4th Edition

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

They had a small presentation on Gleemax, the Digital Initiative, and 4th Edition.

There was some interesting stuff for online strategy gaming going on. I didn't hear anything new about 4th Edition, but I heard a few neat things about software of the DI. The virtual play table will apparently not enforce rules although it might not if something is broken. The example given was when a player moves (for a player with 30 feet base speed) it will show line segment with the first 30 ft being green and anything after that would be red, but if the DM says the character can move 35 feet then the program wont stop them. They said the computer would not be taking the place of the DM for determining what the players can or cannot to.

I was more concerned however about the ability to add user created weapon models to the character builder and have the 3-d character use them. They said they were discussing it and that it wouldn't be available for a while. It did disappoint me a little, but I'm hopeful that it will come out sooner than I expect.

I hope the decrease in GM prep time is not overshadowed by a time consuming model creation period though. I would hate to be able to prep for adventurers twice as fast only to spend 4 hours trying to texture 3D models for variety.
