle.

There is a tense moment as Kajetan suddenly notices the soldier’s discarded short sword lying amongst the autumn leaves on the path, but in the dark none of the passing men seem to notice it, and fortunately none of them tread on it.

After several seconds the men have passed, but Kajetan can still hear and see them hurrying along the path to the north.

That’s more like it with the rolls!

Mothman, Great Writing!

Kajetan crouches in the dark behind the tree for several moments, his mind empty of ideas. Once the voices recede North, he realizes that his trespass and the man’s death went unnoticed. He breaths a large sigh of relief and feels a drop of sweat fall from his brow and onto his nose. Wiping the droplet away, he slowly slinks back on to the path and grabs the sword that almost gave him away. Moving back to his hiding spot, the scholar takes his crossbow and loads it. Then he uses the man’s clothing to clean off his Morningstar before he puts that away. Although he finds the task distasteful, the situation he is now in overshadows the task, and he is able to complete it without feeling noxious.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Now in the dark with blood on his hands and no way of turning back, Kajetan weighs his options. Should he travel North and hope to encounter the Bard and his companions before they are ambushed or should he wait here and hope that the Bard and his companions will succeed in defeating the dark men and return via this path.

They need to defeat those men or all is lost,’ Kajetan thinks to himself. Concluding that he might be more of a distraction than an asset since the companions have no idea who he is, Kajetan decides to wait. Moving North into the dark forest is not something he would excel at. The scholar is counting on his faith in the companions’ ability to overcome the ambush and follow this path. Then Kajetan will warn them of the coming dangers.

I hope this is what you were looking for Kajetan to do. My plan is to have Kajetan wait in the dark. When he hears an approach from the North, he will cast Ghost Sound on the other side of the path. In a deep voice, he will have the spell ask, “Who goes there?” Or something to that effect.

DM Mothman

Spoiler:
While waiting in the dark forest, Kajetan uses the few slivers of moonbeam projected through the trees to search the man. He is looking for anything of value and anything that might give away this man's identity or affiliation.

Kajetan will Take 20 and Search the man.

Kajetan:

Spoiler:

Utak, it’s really up to you, I would not like to dictate what your character should do. By taking out one of the guys who would have otherwise been pitted against them, you have already provided assistance in their coming battle – although that’s not to say that they could not still benefit from more help.

From a metagame point of view, you might be waiting a little while if you wait, as they are just getting involved in a combat which may take two weeks or so of real time to resolve. But it’s really up to you. Nothing to say you can’t wait for a while then change your mind…

DM Mothman

Spoiler:
Thanks Mothman. I was just looking for some direction to make sure that it was alright to follow the trail North. I did not want to mess with the storyline or the timeline in the other thread, causing you extra work.

After sitting in the dark for several minuets, a chill starts to set in making Kajetan anxious. He starts to rethink his options. ‘I might be of some assistance. If I can get to them before they are ambushed, maybe I could warn them. If not, maybe I could just make a lot of noise, making them aware that they are not alone. I probably do not even need to try to make a lot of noise. Well, I can’t just sit here. If I can help, then I will.’

Now determined, Kajetan moves back on the path, and as quietly as possible, moves Northward with his loaded crossbow in hand. He keeps his eyes and ears alert for any enemies and also any allies.

Move Silently Check (Roll 15-2=13), Spot Check (Roll 8+1=9), Listen Check (Roll 7+1=8)

If needed, Kajetan will find a rock and cast Light to help him find his way.

Once the soldiers have passed, Kajetan quietly searches the body of the man he killed, trying to avoid looking at the dead man’s face, or inhaling the stench of blood and death.

The man’s weapons and armour are well made, but not exceptional. His dark clothing is fashioned like a uniform, but bears no markings or insignia. He wears a plain copper ring on one finger, and a wooden star around his neck, as do many in these lands who wish to profess their faith. Pinned inside the lapel of his shirt is a small silver medal, fashioned in the shape of a morningstar, it’s head a stylised Star of Arton.

Soon enough, Kajetan continues on his way, trailing a distance behind the armed men. The forest is dark, but this close to it’s edge there is just enough light for him to find his way without stumbling. He continues up the path to the north…

Kajetan:

Spoiler:
After stumbling up the dark path for some five minutes, the night is rent by the hiss of arrows and the clash of blades from somewhere not far ahead to the north.

We’ll move you to the main game thread soon… Oh, roll for init as well please.

Sorry for my absence. My Mother is in the hospital.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
The cold blanket of darkness seems to envelop Kajetan causing doubt and despair as he travels North through the lonely forest. Logically, he knows that he has only been walking for a few minutes, but he is also aware of how the dark-stillness of the forest can play with the psyche of a solitary, scared individual. Then, all of a sudden, he was alone no more. With the sounds of battle erupting not far away, Kajetan crouches down and moves to the nearest tree, crossbow in front of him and the taste of magic on his tongue. 'Dammit, it happened before I could warn them,' he thinks to himself cursing his slow pace. Then raising his jaw he thinks, 'Well, at least I am here now to help.'

Moving from tree to tree, the scholar, slowly turning warrior, advances North.

Initiative (Roll 3+1=4), Spot Check (Roll 10+1=11), Move Silently Check (Roll 1-2=-1), Hide Check (Roll 13-2+11)

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:

Here is an idea of presenting Kajetan into the original thread. If Kajetan is able, meaning he did not enter initiative yet, while attempting to stay hidden on the side of the path he would like to cast Ghost Sound just to attempt to confuse the mercenaries.

Kajetan, realizing that his movements will surely be noticed, decides to attempt a trick he used so many times back in the libraries in Lorin. Setting down his crossbow momentarily he retrieves a bit of wool from his pouch. Performing particular hand gestures and mouthing the words of an ancient tongue generates the spark of talent that, to this day, still confuses the scholar. He uses this ability to project a shouting voice of a man, he is recalling from memory and only heard once, in the middle of the path. Stop this! This is Inquisitor Vorn. Arton has shown me the light, and Oldsun and his companions are not our enemy. Sheathe your swords, unstring your bows, and withdraw from combat.

Kajetan hopes that this will cause the mercenaries to pause, even if it is just momentarily.

Bluff Check (Roll 18+3=21)

Utak, sorry to hear about your mother, I hope she’s ok.

Spoiler:
Nice plan! I’ll try to tie things together soon.

Utak, sorry to hear about your mother, I hope she’s ok.

Thanks. Yes, she came home earlier today so I should be back to my normal posting schedule. I hate hospitals!

Kajetan:

Spoiler:
From up ahead to the north, the sounds of battle fade and you hear a voice call out: "We mean you no harm, and ask that you grant us safe passage. We are innocent travellers in need of rest. Please show yourselves... perhaps we can share a fire and a meal? We have a babe with us that is in need of rest and care, as well... please... our intentions are peaceful..."

A moment later there is an answering shout, seemingly a little closer to you:
“Come out to where I can see you, and throw your weapons down. Then we can talk – resolve this thing without further deaths.”

This happens just as Kajetan is laying down his weapon and preparing to cast his ghost sound spell – you can still go ahead with this action now if you wish, or take another action.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Kajetan's spell is on the tip of his tongue when he hears the bard's attempt at parlay. 'Well, he is much better at this than I. Without using tricks, also. I'll wait and see if this works first. Might as well not give my position away if battle has stopped. It may not be necessary,' Kajetan thinks to himself. The scholar then crouches down and waits as the scenario develops.

Kajetan will delay any actions hoping that the parlay will work instead. At the first sign of renewed combat though, Kajetan will act with his plan.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:

Hope it is ok to be following along in the other thread. Not sure how much of the conversation Kajetan is catching. I am assuming that Kajetan is able to hear the conversation between Keildrithe and Atrek.

Kajetan tilts his head and peaks around the tree he hides behind to better determine what is happening.

Listen Check (Roll 7+1=8), Spot Check (Roll 3+1=4)

Kajetan:

Spoiler:
Heh, I was just about to post the following: If you’re following the main thread, you can hear all of the loudly spoken conversation between Keildrithe and Atrek. You may act at any time, or continue listening as you prefer.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:

Kajetan is getting a bad feeling about this. He knows that these men were sent to take the Bard and his companions out of the equation. He has little hope that this parlay will work out good for the Bard.

’But what if it does work without any more loss of life? If the parlay works, I can still attempt to make contact with the Bard before they make it back to Barg, And if it does go bad, then I can try my ruse.’ he thinks to himself.

Listening to the mercenaries words, Kajetan attempts to remove all hope so he feels the need to act immediately and not wait teetering on the edge of action any longer.

Sense Motive Check (Roll 4+1=5)

Spoiler:
Kajetan checks his boots and makes sure they are durable enough to withstand the load of crap the Bard just spouted out. :)

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Mothman, If Kajetan decides to move with his plan to cast Ghost Sound, did you want to post that under your alias to add suspense to the game and add confusion to the main thread or should I just post it? Just a thought that it might be fun to add more questions and create interesting role-playing opportunities when Kajetan is introduced. Just let me know.

Spoiler:
That's a good idea! Let me know when/if you want to do it, and I'll do that.

Spoiler:
Kajetan feels the tension mount. He is ready for his plan. He believes that the moment is upon him, but he waits until something happens.

Spoiler:
Kajetan is feeling stiffness settle into his knees from crouching so long. His heart races and the anxiety he feels from this situation is way beyond the fear he ever experienced when stealing (borrowing for a long period of time without telling anyone) library books.

Just felt the need to post. Not trying to rush anything.

Utak:

Spoiler:
Kajetan, from his hiding spot amongst the trees near the path, about fifty feet back from the clearing, can quite clearly see at least one of the soldiers hiding nearby, a bow trained on the unfolding scene within the clearing. He can also see Atrek talking to Oldsun outside the cottage. He sees Atrek take a step forward, one hand behind his back – and that hand is wrapped around the hilt of a dagger. He feels that perhaps now – if ever – is the time to act.

See the main game thread – and roll for initiative!

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Initiative (Roll 16+1=17)

Would you like me to post my actions here or enter the main thread?

Utak:

Spoiler:
I think post your first action here, then probably switch to the main thread. For the next round. You’re essentially first, so go ahead.
From your vantage point, you can spot one soldier hiding nearby – about 30 feet from you – who inadvertently loosed his readied arrow when “Vorn’s” voice shouted out from behind him. He is looking around wildly but doesn’t seem to have spotted you yet. There are likely others hiding out here, but you can’t see them. The edge of the clearing is 50 feet away down the trail.

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:
Kajetan thinks about sending a message to the Bard, letting him know that he has another ally in the forest. Feeling the importance and immediacy of the situation though, he realizes that the Bard will be able to figure this out on his own and action should be taken. The scholar, feeling the anxiety of already taking a life, does not look fondly on his next move, but he knows that these are bad men and diplomacy was already attempted. Kajetan takes his light crossbow and fires at the bowman that is in his view.

Light Crossbow Attack (Roll 6+2=8), The damage that could have been (Roll 5+0=5)

The crossbow bolt buries itself harmlessly into a tree trunk not far from the archer. He looks around in confusion, seemingly unaware where the arrow might have come from. A hide check please.

Hide Check (Roll 15-2=13)

After seeing his bolt go wide, Kajetan ducks back behind the tree hoping that he was not seen or heard. Cursing silently to himself while reloading his crossbow he thinks, 'I am not cut out for this. There has to be some tricks I can learn to take out these bad guys.'

DM Mothman:

Spoiler:

Not sure, but I think you need my Round 2 action

After reloading his crossbow, Kajetan turns back to the bowman. Taking a deep breath, the scholar concentrates on his target and lets the bolt fly.

Light Crossbow Attack (Roll 16+2=18), Damage (Roll 7+0=7)

Should my next post continue in the main thread?

Spoiler:

The man searches in the dark, but is unable to locate the source of the bolt. He begins moving up the trail, looking around – until a moment later when Kajetan’s second bolt hits him heavily in the chest, knocking him to the ground with a gurgled grunt.

Yes, I’ll shift us over to the main thread now I think.
