Weapon and feat combination and observations

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Is it just me or does the klar look an awful lot like the tortise blades from Dark Sun? Also a combination came to me that has the potential of being truly interesting. Since it looks like the klar is both a weapon and a shield combined a character could take Improved Shield Bash and be able to attack with blade while retaining the AC bonus of the shield. Now add in Two Weapon Fighting to the mix and you have great defensive and offensive capability. A second or third level ranger could wear a mail shirt, weild two klars and be as well protected as a fighter wearing heavier armor.

Keep in mind, of course, that shield bonuses don't stack. So if you wield 2 klars, you don't get twice the AC benefit.

A klar's blade is more akin to a shield spike as well... if you shield bash with it, you can't use the blade at the same time. You have to pick one or the other.

Why do you think I advised taking the feat Imporved Shield Bash? The feat allows you to hit someone with the shield and retain the AC bonus of said shield.

I think his point was that it would be silly to wield two klars, when you could wield, say, a long sword and a klar (since the shield bonuses don't stack, you may as well go for higher damage). Or a bastard sword if you had the EWP feat.

Of course, with either of those, you'd need the Improved Shield and TWF feats.

Hmm, add shield specialization or adopt a house rule adapted from Dark Sun which allowed for piecemeal armor. I am thinking concept here, part of my thinking is the image would be rather cool. And what's more important the game mechanics or how fun the character is to play?

Green Ronin has a book called Plot and Poison which has a fighting style based around what your talking about. There's a feat in there that lets you retain shield bonuses while bashing people with your shield, and there's another feat which lets you benefit from two shields. I keep wanting to make a character based around this, but my group doesn't realy play anymore, and you need so many feats you pretty much have to play a fighter (something I can't bring myself to do as I like skill points too much).
