Anything that speeds up and simplifies the mechanics of game play and cuts down on DM prep time is welcome, in my book (within reasonable limits, of course -- I don't want the game so watered down that it becomes OD&D). I would especially like to see high level stat blocks reduced to a more manageable level (there's nothing I hate more than multi-page stat blocks), and to see more logical "feat trees" (like in Iron Heroes). Sounds like they're going to revise magic in such a way that casters won't be useless once they run out of spells, and won't need to have to rest for 8 hours after every third encounter in order to maintain their usefulness, which should be a good thing (depending on how the idea is executed).

There's alot more I could think of, but those are the most important and necessary changes, from my point of view...

I totally agree with you there. Revamping demons and devils had me on edge. The snippets about the coming Realms retcon really ticked me off. There is no reason to do this other than to force new campaign setting books down our throats to stay "current" with the metaplot. I might take a look at the new Realms in August, but I'm betting I won't like what I see.

I know a lot of people have concerns regarding the 'Digital Initiative' of 4E, that it will take people away from the game table.

But for me this is one of the most attractive prospects, the virtual table anyway.

Many of the friends I used to game with have moved away as work, marriage and other 'mundane' aspects of life have required.

I'm still in touch with them via phone and email, but we see each other so infrequently that gaming is just not an option.

However, we all get free time and coordinating a session of D&D via the internet would not be impossible.

If I can game with good friends in distant places as a result of 4E it will more than compensate for the cost of buying new rules.

And I will continue to run my existing 3.5 campaign with other friends.

Which is one reason why everyone should switch to Mac...

It.
Just.
Works.

unless it doesnt. Or Apple decides to add an ipod patch that just happens to fry your ipod right after its warranty runs out, or a patch that makes your usb keyboard and mouse not work, even if they are made by apple.

noones perfect, and apple keeps pumping out new editions what every two years? dont get me wrong I love my mac, it sits next to my pc.

sorry for the hijack

I have another Problem with 4th Edition. The Game could be good, but i think i will not buy it. Other games have brought on new editions. Shadowrun for example has been upgraded every 4-5 years, but only 20 of the SR books are rulebooks, which i can no longer use if a new edition comes out. 80% of the books wotc published were rulebooks, which i can burn if i play 4th ed. Furthermore wotc tell me in their 4th ed teaser that all edition of D&D were crap and comming next May we will all be saved by this glorious new game. On the same webpage they tell me to buy the Rules Compendium which is essential to play D&D.

i would like to see combat less complicated
I am lamenting all the books i have bought over the last year being made useless. What is this about retcon and metaplot? I hadnt heard anything about it yet (though i admit when i heard the rumblings about 4.0 i assumed it was just net BS hype hysteria and ignored it) So they are making a metaplot? I mean more so than there was? didnt they learn anything from whitewolf?
Of course from a marketing/money standpoint, metaplot is good business, at least in that it will force everyone to buy everything to keep up. I personally prefer the toolbox approach that most everyone (WOTC included) had been taking. I am always going to make my own world up as I go along. Sure I use an occasional published adventure, like some of the dungoen ones, but still i mold them into what I already have going. Granted Pathfinder is making me consider going with it as is and starting a new campaign.

They wanted to economically build their own fantasy character rather than follow what seemed to be a limiting template.

Class abilities don't always match up with my character concept either. Why would my con-artist rogue have backstab? I do not want a berserker barbarian. And why, for the love of all that is holy, does a bard need spells? (other than to balance out the character class against the other poorly thought out straight jackets)

That would be why you can install the latest software written for OS X Tiger on a System 7 Mac and still have it work just fine.

Oh wait, you can't.

Well, why you would want to install 2007 software on a computer running an OS built in 1991 is strange by itself--16 years is a long time to wait to upgrade... Nonetheless, I bet your 1991 Mac is still running 7.x just fine, with no crashes, and no reinstalls!
