Greyhawk in Jeopardy

3.5/d20/OGL

With the end of the Paizo control of paper copies of Dungeon and Dragon Magazines and the coming of 4th edition, does this mean WotC will finally manage to hammer the final nail in the coffin of all Greyhawk material that is not Living Greyhawk.

Not everyone that loves Greyhawk takes part in the Living Campaign.

Fans will keep it alive as they have before in times like this. The only "support" WotC ever gave GH was jacking the deities for the PHB. The best "official" support for GH has come from these fine folks at Paizo. There are a number of passionate 'Hawkers that are constantly cranking out Greyhawk lore and adding details to the places not touched on. The setting will live on with the fans.

My unfounded, uninformed, completely baseless speculation is that WotC will release GH as its first non-core supplement. Said supplement will have rules for any of the "core" provisions changed by 4e. So, if, for example, the Great Wheel is left on the chopping room floor and 4e only has the elemental planes of Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry, the Greyhawk book will have the details on the Great Wheel.

While that would appease (maybe?) a lot of the old-school Greyhawk Fans, what about the fanbase for Eberron and Forgotten Realms, which are currently supported by WotC?

I can see WotC releasing a GreyHawk Campaign Setting for 4th Edition, but not before either one of those two.

Eberron is the newest setting, and leaving aside any arguments as to its relative worth (I like Eberron, but I know its a contentious subject), wouldn't releasing a GH sourcebook before the Eberron one be like admitting they made a mistake? And wouldn't it be a slap in the face to the Eberron fans that have to wait for 3 years (!) for their 4.0 sourcebook to come out? (Alright, angering fans is what WotC seems to do these days, but that is counter to my argument ;-)

And I can't see them making Forgotten Realms wait until year 2 or 3 of 4.0 to put out the FR sourcebook, because they are apparently hyping up FR for the Living FR campaign, etc. Plus FR has really, really vocal fans on the WotC boards. (But again, angering fans would be par for the course, wouldn't it?)

*Of course, what I just said above is taking into consideration the announcement that they would only put out one 4.0 Campaign Setting per year. If WotC wants us all to convert to 4.0, what better way to do it than to put out the Campaign Settings?

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my post. I agree and would be surprised if GH came out before FR or Eberron. I was thinking that GH would be the first of their alternate campaign settings to be released. I interpret the announcement you site to indicate that, in addition to FR and Eberron (the supported campaign settings), WotC will release an updated older campaign setting. I don't think that they will only release FR in 08 and then only release Eberron in 09 and then release GH in 10. I think they will release FR and Eberron in 08 and, soon thereafter, release GH.

But, like I said, that's all speculation on my part. I think it would be the smart move on their part, particularly if they do make deep changes to the core setting.

(Of course, the fact that it is the smart move is probably evidence that they will not do it given their record of fan appeasement.)

Liberty's Edge

My hope is that WotC will hire the Paizo guys (Bulmahn, Jacobs and Mona) to write the Greyhawk campaign setting handbook for 4e. (Fingers-crossed)

It seems like a logical extension of the Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk that those 3 authored.

True, and if any of them wrote it, I'd buy it. (I have a list of authors/designers, and if they do pretty much anything D20, I'll pick it up.)

But wouldn't it be counter-productive for Paizo to take 3 of their "big guns" off the GameMastery/Pathfinder line to work on what is essentially a competing product in another Campaign Setting, even though it is Greyhawk?

Similiarly, I doubt that the Paizo guys have time to do more "generic" books like Complete Scoundrel or Dungeonscape (although both rock!) when they could be now be putting out similiar OGL material.

No Rocky Road? Or would that be a paraelemental plane?

It's been in jeopardy since Gary Gygax lost TSR. But, like Daigle said, it will survive the same way it always has.

Bingo. It's the border plane between Chocolate and Vanilla.

Bah. You lie about having a working replicat of Optimus Prime once and the lawyers are all over you. I can't even say things like "Shut your pie hole and buy some more pokemon cards - I need silk toilet paper for my yacht" anymore.

Rough times indeed. ;)

Doom, doom, doom, doom, doom, doom, doom!!!

It's obvious from some of the posts I've read that you guys move much faster in your campaigns than I do. Personally I recently checked my supply of Greyhawk 3.5 material and found that I have close to 3-4 YEARS before I get my guys through what I currently have (thanks Paizo!! I love you for it!).

If 4.0 turns out to be a better reinvention of the wheel then I'll start to sweat, but in the meantime I've got to wrap up my current campaign and get started on Shackled City (yes I"m THAT far behind!).
