Cyphermages etc.?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Is there more info on the Cyphermage anywhere other than the little blurb in the Pathfinder Player's Guide? I would like to learn more about them.

Hmmm, I must be alone here.

Well, I guess that since my questions aren't worthy of a reply, I'll not ask any more. Maybe I'll dump my subscription too, who knows?

Whoa there champ, calm down. You do know that it is Sunday, and I believe technically that the staff has weekends off (if you count writing all the gaming material us customers love, having a day off).

I am sure a Paizo person will see this question soon enough and give you an answer, but you just posted it yesterday, give it a little time, huh?

I would have to re-read the section on cyphermages. Can you point it out to me, and I will take a look and give you my thoughts on it; but again I am just a customer, which you may not be looking for.

Either way, I would rather help you out or advise patience to you than see you bail on a product like Pathfinder. So just wait patiently and I am sure all will be revealed -- in the time in between, what is it that you like about the cyphermages, and what page are they mentioned on?

What Last Rogue said. Either the Cyphermage is a PrC in an OGC book, or it's a special one Paizo is making for Pathfinder Chronicles.

From what I can make out, it's only a title at this time for mages of a certain vocation. The small description is currently the only time it's mentioned in the Players Guide or the Adventure Path. They might detail it more later though I guess.

But as it stands I would assume that mages that are studying the ancient ruins near and around Riddleport are called, Cyphermages.

That essentially means for now tigger1tom they are there for you, or your DM, to fiddle with as you wish. I envision them as mages you deal with messages, languages, and ancient codes . . .

At this point, all we've said about cyphermages is that little blurb in the Player's Guide. We DO have some plans for them, but probably won't have a chance to reveal much for several months or more. Basically, they're wizards who specialize in decoding strange languages, riddles, and runes; their magic has a strong rune element as a result. What exactly this all means is still nebulous. They might become base classes, prestige classes, a guild, or who knows what?

As with all of the stuff we're doing, of course, if there's a huge outcry of interest, chances are good we'll get to them sooner than later, in any event.

And as for how fast questions get answered on these boards... please be patient. We DO check the boards relatively often (more so than our productivity wants, to be honest), so if a question doesn't get addressed soon, drop a polite bump and we'll get to it eventually. We DO have to leave some time to work on these products, after all (which is what I'm up to right now). And then squeeze in personal time where we can.

It is so cool to see you pop in here at 8:30pm on a Sunday. Concern for your customers what a concept. Bravo to you and all the staff at Paizo.

I'll throw my support for more detail on the cyphermages and some of the other unique vocations mentioned in the Player's Guide. I'd love to see some PrCs, feats, etc. that make use of those concepts. On the same note, I REALLY REALLY REALLY would like to see some more background feats or Varisian equipment in upcoming issues. Anything to help flesh out the cultures for PCs new to the setting.

I like the balance of flavor vs. mechanical value of the background feats in the Player's Guide and I'm hoping for other options that could become available to players as the campaign progresses. Maybe fighting style feats, or a line of "Priest of XX" feats (like the option mentioned in another post that would give a cleric an additional benefit for taking Martial WP with their deities favored weapon).

Another cool option would be something like the History Feats from Neverwinter Nights 2 (although with a mechanical benefit attached) -- something PCs only gain access to after some experience tied to the AP.

Can I call you with a question about your work on the weekend?

Talk about an overdeveloped sense of entitlement. What's next? Will you be asking that James seal each envelope with a kiss and a little note to you? Maybe he could personally deliver your copy and wait while you read it in case any question come up.

Was searching for more info on cyphermages and came across this. I've got a player who is looking for options on this class, so it's good to know it may eventually be fleshed out.

An option might be the Geometer PrC from Complete Arcane. It's focused on geometry of glyphs and wards. The art makes me think 'cyphermage' but it might not be quite right. It's a good start, though.

I'm interested in where the fine folks at Paizo will eventually take this Cyphermage concept. They were mentioned briefly in Second Darkness, and I've been waiting on the edge of my seat for some more hints and clues, or even for a new Prestige Class or some other definitive information on them. Unfortunately, the Cyphermages still appear to be as much a cipher as the name suggests.

I'd appreciate it if some Paizo staffer would let me/us know whether there are any ideas about the direction the company plans to take with Cyphermages (if any). In particular, I'm looking at the possibility of playing one in the near-ish future, and would like to know what to expect of an official Paizo take on the concept in preparation for that.

We don't have any big plans for Cyphermages in this year. Beyond that though... yes. Eventually there'll be more stuff out there about Cyphermages. For now, the Second Darkness Player's Guide is the best bet for Cyphermage infos.

Just a cry of support for more about the cyphermages -- I was really hoping they were going to be in the APG in some form or another... however with several "lore type" PrC's already I would settle for some feats and processes, possibly a guild -- something to use basically for them.

Cyphermages are very much Golarion-flavored, and since we're trying to keep the hardcover rulebooks world neutral... the APG isn't a good place for a Cyphermage. That said, there'll be PLENTY of good stuff in the APG for folks to build a Cyphermage-type character!
